  1. The answer to this problem is to select the wall, open it and set the exterior wall material to use the Plan "Use Default" material. This get's you back to where you were before you "painted" the wall.

Thanks, Joe. That's what I eventually did after many futile attempts to do it other ways.

  2. I went down the same road as Jeff (Northriver) did some time back. Drove me nuts trying to change the walls to a new default when the clients changed their mind and wanted siding instead of brick. Finally came to the same conclusion - if you paint the walls for a different look, you cannot change the plan wall defaults and the expect the painted walls to change; they won't, as Jeff stated.

  3. Putting it on floor 0 means that you cannot get a foundation plan just showing the foundation only, That is why and other reasons that I put it on floor one so I can get a foundation plan with having to show foundation and floor together. To much info here in California to put it on floor 0.

I seem to recall Joey Martin getting a foundation plan "and" putting basements on floor 0. I believe he did it with layersets. A search on the forum should pull this long-standing discussion back up. BTW, I am also in the first camp - but I don't live in California, thank God! :)

  4. I have an older HP 750 (now a 755CM). I had this same problem when I bought a new desktop a few years ago with Win 7 Pro 64-bit. Tried every print driver I could find; none worked. Someone on this forum pointed me to a generic HP driver. Installed it - no luck. It almost seemed like the print job was hung in the print cue and Win 7 would not release it to the plotter. I bought an HP laptop not too long afterwards. It came with Win 7 Home Edition. I installed the same print driver on it and it worked just fine. I never could find an answer why it would not work on the desktop but would on the laptop. Ever since then I use the laptop for my print server and always, as Lew and others suggest, print to PDF first. That change alone has save me a ton of wasted paper and expense as I am able to check the PDF for all of those "extra lines" that I don't want before I print. Also saves cutting down a few trees.

  5. Bryce, I too have had trouble with the Center Camera tool. It seems to be temperamental - sometimes it works, sometimes not so good. I wonder if it is somehow connected to the "Crop Camera" tool changes from X7 (search for this thread if interested). I just don't care for the X8 OOB camera movements; they were, to me, much better in X7. I am always open to improvements, just don't like a step backwards.

  6. Johnny.

No. You don't necessarily need a new annoset for every dimension default you want to use - you just need to set up all the dimension defaults that you need.

You can then be in any annoset and still select a different dimension default without changing any of the other annoset defaults.

Set up your various dimension defaults, switch to a preferred annoset, now, if you want to change to a different dimension default, click the Active Defaults icon (the wrench with the red tick).

You can now select any of your saved dimension defaults while all the other defaults for that annoset will remain unchanged.

Your annoset will change to Using Active Defaults - but the only thing that has changed is your dimension default.

I use this method quite a bit because I don't want a trillion annosets, yet it still gives me lots of flexibility.

Glenn, thinking about plan view, if I follow your method above, change the dimension default, send a view to layout, and then later change the annoset back to the original dimension default to send another view to layout, will the first view also not revert back to the original? Help me out here. This might work for sections (not live views) where the settings are saved with the camera, although I haven't tried it yet to make sure the changed default will "stick" with the view it was sent to. This sort of goes along with another "hot" topic in the forum about "changing layer sets on the fly."

    Always learning, Mike

  7. 3D model done in Chief, then rendered with affects in Lumion.  The combination of Chief and Lumion is incredible.   All the lanscaping was done in Lumion - adding plans, rocks, mulch beds is a breeze.  Time to get all this done in Lumion was about an hour.

Too bad I don't have Lumion (yet) and too bad I am not immediately up to speed with it! ;)

  8. Joey, that's the one I would buy today if I bought another one. I almost mothballed my Leica and bought one anyway but hated to "waste" the money for the Leica. The Bosch you are considering looked the best to me when I researched them recently.

P.S. - have any of you guys had trouble with the Leica E7100i buttons like I have?

  9. Almost all of my plans dimension to the centerline of windows and doors. Doors are not much of a problem, but windows almost always change somewhat in size when the contractor decides which manufacturer he can get the best price/delivery from, so I use centerlines. It would give the framers fits if I dimensioned to R.O. and then things change when the windows show up. Most plans I have to adjust the window labels' extension lines - real pain for something so simple.

    Mike

  10. Unless I am doing it wrong (highly possible :) ) changing the dimension string defaults moves the extension lines for all of that style - not good when you don't want them all moved, just for the labels - IMO.

  11. Search the forum; there have been some discussions in the past on this topic. I started one of them with a similar question and ended up buying the Leica Disto E7100i. It is accurate enough but I hate the design of the button to take the measurements. I cannot do it with one hand and even two hands is a problem. It is too "stiff" and hard to push while trying to hold it steady. I hope it is just my device and not the norm for all of this model.

  12. I make the second floor normal height and move down the roof planes. The pro being spaces in the dormers have the proper ceiling height or collar tie height.

The "story and a half" Cape is a common type in the Northeast. The roof sits on second floor knee walls that may be 2, 3, 4-ish feet tall.

I cannot really compare the two as I have never tried doing it with a 1 1/2" second floor. A con might be if you intend to show space under the roof you'll need to create a third floor that is open to below. Might get fussy with room definitions?

My method also. I also agree with Kevin about the manual dormers. I seem to never get the auto dormers to work right - at least how I want them work. I do many of my house plans using this method where the owner doesn't want a full 2-story.

  13. It's the default hot-key for the Perspective Crop mode for that camera - and that camera only. You will have to type it for every perspective camera you open if you want similar movement to X7; and the camera has to be open and you are in that camera view on your monitor - from my understanding.

    Mike

  14. Click on the Line Style tab and under Drawing Group, select Back Group.

This has worked for me in the past with some success. I usually move things to the front and sometimes forget to try the "move to back group." Sometimes, that just works better.

  15. As I learned, make sure you are tapping the "P" key while you are looking at the camera view on screen -  and before you move the view; no zoom, panning, etc. I originally thought I could do in plan view - wrong.

    Mike

  16. For anyone reading this topic, I went to the Suggestions section (thanks Michael) and put in as a request the ability to have a toggle for the "perspective crop" feature in X8. This essentially changes those cameras to act like X7. If you would like this feature, please go to that section and add your 2-cents.

    Thanks, Mike

  17. You're right.  I guess I wasn't thinking about that being a view specific setting.  I guess your best bet might just be to get used to hitting P (the default hotkey assigned to the Perspective Crop Mode) or add the tool to your toolbar for quick access, or both.

Thanks, Michael - that's just what I do. But, to me, there should be a way to set it as a default. I am sure the CA programmers thought changing the camera operation was a great idea. And maybe it was for some. But, from the sound of it here on the forum, many just don't agree and like the "old" way better. Upgrades - you gotta' love 'um.

    Mike

  18. I have recently upgrade to version 8 and also do not like the new camera changes. I love the way they worked in version 7. If some of you would please guide me how to restore the version 7 functionality as the default I would certainly appreciate it. I have searched the help files and the menus they recommend but do not see a way to set the "crop" feature as a default. It appears that it has to be done for every camera individually. Is that right? I don't like them "moving" on me every time I zoom or pan; it is driving me crazy -- and I don't have very far to go!

    Thanks in advance, Mike

  19. Mike,

You shouldn't have to upload folders. It does this automatically. (Which is the whole point of Dropbox.)

Richard, I upload them because I immediately turn around and send the client a copied link to their folder. I haven't timed how long it normally takes to re-sync a new folder to my account. It may be quick but I just don't know.

  20. This issue has also been causing me a lot of lost time and patience when doing Forum searches I am quite consistently unable to return to my search results after reading a Thread and given this message.  I think this issue may also be related to the others.

Is this happening to anyone else?  Now is the time to get it Resolved so please comment.

    Thanks, Chopsaw

This has happened to me only "for ever!" - so frustrating. I usually use IE for Chieftalk (on IE11 right now on Win 7 and it still does it). I go and do a search on the forum, read a post that looks promising, hit the return to results - "page expired." Now, I always ctrl C my search text before I go to any results. At least that saves some typing; but still frustrating. I have Chrome and may try it as Dan suggested.
