Missing Ceiling Joists

I lost the view of ceiling joists on the 2nd floor after correcting various wall angle, alignment, height and floor fixes. As the corrections were made I rebuilt the walls and floors individually and in some cases retained the framing so as not to change things that were fixed. The missing ceiling joists are only affecting the 2nd floor in both the house and garage and not an addition that is only on the 1st floor level, so the Framing, Ceiling Joist layer is selected and displaying. Although the ceiling joists are missing, the ceiling strapping or furring is displayed in the garage but not in the house.

 

Looking at the Room Specification>Structure>Ceiling Structure the ceiling is defined with the joist and strapping sized correctly and each are tagged as Framing. Another anomaly, that is most likely related, is the strapping (colored magenta) on the back of the garage ceiling goes off angle and displays into the house ceiling, shown below. The garage and house ceiling are isolated since the rooms and are individually selectable. Please offer some guidance on what things should be checked to help isolate and resolve this issue.

 

Another point to note, I recently transitioned from Home Designer Pro 2024 plan to Chief Architect X15. The plan is in its 7th version and all work has been done in HDP. This iteration was to angle the garage to improve the look from the street and avoid the septic system. I opted to move instead of delete/redraw the garage and have had many troubles in HDP 23 & 24. I am new to X15, as I just bought the license Dec. 13th and opened the HDP plan after the modifications were done. I have been using the X15 trial version to learn and experiment for a couple of weeks with a copy of the 7th plan iteration, but not able to save changes then lost the changes when the program halted. The X15 align wall tools and rebuild of individual wall and floors were the main reasons for the upgrade.

Hello Solver,

The plan file is 38 MB and archived into a Zip it shrinks to 32.7 MB. Is there another way to share the plan given the 14 MB attachment limit?

One thought is to make sure that the C.J. framing in the room DBX is checked as default, and the default C.J. is checked framing.

All someone needs is the shell -- no plants, cars etc. And don't use the Backup Entire Plan tool -- just zip the plan file.

 

If that doesn't work, copy the plan, delete all the stuff and try that. You can use the All Layers Off layer set to quickly delete things by setting, for example, Fixtures to display, then group select and delete.

Sorry of the delayed response. I attempted to clean up other wall height and floor level issues and messed more things up. Got those things corrected and retained the framing so as not to loose manual framing components. I also attempted to delete the ceiling joist and rebuild them, but they would not rebuild. I used Drawzilla's suggestion to elect the Default Ceiling Joist check box and only the garage ceiling redrew, but the original problem is still there.

Eric,

 

I found an angled wall anomaly in the attic on the left side of the house, where the 2nd floor bumps out over the 1st floor (part of the Colonial Garrison design). After straightening that attic wall, the 2nd floor ceiling became separated from each other and the ceiling framing follows the Joist Direction arrows as seen below. I also changed the ceiling joist height to 9 1/4" instead of 7 1/4" to define a different ceiling platform, as explained in Help, but changed it back top 7 1/4  and the ceiling rebuilds just fine. So that part of the problem is solved... I hope.

 

 

The other part of my problem is the ceiling framing anomaly, 'strapping', as I call it. I probed deeper and found the extra lines have a Role as Automatic (Ceiling Joists) but are drawn with the a Width of 1 1/8" and material Type of LVL. That is not what is define in the finished ceiling structure anywhere, which is 3/4" and Lumber. The 1 1/8' and LVL combination is the Rim Joist specification. Below is the object detail specification box showing the Framing Specification (Ceiling Joist). This strapping is automatically generated when the ceiling is generated, so manually editing them is possible, but doesn't help me understand why CA is generating them in this manner. I'm open to suggestion, but curious to know if this is a software bug?

After spending way too much time trying to resolve the strapping issue I called technical support. Nathan assisted me and confirmed what Eric indicated, that there is no mechanism to control the direction of the framing and the anomaly is most likely due to some miss connected or skewed wall or surface. The most efficient way to resolve is to manually make the correction as Eric suggested above.

 

After working to resolve these problems, I think it would be beneficial to add control of the strapping to support it orientation.  This could be done in the ceiling specification or with a strapping direction pointer similar to the joist direction tool. I will add this to the suggestion thread.
