Opening In Lowered Ceiling In Stair Hall

I used the lowered ceiling option, for areas where I need the ceilings lower than the floor to floor height. At the stair from the basement up to the main level, how do I get the ceiling to frame around the stair (in stead of showing the air space). I drew a invisible wall around the stairs but that didn't work. Do I need to use a soffit?

Have you tried using the auto stairwell tool?  It will create the hole in your floor above the stairs.  You can then edit the hole location if needed.
