  1. Hi and thanks. I got it. I didn't realise I had an invisible wall up there. Deleted that, but also took out the floating balcony and after rebuilding all the walls around it and redefining them, I finally got it to work. Still having trouble aligning walls but am working on it. Thanks David.

  2. Hi. I am having trouble generating a stairwell up to the 2nd floor over the garage. I have a railing suspended in mid air (attached picture) and the stairwell won't generate. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, but I bet it is something simple.

I'm also having trouble with the wall not generating properly where you can see the icf sticking out, and there is a gap between the ceiling and the roof.

Any help will be much appreciated.

    Cheers and thanks.

  3. Thanks so much Michael. Yep, I really appreciate it you laying out the steps so I could follow along. The last one worked for me. I now have the walls in the drop down menu again. Yay!

    Cheers Mate. :D

P.S. I reckon they need a smilie holding a beer or two.

  4. Preferable is what works for any particular user.  The export/import and the copy/paste method immediately add the Wall Type to the drop-down menu.  The Library method doesn't add to the drop-down until that Wall Type has actually been used in the Plan.  Export/Import allows more than one Wall Type at a time - that has it's own advantages and possibly dis-advantages.

    If I'm sounding like a politician :(

Hi Joe. So I think I understand you. If I click on one of the walls I want from an older plan and then click on export, I can export it to another plan? Can the plan be a new plan?

  5. Hi all,

I don't know what to do about this. 2 of the wall types I use frequently, (ICF Stone and ICF Stucco) have disappeared from my wall types dbx. I have no idea where they are. They just don't show up anymore. I have made new wall types eg. https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-02944/defining-a-new-wall-type.html

I have done this, but don't understand where the 2 walls that were previously there before I had to manually create them have gone. It's a bit of a drag having to create these walls whenever I start a new plan when they were an option before. I don't know what happened here.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

  6. Thanks Guys. Chopsaw, your method worked for me. Thanks. Turned it all to metric.

Hi Glenn. I was using one of the Chief sample plans and modified it to suit our conditions better, but it was all in imperial, so I needed to swap it to metric. I have made the change to creating mine in metric recently as I'm getting ready to send off to suppliers for quotes. Thanks for the tips on dimension lines.

    Cheers

    Coralie

  7. You can switch the Primary Dimension Format Units to metric and your existing and new dimensions will change from metric to imperial.

But this doesn't change the database units, only the dimension units.

ie, all the dbx's and other sizes will remain imperial.

You can copy and paste between a metric and an imperial plan, but the correct scaling will be lost.

Thanks mate. How do you do that?

  8. It probably is bad architecture as I'm no architect. LOL. I think I will have to make some adjustments to my building. It was new, not a rebuild. I have been working on a copy of it, so I'll make a few changes.

    Cheers and thanks.

  9. Thanks Eric and Yusuf so much. That is what I needed. Some ideas on how to do the roof over that section. I had tried a number of different ways, but they looked ridiculous. I'm learning, but I'm getting there. Thanks again so much. Really appreciate it.

    Cheers and thanks

    :D:wub:

P.S. I'll let you know how it turns out.

  10. I am rather sure that Eric and Yusuf both altered the roofs manually in terms of "How". No time like the present to start learning by trying-failing-trying-failing until you obtain a success.

Thanks David. Believe me, I've been doing that. I have tried manually without success. I just needed a helping hand with some ideas. I will get to it.

  11. Hi Guys,

I'm having some trouble with this roof in my plan. I've been trying to create a clerestory roof over the main living area. I think I've done that. I wanted Gable roofs over the garage and the front bedroom, but I'm having a bit of trouble with the in between bits. I'm too afraid to change the hip roof in case it goes wonky. Can someone please take a look at it and tell me what they would do with that bit in between the garage and the bedroom with the gable? I've tried many different solutions, but none seem to work so far.

    Thanks

  12. Thanks for your help guys. I tried both methods and it seemed the last one worked for me. I created a 2nd floor as suggested and called that "open below", and I realigned the stairs. I don't know why, but there was no option to create a stairwell for me, but when I look in the 3D camera, the stairs are going up to the 2nd floor and seem okay. I will attach my plan again. If you wouldn't mind looking at the stairs and telling me what you think, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks again.

  13. Hi all, I sure there is a simple explanation, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with my stairs. I'm trying to put a set of stairs going up from the living room to the bedroom at the top which is over the kitchen. But for the life of me, I can't get it to go up properly. I tried building a stairwell, but it went out over the room, and looks crazy. I had no problem putting in the stairs in the garage, just can't do this one. Can someone please have a look at my plan and tell me what I'm doing wrong please?

    Cheers and thanks

  14. Hi guys. I finally got rid of those walls. I kept having to go in and change all the walls again and then I hit those ones until they changed and stayed changed. So thanks for that tip on no room selection and the attic walls. I'll have to keep working at it though to see if the gaps were resolved, but at least I have a floor now.

    cheers. :)

  15. A lot of your second floor walls are Attic Walls, with No Room Definition.

Group select all the upper floor walls and uncheck Attic Wall and No Room Definition for those walls.

That should be a start and fix most of your problems.

Do the above and then post if there are still more problems.

No Luck. I tried to change them to attic walls but they refuse to delete and I still can't select any rooms. I'm really reluctant to delete the floor and start again as I've done that umpteen times and I finally have the roof going the way I want. I really wish chief had a project tutorial on building these types of cabins with these roofs because they look simple, but are really hard. sigh.

  16. Hi Guys,

I'm attaching my plan for you to see. I'm having a real problem with my 2nd floor. Actually, quite a few problems as you can see. I'll list them below:

    1. There are gaps in my walls and I can't fill them in.

    2. I can't select any of the rooms on the top floor.

    3. There is no floor, but I can't select the rooms to fix the structure.

    4. I can't delete any of the walls inside the rooms on the top floors near the windows at the back.

If anyone can help me with these problems, that would be great. I'm exhausted trying to sort it out.

    Cheers and thanks,

  17. Coralie, you mentioned "not being an Architect" but the truth is that familiarity with 3D roof creation is an acquired skill and I do not mean in University, rather it is countless hours of practice that gradiently increases your own skill. It is similar to learning to ride a bike but after awhile, when you start having some successes along with your failures, your ability becomes more certain and sure. Just stay at it and stay intent.

Thanks David, I will certainly keep at it. I'm so grateful to everyone here on the forums who has taken the time to give me tips and explain things to me. It means a whole lot. I know I'm on a steep learning curve too, but I'm pretty persistent.

    Cheers
