  1. Hey All- Got a question on roof trusses. In this plan I am trying to truss the roof above the main house. I have set one truss and taken a back clip section of it. It is not laying out how I want it to and I just don't know how to manipulate it to do what I want. It shows the bottom chord continuing on to meet the top chord at the fascia board. What I want is the bottom chord to stop at the bearing wall and the top chord to continue to the fascia board. This is what the "as-built" trusses look like for this project and it will make a difference for the addition's ridge height etc. I have included the plan as well as a picture of the trusses the way I want them to look. Thanks in advance!!!! Justin SIMPSON_TRUSS_QUESTION.zip
  2. Man do I have a lot to learn! Thanks Richard. Great fix! JC
  3. I also tried Drawzilla's option to have one of the screened deck walls with no definition and it worked like a charm! Thanks everyone! JC
  4. Thank you- Ok, well. the idea of unchecking the 'Hide Terrain Intersected By Building' certainly filled the missing piece in under the deck but......Now there is a full lawn growing in the basement. What now brown cow? J
  5. Hey All- Just had a quick question about this funny thing happening to my terrain area under my screened deck. It's not filling in like the rest of the area and I can't figure out what's making it happen. I believe it has to do with a setting in my floor above within the screened deck but I don't see where I can manipulate it to fill in. Hmmm. Got me stumped so let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks a bunch in advance! JC P.S. See attached plan file. JOHN TERRAIN.zip
  6. Hey everyone- I've been wondering how to add 1x4 p.t. (3/4"x3 1/2") @16" o.c. vertical furr strips as a layer to my exterior walls to provide a rain screen under my hardie board siding. I don't know exactly how to set up the layer with individual strips at 16" o.c.. When I set up the layer it gives me the option of material and thickness but only as a continuous sheathing, not 1x4 vertical strips. I'm sure someone has done this and I'm just missing the obvious answer. See photo for example... Thanks for your help in advance!!! J
  7. Very true brown tiger. After a few people's responses being the same as yours....I think it has to be in my video card / how the program is using my video card / or a setting within the program and or video card. I may need to take my unit to a computer pro and have them optimize it. Thanks again-
  8. Hey All- I need a few of you to test the plan / layout speed on your systems to compare with mine. My system is VERY laggy when I start working on pages 6-10 of my layout (sections / details). What if I actually wanted to use the auto detail??? I'd have dentures by the time the screen were to move to the right 4 inches. lol Also, in the plan I don't even attempt the painting / tech. illustration or glass house viewing options in 3d. Sure, it changes, but try to move the camera, yeah right! Glad I paid for my funeral expenses already. Standard or vector are the only things that run smoothly. Point is, I'm trying to see if it's just a system / video card / CA program setting or two that can be tweaked to increase the speed on my machine or is it a problem everyone is having. Either way, tthrow me some ideas on how to improve the performance after you have witnessed my plan / layout for yourself. I may just be bat crazy! I have read a number of chief talk threads about improving computer speed and have tried them with no real progress. I have included my plan / layout / system analysis and video card data. Background: My signature includes my system info too. My CA program only has 1 or two plans/layouts (because I'm a complete nube) so space is not an issue. My plan/layout are stored on my local ssd drive - not the cloud. I'm not running a bunch of programs behind CA. I may have firefox open with 1 tab and an open office document for taking notes at the most. My task manager shows the processor is off the charts when I'm working in the issue areas. I mean ping ping ping 100% resources with a side of jello! I switched all my sections and details to view with plot lines instead of live views or live views updated on demand. Still no difference either way. I have removed all auto detail from the sections / details, again still no difference. Let me know what ya think! Again, thanks in advance- J P.S. I have reserved time on IBM's Watson just in case this cannot be improved. I hope that has enough operation power...Geez! LATEST.layout LATEST.plan
  9. Very cool. Thanks a bunch! Onto the next bit of framing. Again, thank you- J
  10. Hey all! Hope everyone is having a great day. Got a "fitment" issue with my scotch valley rafter laying flat on the roof plane over my bedroom. I'm trying to create a base for my creeper (cripple) rafters to rest on. I created a solid polyline member on a flat planer level but can't get it to lay along the roof plane (angle) over the bedroom. As you can see, it's sitting in time out like a kid who didn't eat their veggies. I've included the plan along with an example of a scotch valley. Thanks a bunch guys/gals- Justin ROOF.plan
  11. Hey Everyone- This wall / pony wall is giving me a fit trying to display these windows in plan view. I'm trying to show windows without the wall fill going through them AND show the pony wall below. There doesn't seem to be a happy medium. Doah! Please view the attached screenshot with the issue laid out for ya. If there is a video or tutorial out there send me the link....Better yet, if you know the fix that would be excellent. Thanks- JC
  12. Thank you for all your suggestions. I am not trying to remove the doors. I'm trying to view the windows as well as the doors in this view. It's not a big deal, just something I noticed while learning. Thanks- JC
  13. I looked through the forums but couldn't find the answer so.... Windows go away in 3d views when I un-click the "Walls, normal" layer to view framing. Funny, because the doors are still there. Got any suggestions? See attached image.
  14. DSHALL- Great points! I agree with you that getting the templates, preferences, anno's, layers and defaults set are critical to a solid working foundation. Thank you for your guidance. If you have the time I would certainly take you up on your tutoring. Please let me know your availability and pricing. Thank you- JC My email is jecormier10@gmail.com for further our conversation.
  15. Hey Drawzilla- Thanks for the heads-up on the Chief one on one training. I am aware of that, but I was looking more for in-person training. Again, thanks for the help. JC
  16. Hey Everyone! Just wondering if there is another CA member that lives within an hour or two from Knoxville, (Even as far as Nashville,TN) that would be willing to help me along in the beginning? I'm willing to drive and pay for your time of course. I've got to get up to speed as fast as I can and I believe one-on-one's would be the best way for me to learn. Southern KY, Western NC (Asheville) or Northern GA (Atlanta even) are not out of the question either. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, JC
  17. Hey CA People....Thank you for being here! Such a great resource. Got a couple of quick questions about door heights. 1. In the Doors defaults dialogue box it gives you 3 choices, Absolute, From Floor and From Finished Floor. What is the common default designers would use to set their doors? Major difference between carpet and 3/4" hardwood. Do I need to change the height for each doorway each time I change floor coverings? Can't be! I find that if I do not set my doors to the "From Finished Floor" default I end up with the door sitting below that level of the finished floor (With Hardwood Flooring...See attached dwg). I assume I would use the "From Floor" option in a garage or deck area and the "Absolute"...Well, why even have it as an option? 2. The casing around both sides of both the exterior and interior doors wrap all the way around below the door threshold. How do I remove that bottom piece below the threshold and have the casing terminate at the floor? 3. Don't exterior doorways usually come with a metal threshold? How can I show this for materials etc, or is it even an option in CA? Again, thank you in advance! Sincerely, JC
  18. OK, fixed the layer issue. I was drawing my exterior walls on the "Walls, Main Layer Only" layer instead of the "walls, normal" layer. I still have clicked to frame wall in the framing defaults on each floor but it still doesn't show up in either plan or section view. Hmmm.
  19. What exactly do you mean? I have gone under all the layers and turned on all the framing layers except for the"Walls, Main Layer Only" layer. If I put that layer on, all the details of the walls such as sheetrock, osb and siding go away on the plan view and I am left with only the solid 2x6 wall. If I click on the "build framing" button and go through the directories I chose to build wall framing. When I "ok" and get out of the dialogue box and try to draw another wall I get another dialogue box that pops up asking if I want the "Walls, Main Layer Only" layer to be turned on. It's a cycle that goes round and round.
  20. Got it! Had to press the "Attach this file" Extra special super duper outside-the-box button.
  21. Thanks Northriver. I have all the framing layers on and they still don't show up. Don't know what else to say. I tried adding a screenshot too. Doesn't look like that worked either. Doah! Thanks again! J
  22. So many questions... I cannot view my wall framing members in plan or section views. I also cannot view my foundation re-bar in plan or section views. All I see is the wall type I set up with the color. What magic spell do I need to use? Also, I am a former Autocad 2D designer and a total noob at this 3D stuff and have been trying to go through the online learning videos but there doesn't seem to be very good overall teaching element that goes over the basic 1,2,3's of how one goes about understanding this product. Yes, I have been pounding the online video tutorials about setting up templates, wall layers etc. but I would like some process explanation and best practices advice from someone who has walked this path before me. Even the forums only help so much. I try to follow along and then I get stuck halfway through the process because whatever I'm doing isn't making the program do what needs to be done. It would be great if I could get together (skype, phone, whatever other means) with a seasoned CA member that could walk me through a handful of questions and show me the process they took to get through the enormous amount of information this program can provide. This stuff is sooo excellent, but I truly need some help in the beginning to get up to speed. Should have screenshot below...
  23. I am having a heck of a time getting started, can someone please help?
