I thought you had a 9900 and good to know. Hope you get your problem solved.

Yeah, I can overclock the i9-7980XE to nearly 5GHz - but I typically run around 4.6.  Again, if I had to do it all over I probably would have just stuck to the i9 9900K for both systems since I dont think I get 3x the price/performance value.  The i9 9900K is a great chip.

The 2.6 GHz clock speed of the i9-7980XE chip is not " incredibly fast", it's actually quite slow for Chief which likes a fast clock speed versus more cores of which that chip has 18. Not saying that's your problem but it would be way down the list of chips I would choose for Chief.

A Quadro card will probably not help as Graham suggests above and you already have (2) 2080 ti's?

I thought you also had a i9 9900K system? If so try it on that and see what's different.

If you want you can send me the plan and we can compare my current AMD 3900x to your CPU to see what we can see. Happy to help.

The i9-7980XE is overclocked - like most should be.  I also have the i9 9900K (home office system) and its overclocked and a great chip, but the i9-7980XE outclasses it without question.

Is it worth $1,500 more for the i9-7980XE - that I would say no....but anything CPU intensive and the i9-7980XE stands out.  I'm sure the X299 architecture plays a part in that too.

  3. So i know Chief folks said get gaming graphics cards, but I am assuming that is primary for "standard" views and perhaps PBR?  Anyways, i notice when a Chief file is loaded up with all the framing and notes things get slow just in the 2D plan view panning around - and I have an incredibly fast system.

My question is, does anyone know if the Quadro cards would help with this aspect?

  4. I personally use Floor 0 too, but mainly since i really don't do an extra plan sheet beyond the basement/foundation plan.  I typically just show wall sections in the areas that have foundation below to describe the condition.  I can say i've had foundation subs ask for a "clean" foundation plan without the floor plan too - but we typically find a middle ground.

  5. If you want to run a dual graphics card system then you should consider Mac.  Win 10 and SLI is awful.  Some apps support SLI and some you literally have to turn it off or it shuts it off for you...and then you forget to turn it back on, and frankly I never fully trusted it was on even when it said it was.

I think a single 2080 Ti is the best bet if you want Nvidia.  If you really really want to use dual card system on Win 10 then I would actually recommend you use crossfire.  AMD seems to have a better handle on dual card support which is probably related to their development with Apple.

I've pulled my other 2080 Ti out of my system and am allowing an employee to use it, since the $ to performance ratio just wasn't present.

    Johnny,

Are you talking about the Plan or Layout?

What sort of slowness are you seeing?

    Is it Pan & Zoom?

Yes, its pan and zoom....also general edits.  It feels like working under water.  X11 just feels a bit worse than other releases.

  7. Chief seems to Choke more than I remember on finished plans.  I have a very fast system and id doesn't seem to improve things too much, which means that its an optimization thing with Chief.   Would the nvidia quadro help with the plans?

  8. If your clients are really looking for a reproduction of the Modern twist to Dutch Caribbean Colonial featured at Ally's Beach you should probably first spend a serious amount of time learning the programming side behind the execution- even above trying to mechanically make it work in Chief.  Take it for what its worth, but you cannot "apply" this style to a design to get the outcome comparable to the examples.

Is it possible that you have your material region covering a standard wall and an attic wall.  Still a problem if that's the case.  Sounds like something that might have to be sent in to TS.

Bingo - that was it.  I guess I didn't realize a material region acts differently on an attic wall.

Thank you everyone for looking at this situation... i should have just posted the plan.

  10. I'm going to try and give you advice from my perspective.  I would charge a customer A LOT more (even if I took the job in the first place) if they wanted to have a hand the in the design (or drawing process).  There is more work explaining the reasons for something to a DIY-er like yourself rather than working with someone that didn't want to take part in the drafting/design process.

Remove yourself from being the drafter to just being the owner and you might find better success....and perhaps pay less.

You had me curious, 50% savings would add a another reason for me to get a desktop over a laptop and be able to do so sooner than I plan.

So I tried two versions- both 9700k.

    A) Digital Storm base config at $1924 -few upgrades made it $2300; identical on Partspicker was $1902-savings $375 or 18%

    B) more upgrades- GPU, Optane ssd to replace the Samsung 970 Evo Pro, power supply, MOBO, cooling, DS $3800, PP $2900-savings $900 or 25%

Almost a grand on the high end system is attractive.

Aside from assembling it yourself, you give up (or do yourself) stress test, lifetime tech support, 3 years labor and 1 yr parts, OS installed, and the DS system has both processors overclocked and checked at NC on either version.

Looks like it's a balance between hourly rate and cost savings. Pretty sure I could do it but I doubt that I could: unpack, sort everything (does PP send along a diagram for novices), plan it out, assemble it, install the OS, overclock, and  check everything in a day. Likely those with experience could. Otherwise I guess if you just enjoy doing it, or want to learn. (or don't have enough regular work :)

I just built a 9900k system for my home office where my build was about $1700 and the closest thing I could come to that spec was $4k.  However, I shopped parts on discount etc and even purchased a brand new video card (unopened) via craigslist.  Your point about your own time being accounted for makes sense, but I find that knowing how to build and fix your own systems is superior to relying on others and having down-time.

When rare issue comes up, I can fix or replace a part quickly since I know the system so well...and all the parts have warranties.

I have a problem with sidelight windows in very thick walls. I think it is obvious from the screenshot. Windows (and doors) have this think "wall" between themselves and central door. When I mull the objects these walls stay.
Is there a way to remove them?I deleted casing but it wouldn't help.

I hate to be captain obvious, but its probably because there is no such thing as a single framed wall that thick.   Eric's idea is probably a practical solution, but you also might just try modeling the condition out the actual way it would be built - the software works much using it that way.

Surprising how much I dislike the larger line. We'll get used to it of course bit it makes the interface just little bit clunky looking IMO.

I hate it too....i was able to switch back by not using any of the custom UI options and going back to the true "classic" and then uncheck "color theme"...
