johnny
I dont see your attached file - however, 3ds should work. If you attach the file I can try on my system and see what happens.
jcaffee
I have never had a Max file work as Max textures are specific to that software.
johnny
You can setup a Max export so that it simplifies the textures to a point (its called "Baking") you can get a good export. The complexity of this process is determined largely on the model specifics. Chief is very basic when it comes to its ability to map textures. But, yes, you cannot simply export/import into Chief any .3ds file you want to include all the textures as they are in Max.
abrandner
The trick is to create a new material using your texture. If you bring in an .obj and then apply your material in chief it will work. Just make sure to have good UV's in max. Here is the link to creating a new material... https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00767/creating-a-new-material.html
