Retired contractor looking to purchase a earlier version of CA.  Used to have X5 which I purchased on e-bay where purchases are somewhat guaranteed with paypal..

Is there anyway of guaranteeing transfer once payment is made?

Keep in mind that 90% of the Chief Architect versions on eBay are illegal versions.  Yes, you seem to get a code to use but its not real from Chief.

Three off the top of my head.....

    Open below room,

Reference Display, (the normal way - or even referencing an external plan file)

View To Cad, Paste Hold Position

A bit depends on wether you want to show the stair on a floor above or a floor below.

Thanks for the input - is there a way to "open below room" for an exterior stairs?  Here is a quick snap-shot of what i am trying to get done.  Obviously i am still working on the particulars of the ADU design - but i'd like to show the stairs on the upper level.

  3. I personally think MSI laptops are the best due to thermal handling which becomes a major issue with Laptops.

My material list for lumber is only giving me counts for studs, plates, and headers. I have built framing for the whole house, how come there are no quantities for Floor Joists, T&G OSB, etc...?

    Thanks!

Someone is going to ask you to upload your model file here so they can look at it to see why you're having a problem with this.  If you do that people are more willing to jump in and help instead of guess at the issue.

Maybe you realize this already, but If you do get the molding polyline method to work, just know that whatever result you get will be very rudimentary, because it won't include wiring lengths in the Z direction.

I'm trying to figure out what you mean, since if I reshape the polyline on the Z axis and run a material report on the object it calculates for the me the total (including Z)...?  You got me curious about this, but CA seems to calc that on my end.

You might mean that it doesn't automatically take that into consideration, but if you actually model the Z runs using the break tool it does work (thought also a bit of extra work).

Added: I just realized as Chopsaw mentioned i was using a 3D molding line.

  6. Its not a coincidence that the forums are starting to be filled with performance issue subject matter in Chief.  Either Chief took a step backwards in performance or relative to other apps we use Chief feels very slow.

Hey Scott, how does the iMac compare to a regular windows based pc ?? Is it faster for rendering? Any problems?

I've played with this and it feels to me that Mac version of CA runs a bit better.  It's not super noticeable, but after spending some time in the app it just felt a bit snappier.

So you know, I was using the exact same processor in the PC as Mac (it was a hackintosh).  The graphics card in the PC was theoretically better even.

I did not find CA performed any better than how it performed on an iMac.

You might want to save the money.

Because Chief is poorly optimized for current hardware.  Its a real shame.

  9. You might be better off looking into Lumion or Twinmotion for these services.  I've seen Chief's VR and its no-where near what those other companies provide...and Twinmotion is free right now (though currently Lumion is higher quality).

I believe in Chief those cards would handle themselves fairly similarly. I've actually had good success with both Nvidia and AMD cards, and it may be just me but if I was doing an AMD processor built I would probably keep that theme throughout.

No. I have asked for more control over the shape of line ends, like exists in other programs:

In this example you can select a flat end with no cap, a round cap (the only option currently available in CA), or a square cap, as well as specify the shape of the corner.

Maybe time for a reminder suggestion.

    Fully agree!

    Johnny,

A couple of alternatives spring to mind.

    1. Create a new line style using text in the style - use Character Map to select a square character.

Thats an interesting idea... going to try.

This is my first plan and I need help finishing the construction drawings as well as someone who could give me a structural framing plan. We will have the foundation engineered as well as the truss and floor package. The home is being built in Douglas County, Castle Rock, CO. Originally, I was going to be working with the contractor to add structural components to the plan, however that isn't an option now.

    Thanks for the help!!!

For fun I generally looked at the drawing set, and this home is complicated enough I would recommend you finish your working drawings with an engineer or architect.  You're going to need to show how a lot of what you have designed actually gets constructed, and there are some code issues I can see with the design as its currently drawn.

I use moldings for things like this. X11 has various enhancements, but nothing that cannot be done in X10.

Of course the major drawback to this tool is dealing with openings.  Material regions do auto-cutouts.  This is exactly the kind of thing that drives me nuts about Chief.  Its brilliantly simple until you quickly find the gaps that require messy work-arounds.

Material regions should, in my opinion, go around a corner or at least have the option to.....or moldings should have the option to cut out openings in both vertical and horizontal areas.

While I agree there are places that the modeling tools could use improvement I don't think that is the problem with this instance. It's a question of what can be done in reality. Chief will not miter this with a 3D modling line when coming in at an angle because it can't be done IRL.

Yep, you are correct - I guess what I meant was to model this correct its a PITA in Chief trying to make either molding lines or solids work compared to most modern BIM apps that have straightforward modeling action to produce a predictable result.

I feel the folks at Chief are a bit too comfortable with the idea of work-arounds being considered "best practices".
