  1. Lori,

How are you trying to change the ceiling height?...through the Default Settings, or double clicking in the individual room?

If you change through the default settings, then it will change the whole plan.  If you double click the individual room then it will change only that room.

Also, make sure that the room dividers are forming an actual closed room.  Sometimes those little buggers can be tricky...

  2. Terry,

Is Chief hard to learn, or just that you use a multitude of other software that you find yourself doing commands and actions that match what those do?...

I'm just curious, because I started using Chief in High School (probably almost 18 years ago now) and it was somewhere around version 7 or 8.  Then I hadn't used Chief for close to 6 years.  In fact I was not even working in the architectural industry in that time.  Then, one day I got offered a job where I am now.  They said that they use Chief.  I was nervous because I hadn't used it in so long that I knew they were expecting me to start cranking out drawings.

Needless to say, I jumped in with both feet.  It was totally different than what I was taught in high school so I had to relearn everything.  I would say that I was a competent user within a month and just get more and more comfortable as time goes on.  I'm not a guru by any means, but I can usually find the answer with a little looking.

Fast forward almost 9 years, and I just trained our second draftsperson who had ZERO knowledge of Chief (let alone the building industry), and she was confidently making drawings within 1-2 months.

I understand that this is one persons story and other people learn differently.  But I encourage you to not give up, and to feel free and ask questions whenever you have them.  You have many good users at your disposal who are willing and eager to help, and if you want send me a PM and I will shoot you my email.  You can then email me whenever you want and I will try and personally answer any question you might have (to the best of my abilities).

That was a bit of a tangent, but I'll say I think that X8 will be great.  I'm sure there's going to be new features...I'm sure you'll think they're useless...but here's the great thing, you can draw how YOU want to.  Then as you progress in skill level, you'll learn more and more features.

  3. Open a new totally blank plan.

Place the object you want to edit from the library into the plan.

Go to a 3D view of the object and select "Delete Surface" (see 1.png).

Select all of the surfaces you want to delete.

When everything is removed that you want removed, then go to Tools>Symbol>Convert to Symbol

Make sure you don't close out of your 3D view while you're deleting surfaces, otherwise you'll have to re-do it.

  4. It's because the material for "Fir Framing" type is set to lumber.

    Click your rainbow tool.

Click on the Fir Framing material painted bone.

In the General Tab under "Specifications" change the material type to "Area".

Then try using the eye dropper to color it.

    See attached.

  5. Here's the ChiefTalk thread:

Without having the actual .dwg file it's hard to say which layer has the elevation data on it.  The elevation points are blocks, and I believe at the UGM they mentioned that you can't have blocks with elevation data.

If I were to guess though, I would say the CG_Main_Contour layer could have some elevation data on it.

Try zipping the .dwg file and attaching it here.

  6. I can get it with one wall and the use of four p-line solids...

Not sure if it's what you want or not...but looks somewhat right.

-Made my window 12" wider than I wanted.

    -Removed exterior and interior casing

    -Turned on the interior sill

    -Turned off frame

-Inset my sash something like 1 1/2"

-Made the sides of my sash 6" wider than normal

-Drew a curved polyline solid for the inside, and just a plain polyline solid box for the outside

-Adjusted them to fit the height

    -Copy and paste-hold the solids

-Reflected about the center of my window

I also attached my plan so you can dissect it...

  7. What also drives me nuts (short trip) is when I make several moves, changes in a row and then want to undo the last one

all the changes get undone not just the last one.  A real PITA!

This only happens to me if I'm editing an elevation in a layout.  Sometimes Undo undoes a couple steps at a time...
