  1. Dan,

I think part of my problem is that I changed my email to gmail with the new forum. When I go to sign in after not being automatically logged in my old email appears in the log-in DBX. Your computer database need to be cleaned up.

    Ron Ravenscroft

    Ron,

Our system shows you are using your gmail address.

If you see the wrong email address displayed in the log in page, it's the result of your browser displaying the wrong information. When you tell a page to remember your log in on a web form it's stored on your local computer. It sounds like you need to clean up your computer's browser information:)

On some forms you may be prompted a list of items to enter, if you see the wrong email address you can typically mouse over it to get it highlighted and click delete to delete it from your browser history.

Depending on what browser the methods used to clear that information are different.

  2.

I WAS ON LINE LATE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AND FOUND THIS WHEN I LOGGED ON THIS MORNING. YES I'M YELLING. THIS IS A PITA AND CHIEF, AS USUAL IN NOT CONCERNED FOR US. I HOPE THIS DISTURBES OTHERS AS WELL.
Sorry, you don't have permission for that!

    [#10146]

You do not have permission to use the search system.

    Need Help?

    Ron,

It appears you are being logged out. (Yes, I'm stating the obvious;)

First, did you close your internet browser between yesterday and today?

Second, Can you tell me if you always use the same computer to see the forums or do you use a tablet and a PC.

Finally, did you watch videos, or download libraries between the time you were logged into the forum and the time you noticed the problem? If so, did you use the same device or a different device than the one you use to view the forums?

  3. Curt, I did some digging today with our web team and we made a couple of tweaks.

We hope the changes make a difference in your log in experience. Let us know if you see a difference in the behavior (if you can get logged in.) If you can't get logged in contact technical support and we can attempt to work through the problem. Let them know you were working with me on the issue. You should be able to use the Support Center as it is not using the new log in system.

  4. I probably was not as clear as I should have been.

What I was describing are the print scaling settings set in Drawing Sheet Setup (Page Setup in version 10)

The layout print settings should be 1:1 when you send to layout you choose the scale. Most plans in the US are 1/4" = 1ft but there are many choices.

Typically users set the plan print settings to 1/4" = 1ft so that you can either print from the plan or see the plan as it will be printed at that scale.

The real work is done when you send to layout at the scale you want.

When you print a 24 x 36 sheet to a 24 x 36 paper you don't want to scale it. You want it that size.

This is a common area of confusion - see this link:

    http://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/category/104/0/10/Chief-Architect/Layouts/

The dialogs in the knowledge base are different than version 10 but the process is the same.

  5. Layout should be set 1:1 (1" = 1")

When you send to layout set the scale and the drawing will be sent to that scale.

If you send a plan to layout at one scale then scale the layout you are scaling the item twice. There are lots of help articles online as well - Look up layout on the main web page.

  6. If you get a blue screen crash on Windows it's hardware.

Hardware crashes fall in two categories: Physical hardware failure and Drivers. You can't do much about a physical failure except replace the failing hardware. You can often update drivers.

Video drivers are quite often the source of crashes in chief. In most cases updated drivers or different driver versions will resolve issues where the hardware is relativley new. Really old hardware may not have updated drivers.

Ray tracing is going to run your system flat out as fast as it will go on all cores. It could be overheating, hitting bad ram, or something else. Make sure to blow the dust out of the heat sinks.

I have seen weak power supplies cause crashes as well. Usually low power behaves like unplugging your computer. It simply shuts off to protect the hardware.

Also look at sleep settings. Some systems crash when going to standby.. You probably don't want that to happen while in a ray trace.

  7.

... A few times, my whole pc crashed when this happened, and I had to reboot....

If the entire system crashes it's a strong indicator of a hardware problem.

If only the program crashes but other programs and the operating system continue to work it's likely a software problem.

Is it a crash (I got an error message, or the computer shut down, blue screened etc.) or is it a hang (The computer stopped responding to my input or got really slow)

If it hangs or becomes unresponsive during a ray trace this may just indicate the system is really busy. A faster computer or limiting the number of cores devoted to ray tracing can help.

If possible use the term 'hang' when the system is simply not repsonding.

Use the term 'crash' if the program throws an error or simply quits.

If you see a blue screen or the computer shuts down let us know as well.

Learning the correct terminology to describe the problem will help a lot in determining the solution.

Lastly, if you get an error take a screen shot or copy it down and post the message here or contact support.

  8. It still could be hardware.

For exampele, X5 didn't ask as much from the graphic drivers. We are attempting to get more out of the graphics with X6 and have seen some older video drivers fail. They work fine in X5 because we don't use some of the newer capabilities.

I'm not suggesting that your issue must be graphics just that it might be and it does make sense that X5 might work well and X6 does not. There may be something else at play as well but updating graphic drivers had helped others.

Still what you describe does not on the surface appear to be video related.

One note for clarity of others posting on this thread: crashes on MAC appear to have different root causes than on Windows so please let us know what OS you are using.

  9. There is an issue with certain layouts where you can get into a resize / refresh preview situation that hangs the preview. (I had a repro with 4 24 x 36 pages at one point. ) It has a lot to do with the size of the preview dialog.

What is happening is that it's going back and forth between needing a vertical or horizontal scrollbar. When the view refreshes for one it calculates that it should resize the preview, which causes the other scroll bar to be needed. It's really hard to reproduce except when you have a specific number of pages at a specific page size. It may also be related to screen resolution.

To work around the issue, choose a layout with a different number of pages, or add a page to your layout. Then you can do a couple of things,

    1) Turn off automatic preview and save, it will remember this. You can click the preview button to refresh the view anytime you want without issue.

    2) Set the layout preview to a much larger size and make sure you are remembering dialog size and position.

This particular issue is resolved in the upcoming update.

  10. Are you seeing a progress dialog? Undo / Redo should be faster than that. Progress dialogs should only pop after 3 seconds.

If this is what you are seeing you might want to check the performance of your hard drive - especially where the undo folder is set. (You can find that in preferences)

If you can put undo on a fast drive, like an ssd drive.

  11. Actually my problem is that I get multiple labels with the same door, some are the same number and some are not.... anyone have any experience with this with X6?  I have went through the entire plan file and deleted every schedule but it is still showing multiple door schedule markers

Typically you will find that there is another schedule somewhere that you missed. If you can't find it open a support ticket or post the plan. I'm certain someone can track down the problem. If it truely is a bug we should fix it.

  12. I posted in another thread about this, but, if you clear cookies when you close your browser you will need to sign in. If you use a different computer or different browser you will need to sign in.

Test closing your browser and re-opening, if you have to sign in it's in your browser settings.

  13. If you log out, or delete cookies when you exit, or use a different computer, or a different browser, you may need to log in again. You should be able to go a week at a time without having to log in so long as your system is setup correctly.

To test try closing your browser and re-open. If that causes you to have to log in then your browser settings are causing the problem.

  14. It should be as easy as File > Open Plan. Browse to where you saved the file and open it.

The older versions broke up each floor into separate files. Make sure all the files are in that same folder.

X6 should be able to open files all the way back to version 7 (maybe 6) I can't remember which. Version 7 is the version we recommend for opening earlier files.
