Did you check Help?

Reflections
Reflections are another aspect of lighting that can increase a 3D view’s realism. When a flat surface is assigned a Mirror material, it can display the reflections of other objects in the scene. A material can be assigned the Mirror class in the Define Material dialog. See Properties Panel.
Note that a Mirror surface cannot display the reflection of another mirror. When one mirror can be seen in another, its material is shown rather than a reflection.
Reflections only generate in Perspective 3D views using the Standard Rendering Technique. They can slow down 3D view generation and responsiveness considerably and are turned off by default in the Camera Defaults dialog. See General Panel.
Reflections can be toggled on or off in a camera view by selecting 3D> Camera View Options> Toggle Reflections  as well as in the Camera Specification dialog. See Camera Panel.

checked the settings and all seems correct.  The first time I had this problem it was caused by

having enhances lighting checked.  Don't know what is causing it now.

Oops, actually enhanced lighting does need to be checked.  Did not seem to have any affect yesterday

but came back to the office to a computer restart, toggled enhanced lighting and now all seems OK.

Weird.
