This decision will benefit me from the development of long awaited feature requests through dependable budgeting for Chief.
This decision will benefit me by thinning my low-budget, undercutting, competition on contract work.

Historical data shows me I am 500% faster than I was in X8...I have reaped benefits through increased margin for years...I don't love financial change, but a bit of pragmatism and a quick glance at your books should sit ones head back on straight.

Also...a good CPA should get you lined up and straightened out :)

I agree with Rene. I have used another cad system, Builders Cad, that quit updating their product and basically went out of business. I don't want that to happen again! That forced me to move to and learn another system, Chief Architect. Chief has done a good job of updating its product with new features. Hence I have always been more than happy to pay their SSA fee just to get the new features and libraries. I understand the SSA fees may not be enough to keep the product updates coming. I'm happy to see that Chief is keeping their existing users under their same program of the SSA. If I were a new user I would still buy Chief over any other software.

I'm working on a new plan and just noticed that my Living Area square feet notation is missing. This is the second plan I have worked on in the past number of days that this has happened.

I keep a text file with Chief fixes that I only use once in a blue moon. The living area is one of the items. Another is turning off rooms in the layer set to show the subfloor ISO the finish floor.

If you really are having your life ruined by this current policy, then communicate to Chief Arcthect Inc directly. Complain to Customer service or directly to Scott Harris (they can do something about it). Here on the forum, we have no direct influence. Chief Inc is a small company, so communicating your concerns there is the proper communication venue, not here. We solve solvable problems here not ones out of our purview and authority.

I have notified chief architect.  Mainly want the users to understand what chief is doing to be sure they dont have the same issue I had today. Not often I dont have internet service.

    Have a great day.

I don't understand.  I have both X10 & X11 installed and can open both simultaneously on a single machine.

Of course if you don't activate at least one of them before going to a remote location without Internet access then you wouldn't be able to use either.

Just make sure you do this before leaving for a job site.  Then you will have both versions available.

If you only activate x10 you can not use x 11 on that machine. They deactivate simultaneously but must be activated separately.

  5. When you unlicense  x11 it also unlicenses x10 or if you unlicense  x10 it also unlicenses x11. That is fine and I understand why it is being done. However is should also work the other way if I license x11 for my laptop then it should give me access to x10 or vise versa..

Case in point, I licensed x10 on my laptop to go into the field and meet with a client on a job, I have been working on for a while. Unfortunately the drawing had been opened and saved in x11 and was in the wrong file folder. Being in the middle of nowhere without internet connection I was hosed <that's the nice word> thanks to chiefs new way to  license. If you are going to remove access to x10 and x11 if just one is unlicensed then if I license one product the other should be licensed on the same machine it should automatically give access to the other product.

Chief please fix this MAJOR licensing problem.

Though this should always be done I have never found it to have much if any effect on speed, tends to be more related to display quality and certain camera attributes. No harm in checking.

I just had a friend put in a GTX 2080. Until he made this change he had 4 to 6 seconds lag time...

Remove chief from your control panel and see what happens

I messed around with the texture posted by DJP above  and the chiefsiding.pat file and made a new 8" center material but you can change the size in the material definitions note the the size you input will need to be larger than real size to get it to measure (tape tool) correctly in elevations etc , eg for this 8" center board I have the size at 9 1/2".

note that due to the texture is is not "real" 3D but the best I have tried/seen so far.

change the .zip file extension to .calibz  (can't post calibz's)   and install as normal ,it should show in My Library as Board and Batten 8"

***Updated File plus added New Pattern file used to update the Materials

    B&B Siding.calibz

Since Making This Library , another way of doing this was discovered , have a look at the thread and the new library is here:

    Thanks for the pattern!

There have been lots of helpful tips for working with larger files. Thank you for all your comments. This discussion has already born fruit for me. Just for reference I am going to post my pc specs.

I wonder if we're under-valuing disk performance. My Passmark ratings (v9.0) are generally very good:

But my disk bench can't come close to touching Ken's. Unlike Ken, I DO experience significant slow-down with very large models, especially when running with more than one Chief window open on multiple displays. I also operate on in a Domain with all our working files on a LAN, which may degrade performance.

The PCI-e ssd is one of the major items to speed up the computer. Even moving from a ssd drive to the PCI-e made a huge difference in speed. Do not under estimate how a hard drive effects the system speed. I do work with all of my files local to improve speed.

Thanks Ken, have built many myself but am looking for a genuine performance gain before I drop another $2500++ on a computer. Your system looks promising.

Curious if you are up to speed on the latest and greatest in new CPU's? Is your 5960x still the top dog, without completely breaking the bank? Or are there newer chips that outperform it? I read recently that the newer chips were not that impressive for the cost. Thanks in advance.

I would not go the extra cost of the new cpu. No real advantage / cost ratio. I had looked at swapping mine out and selling my cpu but after the investigation decide to stay where I am.

  11. Take a look at this topic in computer speed for comparisons.  There are other benchmarks before and after my post below

I have never found my computer slow in large complex 6000 sf plus detailed with many 3d items.

If you want to get an idea what speed a new computer would be the run a complete backup of your drawing and contact me. We can even d an online meeting for you to see the speed.

    Robert,

How far is your object away from absolute zero?

I suspect that it's a long way as I can only duplicate what you are seeing under that circumstance.

If so, move it closer to absolute zero.

    These pics are using X8.

No problems when I move the object close to zero.

    Glenn,

I would have never thought of that but you are most likely correct! My patterns show correctly unless they are moved far from zero
