Semi Transparent Walls/Plan View

I am referencing an imported PDF drawing to trace my plan.

Is there a way to make the exterior walls semi transparent (in the palm view) so I can see where to place windows and doors.

I tried to make the wall (invisible) but it then won't let me place doors or windows.

Hope that makes sense.

What I do is turn of "wall layers" this removes the wall fills and displays only an outline.

Then to see the walls a little better, I turn on reference display and set the same floor so that there is an overlay with the coloured dashed lines as well as the exterior walls.
