You guys, I'm dying here.  I'm doing a full renovation of a split level, but can't wrap my head around how to affect part of a lower wall while not doing it to the upper and vice versa.  For example, I need the wall below the upper to be solid and then railing at the upper, but Chief sees it as one wall and puts the railing all the way down.  I'm attaching the glasshouse of the space (just solid wall now) and a photo of what I want to do.  Any help will be super appreciated!!!

Use a pony wall.  Open the dbx for the wall in question and click on pony wall and pick your two wall types.

I freakin' love you guys.  I was actually thinking pony walls was the way to go, but didn't think I could turn one half into a railing.  Thanks a million!

Okay... slight problem.  So I make the lower wall a pony wall and specify the height, but rather than lift the rail higher than the level, it puts concrete above it... yes, above it.  Showing the dbx and the lower and middle levels.  Any ideas?

Post the plan.

I'd redraw as there seems to be walls that are incorrect, but then, I'm not sure.

Sample plan attached. No need for a pony wall if I understand where the railing goes.

Thanks, Eric.  I'll try to get it going.  I'm very grateful for your time in helping!

Okay, Eric (or anyone).  First off, a million thanks.  I started from scratch and copy/pasted the walls to a new plan so I could redefine what I wanted.  Everything works now... sort of.  There are some Bizarre things happening, and I've exhausted my resources in figuring them out.  14 years using Chief and I'd think I could figure anything out, but this is just nutso.  I'm posting the .zip again (new file this time) and specific camera views that explain what's going on.  I hope someone has the answers.  Thanks in advance.

Don't know how to fix the brick showing on the inside without using a patch.

Changed the wall definition to remove the drywall, then used a solid to replace it.

This change is not in the uploaded file.

The solid patch in the ceiling over the railing is needed (instead of using a ceiling plane) because a ceiling plane snaps to the main layer in the wall above leaving 1/2" uncovered.

I think I understood your fix with the ceiling planes.  Kind of disguising it, right?  If so, I did a similar thing with the brick wall showing through and created a 1/4" thick poyline in elevation view to cover that whole wall section.  You are an amazing dude to help me, Eric.  Do you just monitor these boards to see what you can help with?  I'd like to help people as well, as I know a ton of tricks myself.  Do you get alerts or something?  Thanks again!

Happy to help. I'm normally in the field building, but have been stuck at home with a broken foot for months, so for now, not much else to do.

Well, the community is benefiting from your demise.  Best of health to you, sir.  I hope to pay back the community with my experience as well... minus the broken foot :P

      Hi everyone:

I am having an issue with a split level. I am using Chief X11.
The plan i posted does not have foundations since when i add those things get really weird and I think I need to sort out the issue with the levels first or the foundation will never build right. I have a room that is going to be garage however no matter how i define it the door from that room into the main house is above the level of the ceiling. see attached photo. I have also attached the plan. The exterior walls are a sip wall customized according to the manufactures specifications with a layer for the furred interior walls. The total thickness on those walls is 10 5/8" The interior wall is a customized interior wall that is load bearing for use in certain areas of the design.

OK so I have wrestled with this house for waaaaaayyy too long.  Still, the room over the room is fighting me.  I think I am getting close.

This is an as-built design, with a new flat roof over a storage space in the garage to give the client stand up space in the storage room.

The house is complex and I have not even begun to work on the basement which has two floors.  One of the floors contains a built-in swimming pool.  That should be fun.  There is a basement level under the garage as well.

The storage room over the garage has a crawl space on the right side of the room when viewed from the front of the house.  I have included a couple of screenshots so that you can get an idea of where I am trying to go with this.

There are a few other problems that I am having with walls not stopping at intersections on interior surfaces and exterior surfaces as well.

Wow I seem to get all the jobs that are really difficult to do in CA.

Maybe it is just me, and I don't have a grasp of how to do unusual things yet.  I don't know.

In any case can someone please tell me how to do this floor area?  The room is a split level from other floor areas in the house.  And the ceiling IN THE ROOM is split level.  Arrrgggg.  Sure would be nice if I could do a poly wall with half of it invisible.  Can that be done?  Any suggestions would be very welcome.

      Regards

I'm trying to work on an apartment that exists over two levels. They're not a whole floor apart but you go down some stairs to the back of the apartment so it sits about half a floor lower where the kitchen and bathroom are. Is it not possible to use this app for this?
