  1. So I am designing a separate rental unit in the basement of a home. The city fire department wants a 1 hour fire rated ceiling for the lower unit, floor of the upper home. Right now there are conventional 2x10 floor joists separating the two units with 3/4" T&G ply on the floor above. Is anyone aware of the easiest layer makeup to achieve the 1 hour rating? I would like to see most of the required layering be on the lower ceiling so that additional material layers would not have to be at different elevations on the top layer ends where it does not need to be 1 hour. My initial thought that 5/8 x rated rock on the lower ceiling might work but i think there needs to be the equivalent of 5/8 x rock on both surfaces. Then I was thinking cut 5/8 first and install it between joists close to the upper sub floor. but tenably I think since the top of the floor joist would not be covered it may not work. The good thins is there are no wires or ductwork in the way at this point. Hope that made sense. Thanks in advance.
  2. Disappears when I try to move it into place. I put a 1/2" deep soffit in the top of the niche which solved the problem but there must be an easier way.
  3. The light is a chief recessed ceiling 2" mini can.
  4. I am trying to put a mini spot in a wall niche. When I get the elevation right and move it into the niche it disappears. Rope light works.
  5. and as Californian's know, cities are stopping gas from being installed in new homes. And mandating car chargers in their garages. the obscene part is California does not allow any more electrical generating plats so they bye most of their electricity from other states. Then there are the rolling blackouts!!!!
  6. I WILL PLAY AROUND WITH IT. IF I CHANGE THE LOCATION I CAN GENERATE A SHADOW. SO POSSIBLY I NEED TO DOUBLE CHECK THE LATIDUDE AND LONGITUDE.
  7. IT IS TO BOTH. i THINK IT HAS SOMTHING TO FO WITH THE LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE I PUT IN FOR THE HOUSE LOCATION.
  8. Sun Angle and Plan View Shadows (chiefarchitect.com)
  9. THAT DOES WORK BUT THEN i LOOSE ALL DIMENSIONS ARROWS AND SUCH. i WATCHED THE VIDEO ON CHIEF AND HE DOES IT USING THE FIRST FLOOR PLAN. AND IT WORKS FINE FOR HIM BUT NOT FOR ME.
  10. THE CITY WANTS A SHADOW DIAGRAM DONE THAT SHOWS HOW THE NEW HOUSE WILL CAST ITS SHADOW ONTO THE NEIGHBOR SO AS NOT TO INTERFERE WITH THEIR SOLAR PANELS THAT NOW DO NOT EXIST. SO i HAVE ENTERED A NORTH AROW IN MY PLAN AND FILLED IN ALL THE LATITUDE, LONGITUDE AND DATE AND TIME AND THE LENGTH OF THE SHADOW. THE SUN ANGLE APPEARS ON THE PLAN BUT NO SHADOW IS CAST. SO DOWN ON THE TASK BAR THERE IS A BUTTON FOR CAST SHADOW BUT IT DOES NOTHING. ANYONE HAVE AN ANSWER TO THIS PERPLEXING ISSUE?
  11. Anyone know where to get a material to depict board on board or board and batten material? Maybe an 8" exposure and a 2" batt? I do not think my abilities allow me to make that material in chief.
  12. Thank you for that. But with closed cell foam don’t you have to fill the whole bay to the face of rafter?? Or can it be half filled?
  13. This is not a program issue. I am looking for a good detail for venting a cathedral ceiling. I get that we need 1.5" above the insulation in each bay or rafter space. But how many sq. inches of opening at the soffit and at the ridge for the ridge vent? and engineers hate this ridge venting in general because it destroys their roof diaphragm. Anyone also have a detail to use on a plan?
  14. thanks. For some reason I did not know that.
  15. I have a room with a vaulted ceiling. In camera view is shows that way. When I check the room specifications i have the flat ceiling unchecked but when I to a wall elevation camera fiew it cuts the wall off at what should be the plate height. Not sure what is going on there.
  16. Thanks RGARDNER, I love figuring out new ways do do a design. Cant wait to try the joined roofs.
  17. When you say make one do you mean a polyline solid?
  18. I am designing a pergola. So I am wondering if on the support beams and the rafters, which I made from general framing, can have a detail on the ends similar to a roof fafter tail.
  19. I want to do a half wall that also acts as th stair railing. Although maybe 1/3 of the way and then build an open railing on top of that closed railing.
  20. great video. Solved the issue.
