Split Railing Issue

Just wondering if anyone knows how to keep a split wall from reverting back when a change is made

An Example:

I am splitting a deck railing so that one half has balusters and the other half is open

I split the railing then select one half and change it to open.

When I enter the change the entire railing becomes open and the split is gone.

This could be an easy fix, just struggling to find it.

you just need to change one setting in the Wall, anything, so they are not identical and they won't join up again, doesn't necessarily need to be reverse layers but that works for Railings and interior walls where it doesn't mater which side is the exterior side.
