  1. Wow, that would be awesome HamlinBC. If it is easier to take screenshots and post as pics, that would be okay. Thank you so much.
  2. Hi HamlinBC, and thanks so much. That looks beautiful. I just needed to know how to do it and couldn't find the right instructions in the knowledge base and the video from Chief didn't help me either. I am a complete newbie at this and I am not an architect. I'm learning everything as I go, so I expect I have probably made heaps of mistakes. Our idea is to build a house mostly out of ICF to save money on labour costs which are enormous down here in Australia. That is why the interior walls were ICF as well. Also the idea that it is cool in summer is very appealing as that would save on cooling costs. Where I live, summer can last for over 6 months and it gets bloody hot. Is it not okay to have ICF interior walls? I know they have to be aligned with the wall below because of their weight, but if it is better to have 2x4 I better adjust it I suppose. Just not looking forward to the extra cost of framing there. I didn't know about the pony walls for attics. I was just trying to achieve a half stone wall look, which is what I want in the end, and don't know how to achieve that in Chief unless they are pony walls. Is there another way to get this look? with ICF our plan was to render the outside walls with half stone and half stucco. We can get stone from the local quarry pretty cheap, so it will be a D.I.Y. process. If you wouldn't mind explaining to me how you "adjusted the pitches on the roof to be higher so that you can actually put a room-in-attic, and then raised everything about 1'", and got the two roofs to join so they don't have gaps and weird walls poking through, step by step - think "Roofs for Dummies", I would really appreciate it. Thanks again for the new plan. It looks fabulous and what I was trying to originally achieve. Cheers Coralie
  3. Sorry I'm so long getting back. Solver, I was just wondering if that will make the roof Cape Cod style or not as that is what I'm trying to achieve. Thanks.
  4. Here is another view in standard in case the other pic was too hard to see the walls sticking through.
  5. Okay this is where I'm up to now. I followed solver's advice and built a more simple structure. Just a rectangular cabin. I think the main confusion for me is that the video on youtube from CA and the article are different and use entirely different ways to generate this roof. I had no luck with the video at all. I followed them step by step to make a roof by - build new floor, generate from 1st floor, then build roof and check "ignore top floor". Only problem was that every time the roof would end up on the first floor with the 2nd floor sticking through. I then went through the article and I think what I was missing was making the 1st floor walls full gable as well. I thought it only had to be from the 2nd floor plan. So I went ahead and changed them. Then I built the roof - ignoring the top floor- and then went and changed the ceiling height to 24" in each room. Next, I rebuilt the roof, unchecked "ignore top floor". I then went and reset the ceiling heights to default by checking the box corresponding to finished ceiling height and Voila! I have the Cape Cod Roof. Now I just have a wee problem with the walls sticking through the roof, but not as much as before. I've attached a pic so the problem can be seen. Not sure how to fix this one, so if someone knows what I've done wrong, please tell me how to correct it. ACADuser, thanks for the tips, I will try that once I master the simple one first. Cheers all.
  6. Okay, I have probably gone about this the wrong way. I drew a second floor plan and then attempted to put the roof on. From what I can see in roof design - chief architect video, and the suggestions here, I should do it the other way around. I will try that and see how I go. Sorry that I don't understand everything you guys say at first. It takes me a while to go through everything and look up the meanings and definitions of what you are suggesting. I'm not an architect - just an amateur home builder - or hoping to be one if I can ever get a plan off the gorund. I'll keep plugging away until I get it right though. Will keep trying your suggestions. Just takes me a lot of time though. Cheers and thanks again.
  7. Thanks Guys. I'll have a go at each one and let you know how it turns out.
  8. Hi Guys, I'm trying to build a roof for this house. To me it looked like a simple design but it is obviously more complicated than my skill set. The roofs are in the right direction for the house in the pic, but I'm trying to make them both Cape Cod style with the roof joining the 1st floor walls. Does anyone know how to achieve this? I've tried checking "Ignore the 2nd floor" in the build roof dialogue, but no luck so far. Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers and thanks. Mtn Cabin.plan
  9. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. As it turned out my exterior walls had no thickness. I changed that on both the upper and lower levels and voila - gap gone. I didn't know about the auto rebuild foundations and I went through and checked each wall structure too. Seems to have solved the problem. Cheers and thanks for the help.
  10. Hi Alaskan_Son. I've had virtually no internet since Iast posted. My isp said there was a particular problem with my computer and I had to reinstall everything and also get a new modem. I'm back online now. Yay! Thanks for having a go at my plan. The front looks good, but I can still see a gap at the back though. I'm going to go through and try the suggestions one by one and see what happens. I've never had this problem before so I've done something wrong somewhere. I'll let you know how it goes. Cheers and thanks.
  11. Finally the plan uploaded. Whew. Beechmont.plan
  12. I can't attach the plan. My connection is playing up. Looks like I will have to try tomorrow. I'll give it one more try tonight, but if you don't see it, it didn't work.
  13. Hi Alaskan_Son, Here's my plan mate. Thanks for any advice you can give me. Cheers Coralie
  14. Hi all. I have a gap between my floors when I view my plan in Full overview. I don't know why. Never had this particular problem before. I followed the instructions in the support section, but it didn't work. http://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00038/resolving-a-gap-between-floors-in-camera-views.html Does anybody have any suggestions how to fix this? Thanks
  15. Thanks country and Alaskan_Son for the tips. I will check Houzz and probably use a proxy to get to the American site. The problem with Google and Houzz is that they often redirect me to Australian websites which is very annoying. But I will definitely search those various attributes and styles you mentioned Alaskan_Son. I had no idea there were so many categories. Down Under we basically just have Colonial but that means English Colonial period from the 1800's mostly and it has a whole different feel. More refined. So I will look up those styles and see what I can find. Cheers. Coralie.
  16. How does multiquote work? I hit all three of you but none showed up? Anyway, I was replying to jcaffee, KirkClemons and Gawdzira. Thanks Guys.
  17. Hi I'd love to download the rustic lodge stuff but I can't afford SSA. Thanks so much for the 3D warehouse pendant mate. That's great. I was just wondering if you knew of any American furniture manufacturers, because as Alaskan_Son said, it may look like ordinary furniture to you, but not to us. I can find heaps of Italian Furniture mfs, which supply 3D models, but don't know the names of any American ones. Cheers.
  18. Hi Alaskan_Son. Yes that is a good idea. What I find different are various embellishments such as studs, lonestars, crucifixes, long horns, antlers - stuff along cowboy lines. We don't have that down here. Wagon Wheel Lights or lights with antlers for example. Beds that have hig profile headboards with Western embellishments, Cupboards with crucifixes or stars and studs. The furniture is a little rustic but not antique. I know I can change the material of furniture, but the look is what I'm after. too. The shape of it is comfortable and unique to us. Hope the photos explain it more clearly. I suppose Cowboy chic?
  19. Hello! Does anyone know of any American furniture manufacturers who provide 3D models through their websites of their furniture? I am in Australia and am particularly interested in the Western Style that I've seen on sites such as pinterest. I'm just not familiar with American companies that produce furniture, and this style as far as I know is not available through any manufacturers in Australia. If anyone knows of any resources for this, I'd really appreciate it. Cheers.
  20. Hi all and thanks for all your help and suggestions. I must apologize for not posting earlier, but I've had a terrible time of things lately. My beautiful old cat, Cuppie, got really sick the week before last with kidney failure and we had to put him to sleep last Saturday before Mother's Day. Our hearts were just broken as we've had him for 17 and a half years. Then on top of this heart ache, I ended up getting a terrible cold and chest infection - no doubt from all the crying I did, and haven't even had a chance to look at my plans as I've been too miserable. Today, I started again and followed the advice posted here and put my basement on level 1. Then I fooled around with the terrain with various regions and I finally got it to work. Thanks for all the tips. I will keep referring to them in the future because they were really great and helped me heaps.
  21. Hi Glenn, I took a pic of the terrain in my basement. The outside terrain is right, but the basement is excavated, so no terrain should be inside. Not sure how to get rid of it. Thanks.
  22. Okay, after reading through all the advice and the great vids posted (many thanks for that), I thought I should go back to the drawing board and start the foundations on 0 and draw the basement there, which you can see on the right of my plan. Then I went to level 1 and started the main living area. There is no 2nd level to this one. I thought I should put a terrain in which is pretty tricky as both of these levels have a concrete slab - monolithic I think -, before I finished off the plan for level 1 as there is living space over the basement. Larry helped me out greatly before with how to build a terrain for this design, but now that I've started afresh, you can see my basement is now filled with terrain and I'm buggered if I can figure out a way to remove it. I have no idea if I've constructed this properly so far for a split level home, so if anyone knows a better way, I'm all ears. Can anyone help me get the terrain out of the basement please? I've put the link to my plan below. Cheers and thanks Coralie https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=C06FB433C5FEBEB7%21147
  23. Thanks Guys. I've attached my plan for you. What is puzzling is that this is the way I did it before and it worked. The only difference is that this time I am using Casual American template. Joe when I click the default ceiling height box, it makes the ceiling only 33 1/2 " high. So I've done something wrong in the setup. should I start again and make the walkout basement on level 1 and the ground floor on level 2? In Australia we call the first floor the ground floor, so that is why I started on level 1 for the main living area on ground level. Thanks for your help Guys. The Peak New.plan
  24. Hi, I'm trying to build a basement with rooms, but when I look at my plan with the floor camera, I have no ceiling. I've attached some pictures with the structure included. I'm doing something wrong, but I can't figure out what.
  25. Thanks but I'm pretty sure it was my computer and a virus. Other programs stopped working too, so anyway, I'm in the process now of updating to 8.1 and Chief is working perfectly again! Cheers Coralie
