Think I would just change the elevation

Not sure if I am smart enough to do that... this is a secondary building on the lot, which is on a sloped hill.  Was a nightmare just to get the terrain imported correctly.  Maybe Ill just leave the stairs and he wont say anything...  Thanks for all the input.

You might be better off using a deck room for those landings anyway which makes the supports easier anyway.

And you may need to hurry with the drawings since it looks like they are almost finished anyway. ;)

Thanks Chop, the main part is set up as a Deck floor now... maybe I should create another floor underneath it?

As for the need of even doing it, Kootenai County wants to see that the shack is under 200sq ft and I need to show the dimensions.  I agree, almost after the fact but I avoid prop tax increse if I show them its under 200.

  3. Nice... glad the link "kinda" helped...  From what I am gathering... possibly, is that Intel bought the specific card or chipset or whatever and thats why its an Intel thing and not AMD anymore, which also would make sense why the AMD tool wouldnt work...  it's no longer their product.
But you did exactly what I would have suggested next, had that link not worked... keep stepping back on versions until one does work.
Now with that said, lets talk about getting you a new system or at least a new video card.  :)

it appears I can't install a more recent driver.   The driver is a special HP customized version, so the AMD driver installer says:

Very disappointing to pay so much for CA and be unable to even use it. :-(

Hold on... You're holding CA responsible for your crashes?  Not the outdated video card that the manufacturer won't even support from 4yrs ago?

  5. Ok final post on this...

These are the stats on the following pictures and information
    Dell Precision 7760 Laptop
    Windows 11 Pro
CA x13 version:  23.2.0.55x64 (version I had on server)
nVidia RTX A4000 running nVidia 511.09 driver

I also did a 30 second Walkthrough at 2k rez.

Everything seems to work pretty well.

No edits or adjustments to the RT.  Just a quick snapshot to PBRT and lined up a nice shot of his bathroom,

I like to add music to my walk-throughs. CA support says, "we don't have this functionality"

Well, I kind of knew that, but that was all the answer I got.

Does anybody know how to do this as a "peripheral" to Chief?

Grabbed a trial product off the web for this.

Only $39.  Pretty fun to use.

Fair enough but your link is for Desktop cards and the top end RTX would be a 3090. For mobile cards looking at what is available on a Precision *A4000 Mobile) to the closest gaming card (RTX 3080 mobile) I found this for you. In most the RTX is slightly ahead.

The ones that count from what I've seen using CA across 5 machines are Passmark and Open CL (I don't game)

The extra memory of the RTX won't be used in Chief so not the advantage for RTX that is listed.

    image.thumb.png.d4707d452da86544237458666ccf14fb.png

FWIW an 11th gen laptop with a 3080 and similar specs to a Precision runs about $1k less and can be found with more customization and control over the system itself.

Um? the OP's issue is on Win 11, have your tried X13 on Win 11? your signature says you are running Windows 10?

As far as my suggesting to stick with RTX over Quadro...why do what works.

    image.thumb.png.4363fa36c8447b30418d24108a0da580.png

I admittedly dont follow gaming cards or any cards.  My world is servers, networks and firewalls, I didnt know the 3090 was out so thats my bad.

I guess the point I was making is, if noticed, all I have repeatedly said was, "this option works for me".

I am running 3 monitors, 2 are my work monitors and the 3rd runs video cameras, (cameras probably using onboard GPU, havent checked).  Multiple teamviewer remote connections, Solarwinds monitoring and a million other windows.  I can open CA and RT any drawing, including the OPs problematic one, with zero issues.

As for the Win11 try, you are right.  I have not tested it, but my laptop is a a triple boot, Win10\Win11\Linux.  I will install the CA on the  Win11 tonight and try to test (maybe, my back has been hurting, so we'll see.)

Now whether this is a Win11, Win10, 3080, A-Series problem I dont know and the very last thing I want to do is get in any pissing match with anyone.  I personally dont care what anyone uses.  OP asked people to "open it on a laptop" and I did, even RT'ed it.  Flawless.  I let him know my setup and thats it.  But for people, (not you), just in general do dismiss or discount something that works... I just dont get that...

I often have to test client software compatibility with our construction and engieering firms.  This laptop, that I bought in Nov, opens and runs, CAD, Blender, Revit, CA, HDStudio, BlueBeam and probably a couple others with no issues.  I cant tell you how to run any of those programs, but I have tested them, extensively.  Based on our testing, we consult to our clients on what to buy.

I am not saying this is the holy grail and the HAVE TO have... just saying it works for me with CA.  Thats all.
I will report my Win11 findings tonight or tmrw and then be done with this thread.

FWIW, when I first switched to Chief I'd been running Precisions for several years. After just about a year I switched to a gaming machine (clevo/sager) glad I did and would not think of swapping back. For Chief gaming machines work better, now if you run Autocad or Solid works then you will see "some" benefit but Chief will NOT run as well. With all due respect you are comparing the lowest end CAE GPU to the highest (currently) Gaming GPU.  If you are going to snapshot any comparisons, you should compare the A6000 to the 3080.

2021 2020 Deep Learning Benchmarks Comparison: NVIDIA RTX 3080 vs NVIDIA RTX A6000 (bizon-tech.com)

I am running an A4000 on a laptop and have not had one issue that others are struggling with.  Not sure how you can blanketly deny an A-Series GPU when you have never had one, and you have someone telling you they work perfect?

Is there no room for other options or successful combos?

  9. Another option since everyone here loves gaming cards are the Dell Refurbished computers.  They come with full 1yr warranty and the prices are amazing.  We purchase refurbs for our Non Profits quite often and have never really had any problems with them.

    XPS with 3060 - $1172.00

    XPS with 3080 - $1700.00

Throw in a 1TB drive for another $100 and you're done...

  10. Honestly, if you can, I would wait until the new 4000 series cards come out.  Once they hit the market, the hardcore gamers will be picking them up and unloading their 3000 series cards on ebay for a song.  Couple that with the vendors wanting to unload the 3000 series off the shelves to make room for the 4000s, you will get a great deal.
Think of it like TV or cars; great deals to be made when new product and inventory hits the market.

  11. BDillard and I are from the same field, but I doubt you took a monitor or printer on vacation.

Do you know how to read your event viewer logs?
Click your START flag (button) and start typing EVENT, choose the prompt and open Event Viewer.

Then click on APPLICATION and look for any Red Exclamation points.  You may have multiple, find one associated with CA crashing, or your video card crashing.  They will have associated Event IDs that you can Google for resolution
    1023725980_2022-03-1810_57_28-Window.jpg.19a533bc4332b06a8cb7f383b3d9ab28.jpg

After Application, do the same thing for SYSTEM.  Look for the same Red Exclamation points.  Do the same as Application.

Lastly, run your Dell\Alienware SupporAssist and then check for hardware drivers.  These are specific to your actual laptop.  It will find outdated drivers and even BIOS updates you need.  Latest, greatest from nVidia or other vendors might not always be best.  You may even have to step down or backwards from nVidias latest to Dell\Alienwares recommended.
    Hope this helps

Since the NVidia RTX3080 or 3080TI is almost impossible to buy, which of the other RTX30** GPUs will do as good or nearly as good a job?

In answering the OP, Viki asked about alternatives to the 3080.  I will restate as this seems to have gone off topic.

I have an A4000 in a laptop.  I cannot address the decibels claimed on Workstation cards, as I literally dont hear my laptop... ever.  It sits right in front of me closed.  And I suffer from Misophonia, (look it up, it sucks to have).

As for this being designed for a SFF, thats not true.  Its a standard height card and wont fit in an SFF and, again, nVidia says in their press release its for "workstations'.
Comparing the A4000 to the top RTX 3080 is not a fair comparison.  As stated above its a single slot GPU and the dual slotted,3080\90\Ti class is basically top shelf (currently).  If one wanted to draw an apples to apples showdown, then you would have to look at the top A6000 dual slot GPU...

All I was trying to state is, as an owner and user of the A4000, its flawless, I have both HDS (purchased), CA 13 trial, running while remoting into multiple servers, Outlook, browsers, Pandora and a slough of other background apps running.  No overheating, no fan noise and I can render RT and make stupid little movies with breeze.

Viki, I would highly recommend the A4000.  Remember, higher numbers dont always translate to 'best'.  A top benchmarked gaming GPU may not be best suited for C\A\E design.  In lay terms... (Cuz Im a car guy), you can have 650HP Corvette, but you arent going to use it to pull your boat...  The A Class series GPUs seem to be specifically designed for this field.

I'm going to guess based on specs the A4000 will be louder but compable in performance to an overclocked 3060 or low end 3070- due to the thinner cooling fan.

    3080    - 9860 cuda cores, 272 tensor cores , 68 RT cores, Tensor performance 238 tflops

A4000 - 6144 cuda cores, 192 tensor cores, 48 RT cores, Tensor performance 153 tflops

Google some benchmarks.  The A Series cards are designed for Archs\Eng.

For what it's worth I literally NEVER hear my fans in my laptop.

From what I've been reading over the last hour or so, I'm not really understanding the desire for gaming video cards and not cards specifically designed for Archs\Engineers and Media Creators?

If this was my field, I think I would be all over the A Series cards and let the miners and gamers fight for the 30XX series cards.

  14. I have a Dell Precision 7760 I just bought in November.  I was more interested in the 128GB Memory and 4 SSD slots, for VMs and IT Tools.  It has an RTX A4000 that seems to run everything pretty flawlessly including RT.
I am not a gamer or even an architect, so I cant breakdown the diff between 3060s, 3080s and A4000s, but from what I am reading the A Series are more Engineering\Architect focused than the 30XX series gaming cards.  Specifically calls them "Professional" and even states it delivers real time ray tracing...
I think these cards are probably more readily available than the more popular gaming 30XX cards...

    Hello,

I suppose I could redraw them but I'd like to know what I did wrong please.

Did you happen to copy/paste any items?  Dwellings?

I did this the other day when I copied an outbuilding from one plan, into main plan.

Half my walls were flashing and looks the way your photo shows.

I had to go back and redo the material of each wall and I was fine

  16. Thanks everyone, so I was able to find my problem.  My first floor, (Walkout basement) was set to 13ft of depth into the hill... the second floor, was 25ft into the hill as it sloped back going up the hill... both are ideally where I want the back walls.... but
If I move the walkout basement wall back to be under the upper floor wall, the slope bleed goes away.
I tried the Hole idea and it made the grass bigger in the room and seemed too much work (Im just not that familiar yet with the program).

My goal now is to get footing, foundation and wall measurements for excavation, so inside it doesnt matter really... yet.
