Yes, I agree but sometimes when I search for an answer to something it usually with help me to understand something that I have been missing or open my eyes to something else. In this case is was just a big waste of everybody's time!

I'm not one of those who believes in the 'there's no such thing as a dumb question' mantra... but your question was totally legit.  It is definitely a bit of an anomaly in Chief.

I don't believe that line weight number goes to anything. Its just there doing nothing. This layer is just to separate the main layer from everything else quickly for the framing plan and other uses.

I never dwelled on this before, but it always seemed to me that Chief just set that 'layer' up as a toggle, to turn on and off the extra layers making up a wall.

If you do a Save As and change the Plan name, you will automatically unlink the new plan from the layout file.  Chief has a goofy behavior though where the open layout will start displaying information based on the current plan file.  The links are only temporary though and have not actually been changed.  To address this, I usually just close the layout down and then open it right back up.  Been that way for a long time.  I really should report it.  I don't like it.  Is that what you're talking about?

Wow... yes, I didn't know it, but that's what I'm talking about.  It happened to me a couple days ago, and since I didn't know that, I went through and relinked all the files in the Layout to the older plan file.  Aye-yai-yai...that definitely is not a good behavior.  So glad I got your explanation. I think this can explain many moments of absolute confoundment over the years.

  4. Could be wrong, but I think everyone's grasping for straws here.  My straw grasp is  that she's saying the cad mask for any given room works for that room, but then when she wants to do it for an adjacent room the cad mask for the previous room blocks the adjacent room.   If that is correct, then you'd need to either send the views to layout as an image or as 'update on demand' only, then move and adjust the cad mask for each room.... OR create a new layer and SPV for each cad mask arrangement needed for each room and turn them on and off as needed.

Not a logical reason...   That is for sure.....

Hmm... I can kind of see some logic in this, because there's probably some issue in getting a snap to discern a .5 degree or less difference.  At least that's something I can keep in mind before trying to add the angle.
This reminds me I need to add a suggestion related to the 'Additional Angles' preferences dialogue.  Why is it that we have only a choice between having to select 15 degree or 7.5 degrees?  Seems to me we should be able to have a smaller angle selection set....like just 90 degree or 45 degree snaps.  Most of the time when using drag-tab-enter distance I would want to have just 45 degrees snaps...  as too often I have to type the distance AND correct the angle  in the Tab dialogue.

You can place up to 8 Additional Angles into your General Plan Defaults and they will not give the warning and also allow you to snap to those angles for walls and accessories when angle snaps are turned on, which also helps.

Great tip Chop!.... never considered this before.  I guess because one or two walls giving the reminder once in a while isn't enough of a pain to seek a workaround. alternative solution.  Will definitely remember to add that to my to-do list when I have off-angle walls in the future.

I have created a number of dormer and roof videos on my YouTube page

Another Home Run video Steve... nailed it.   Nice tip I didn't know about with the balloon through ceiling...

how do you get rid of the ceiling part that was cutout, and now attached to the roof truss?

Just tell the client you designed a magnetic holder for the access cover to keep it safely out of the way when you're using the access

  9. @Chris_CapeCod  I agree with Glenn with regard to using symbols in this particular situation, however the point Ryan made about model size can become an issue, so there is another way to do this besides using symbols, by using the Reference Display ability.  You can have two different plans but bring the garage in, in both plan view and 3D views.  Here's a Chief video to get you started  https://www.chiefarchitect.com/videos/watch/5435/using-the-reference-display.html?playlist=100

You know what else will apply the wood grain correctly is the Shelf tool.  Also a lot faster when building a shelf.

Thanks for the tip Ryan!  I never get into modifying cabinetry to the level of shelving, so I've never used that tool.  Now that I know about this aspect I'll be using it instead of p-solids when it suits.
