Grass area showing 0 sqft for label with %area% variable?

I have a grass region and want to display the area of it. It shows up in Chief but when I put %area% under the label it says 0? Is there a trick to get this to work?

I tested this and it appears If you build the terrain, it will report correctly.

 

Also, I notice your signature needs updating to x15.

x14 didn't have the grass region tool.
