rwaldrondesigns
Our office uses Revit for architecture and Chief Architect for interiors (don't ask... we have a stubborn architect... my husband). We are always working to make both drawing styles look similar and one thing I'm having a tough time aligning is the new/existing work. Revit shows existing items in a lighter grey and the new items in black. It seems like this should be easy enough. I created a layer called "existing" and put all existing items on it, in grey. Then, I drew new items in. Yay, looking good. BUT, the windows in plan only show the glass as grey, and the sills are black: It's all one object and the layer SHOULD all be grey: Any thoughts on how I can get the full window to display as grey? Thanks!!!

The casing and sill layers are different than the window itself. Select a window. Under Active Layer Display Options you'll then see all the layers associated with a window element: You'll then see the layers Casings, Exterior and Casings, Interior. These control casing and sill display: For this window I changed the window to blue and the casing layers to magenta.

In all the years I've been using Chief, I was never aware of the "active layer display options"!!!! It just shows I need to click around more, lol. Thank you! So, I can change the layer colors in active layer display options, but that changes it for ALL casework. How might I do this for existing windows only, ensuring that the windows on the new windows layer come in entirely black? Maybe another user with more experience than me will chime in? But, you might look into Reference Display method for as-built / demolition plans. If you don't already know, you could set your existing plan as a grey line underlay to your proposed / new work plan. Items in the new work plan that get deleted or put on turned off layers will allow the grey line "existing" background to shown through. This method might work good for what you want to do.
