It makes no sense to dimension this way for sure. I am not one to call out others for mistakes but damn, the brick isn't even scaled evenly so how can a framer lay this out? I was hired by the homeowner to modify it, which was never built, and it is going to make my job harder but I have my secrets to get it done. From the sheets I have it is just the floor plan and 4 elevations so I am thinking it wasn't a buildable set in the first place. Again, i'm just saying, not cutting anyone down.

it IS a giant PITA for the framers. i never do this and though there may be, i can't imagine a situation where one might need too. many years ago, we built numerous projects designed by, ironically, an architect from Alabama who always dimensioned from the brick. it must be something they teach at Auburn.

  2. my renders in X12 are FAR better than X13. and this is using the same camera with the same settings in the same plan. and they still look awful in X13. i've submitted this to support and they have no idea. so...i'm still using X12.

Hi I saw your post.  I am considering upgrading from my 2019 iMac to the MacBook Pro M1 Max.

I am having difficulty getting clean 3D rendering output from my iMac 2019 after upgrading from X12 to X13.  X12 renders on my iMac looked great, X13 renders are blurry and washed out.

I have opened a support ticket, but I am wondering if perhaps with the upgrades to the graphics performance from X12 to X13 that this has somehow revealed some limitations with the current graphics card on my iMac that is degrading 3D performance output in X13.

And so, after seeing this thread, I was wondering if you would be willing to share with me 5 minutes of your time and take a look at my .plan file on your M1 Max and do just two quick things:

    1. Open the two camera views I have and screen shot just the standard, vector and physical outputs for me?
    2. Screen record a single aerial birdseye spin around the home via mouse to let me know how fluid the performance is?

I'd like to see how they compare to the render files I have in this Dropbox folder:  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9zt4tagbuhsfkbi/AABsTnIW6DjT5uExeP6e5mcAa?dl=0

If you would be willing and are able, I would be most appreciative.

    Kind Regards,

same here, so i'm using X12. very frustrating.

I am trying to lower the ceiling in two rooms.  All walls in home are 120" and I want ceiling in entry and kitchen to be 109".  I have read everything I could find and as close as I can get is using shelf ceiling and using soffit for ceiling.  Almost works but gives me a gap between two ceiling heights.  Any suggestions?

double click the room, then change ceiling height under Structure.

Save your money...the current iMac that Apple has released is a toy. The pro model is not due to be released until maybe October. Dammit....

As far as my research goes...Apple silicon M1 or whatever the next version is (M1X or M2) will be incredibly fast and efficient. The fan in the new iMAC may never come on. I'm not an expert...but I believe Apple will be placing their graphics GPU on the chip. Chief does not support the M1 chipset.

Apple isn't helping...the new super duper iMAC is long overdue. I'm going to probably purchase an intel based iMAC now...and trade it in next year if Chief gets onboard and X14 supports Apple GPU...whatever it turns out to be.

Quite frustrating to be an Apple user right now...and using Chief to make a living.

yes.... and i just recently renewed my SSA. now i wish i had saved my money.

here is the plan.. 2nd sharpe house.plan

i attached a plan that has what you want but i'm not sure you can open it since it was done in X12. there were a few things that i did: realigned the upstairs wall on the right with the downstairs wall, eliminated the wall on the backside (inside of the bay window), eliminated the bay window wall to the right and then redrew the far right wall at an angle which allowed the corner to build correctly, moved the porch roof up to second floor and worked it around the bay window (it was cutting into that space), turned off the auto roof return on second floor and redrew it manually, manually drew in roof returns on front of dormer, manually drew in attic walls above bay window, pulled up bay window walls a couple inches to close gap with attic walls above bay window. Maybe this will help.

    Hi

Attached is an image showing my concept on the left and actual house on the right with 2nd floor bay window circled   I have been at this for a over a day and a half.  Here's my issue

I tried the build  "bay window"  install but couldn't get the roof to look as it is in the picture.  I then tried manually building the bay windows and still cant get the roof line like in the photo.  I've read the manual and watched videos  but the returns do not look  at all like in the photo sometimes the boxed return just look lot a lot of fascia   I even tried the roof dormer  ( but of course it did not work no roof to install it in . )  I used the wall specification to ensure the wall is a gable wall..

When I actually do generate a reasonable facsimile ( not a good looking one) and go to change- update or delete a component then my full roof return disappears

    Any help would be appreciated.

post the plan and someone will take a look.

I don’t think anyone here was suggesting that you change your standards to fit the program. I know that I for one was only offering my personal advice from the perspective of somebody who has laid out thousands of walls as a framer and I only chimed in because the topic was already being discussed. I probably wouldn’t have said anything otherwise.

Anyway, as others have already pointed out, dimensioning to the center of your walls is totally doable in Chief. Shouldn’t be a big deal at all.

I did want to take a moment to re-visit the wall centerline dimensioning standard again though— this time completely in your defense.  During my commute to work this morning I gave this subject some brutally honest consideration and it occurred to me that even in my own practices, centerline dimensions would have one major advantage that until now I had never considered or even heard mentioned...They allow for both verbally communicating and remembering a dimension without having to also communicate/remember which side of wall A and which side of wall B are being referenced.  Only thing to communicate and remember is dimension and framing thickness.  I can’t say that I’m planning on switching my drafting standards anytime soon because I have other reasons for marking edges as well, but I can finally see at least one completely logical reason a person might prefer centerline dimensions.  Sorry for giving you grief.

as i stated before, we always used centers and for the very reason you mentioned -there is no question as to where the wall goes because it goes in the center. i once hired a framer from Georgia that preferred edges and his terminology was "set ahead" or "set back" when noting a measurement to the edge of a wall.

Dimensions set to wall centers are a great way to NEVER get a referral from that builder again.

this must be a local preference. i framed and built for 30 years and preferred the dimensions to the centers. in fact, every builder and/or framer i knew preferred the same.

you totally rocked that! was it just a matter off connecting roof planes or did i have wall properties messed up? (i.e gable walls)

    thanks man!

it was just a matter of connecting, breaking and reconnecting some of your roof planes. and adding attic walls.
