  1. As-Built, HIp Roof, 8' ceiling. Roof has an 18" soffit (6 on 12). They built the roof (rafters sitting on a plate on top of ceiling joists not on wall plates). We've done this many times.  So how do I get CA to do this?  See Section below, This is what I'm trying to replicate. i would imaging adding a second floor, remove ceiling and floor surface, etc.,etc.. How say you...Better options. I'm fine with just the cad drawing, But I would like to see it in 3D framing.

    Thanks,

    Doug

That's not what I said to do.  I said to change the file...so that you're referencing the correct plan. Select the Old Plan from the list of Referenced Files, click the Browse button, and then select your New Plan.

Thanks Michael, I understood exactly what you said. I was in a hurry and the ALDO plan needed to be Archived anyway.  I didn't want it to be gone just yet per-say,  First I wanted to find what it was referencing IN the ALDO plan. Which ended up being a Cad detail. After removing it, I then went back and did as you said. All is good, Thanks again.

This you should be able to do without even figuring the problem out. Just go to Tools>Layout>Referenced Plan Files and change all linked files to the one single file of your choice.

Thanks Michael... via Tools>Layout>Referenced plan files, it did show that Aldo plan file was being referenced...for now I just moved it to my Archives. No longer referencing but upon opening Phillips layout it's looking for it.  Just ignored for now,  My problem unfortunately is why...when I finished Aldo job I did a "save as" (as I typically do) the Layout as my default layout template deleting everything but cad lines (boarders etc) text (general notes etc., code notes) Client info and so on.  However, with the Phillips layout open (prior to moving Aldo plan) It was showing in PB everything, Cad details, Cameras you name it. Obviously I missed doing something during save as template cause this has never happened before X15. The Phillips plan is first project done in X15 which I brought up from X14.  My layout template had not been opened till I was in X15. Hope that makes sense. I'm hoping I don't have to re-make my layout template with all the text boxes etc. Which are done in Plan Cad details. which I think may be the problem / link. Including schedules.

    Yeah that should work...good idea

Bummer, NG,...being the ALDO plan is out the door, I changed everything in the layout to a different color, saved, then opened the Phillips Layout, Nothing
I changed in Aldo layout had changed in Phillips. I'm thinking, being Aldo is done and out the door, If I move the Also plan file it to a different location or remove it completely from the drive it should remove it from the PB. Unfortunately doing this doesn't reveal the actual culprit.

Try making the Layout Box Border's color Orange and make sure it is displayed in the ALDO and then just go page by page and see if you have an empty one ( or 2 ) delete any found and save the LO and close it, then re-open it and check again in the PB..... repeat till gone if needed....

    Yeah that should work...good idea

    Doug,

This tool is listed in the response Chris posted and it is the tool I use when looking for something in plan.  Maybe this is what you were thinking of?

    • Click on an item in the schedule.  "Find in Plan" tool is highlighted.
    • Click on the "Find in Plan" tool and your item is highlighted in the plan.

Ah Yes, Thank you Susan...that's it!  I new I wasn't going nuts.  Tonight perhaps I will get some sleep.  It's like you know one's name and cant' think of it till you've left the party.

    Thanks again,

  7. So for a few years I've been using the same layout,  As I make changes I save as layout and over-write the existing after removing client info and anything that is client specific.  Recently while In Project Browser I noticed a link to a plan file that's not associated with the current plan being worked on.  Is there a way to identify what in the layout is still linked to another plan file and if so, how do I break that link so when I re-save as a new template, open as default,  it's no longer listed.

    Thank you in advance.

Folder and file paths are found in the Preferences menu:

On the computer with the custom toolbars and preferences you want copied, find and copy those folders to the other computers.

You might want to keep the original folders in case something goes south, but this works for me.

Yup, that'll work. Oh yeah, always keep a copy of the originals.

  9.  I run Chief on three computers (one at a time), I find myself adding tools I use all the time and remove the ones I never or seldom use. Make changes to program defaults (not plan specific).  Is there a way to sink the three computers so each has the same tool bars and Program defaults etc., for instance, Preferences.  Currently I keep a list of changes I make and update those changes when switching from computer to computer. I'm aware of all the exporting item, Default Sets, layer sets, etc.,etc..

    Thanks much for any suggestions.

  10. Maybe I was dreaming or thinking of another CAD program I use. Don't we have the ability to locate something in plan, I.E. it highlights the object/item,  Perhaps a "find" tool? I'm not referring to when you select an item it shows what layer it's on.  Thanks

Thanks Dermot, I'm running the X15 Beta and wondering if there may be a few updates since installing.  I'll check out the links you supplied.

    Thank You again,

    Doug

Well apparently the new update took care of the above. Hummm, so far it did. Time will tell. Haven't seen the Blue wheel of Death since.

Uninstalling and reinstalling X15 should not cause you to lose any plans or settings that are on your computer.  More information about uninstalling can be found here:

Assuming that this does not solve your problems, I highly recommend this tech support article:

Do you Run Macrium Reflect Full Version by chance?  It is a known incompatibility for me , confirmed by both Chief and Macrium IF a Backup of C:\ Drive is run While Chief is open, Macrium stops Chief righting to Disk, which it does all the time for Undo Plans , AutoSaves, Archive Saves etc, for periods from 3 - 22 mins ( the longest I waited as a test ) .  Took me quite a long time to figure out what was causing the Chief Lockups , but now I know , If needed I pause the Macrium Backup and Chief is instantly working again.

    Mick.

Thanks Mick, but no I don't, but good to know.

  14. According to my IT persons,(builders of my computers)  X15 may be causing or X15 has a memory glitch. (i.e. the Blue Wheel of death) happening at any turn, 2D or 3D.    My video drivers (on 2 computers) are up to date and SSA had me try other driver options to no avail.  Still happening. The builders of my computers suggested reinstalling X15. If I were to do this (being I've already moved X14 projects up to X15). Naturally I don't want to loose anything. Libraries, defaults etc,., etc..  Should I attempt a remove and reinstall or just a re-install hoping for a repair option there by saving whatever it is I've already set up. I wright over so to speak.

Both computers are running minimum Intel 13 Gen Core i9 (13900KF) 24 core CPU,  GTX 4070Ti, 12GB or GTX 3090 24 GB EACH with 64GB DDR5 Memory.

BTW, no other Cad programs I run from AutoCAD 2023, Inventor, Pro E, etc.,etc. also all of Adobe Products...no issues. Only CA...

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  15. Yes he is sort of, sure the text style assigned to the layer, what ever is on it will use that text style. I could make a separate style just for joist direction call outs but I thought there was a way to change it on the fly. A one time thing just for fit purposes.  I could be thinking of one of my other many cad programs I use. Thanks

I'm constantly having that same problem of recall.  I think our brains are just full.

But this is a great plug for the SSA membership I pay for every year.  I will make at least 4 calls each week to CA support to help me remember what I've forgotten.

Makes it well worth the price as it keeps me from wasting an hour or more of my time trying to find the answer.

I hear you about the brain being full, How true that is. For me I think it's because I use so many different CAD programs for different disciplines, It take and while to realize I'm not using XYZ.  Funny you say you call CA, (SSA) regarding general questions. Since I've been using CA, since Ver 9, I think I've called less than a dozen times. A couple regarding bugs, but to ask a general questions on how to do something, I've been told several times it's not what SSA is for. After 2023, It may be my last time renewing. Don't like the direction these companies are going. I've been checking out Bricsys lately.   https://www.bricsys.com/en-us/bricscad-ultimate  As great as CA is, I can most certainly get by without upgrading just to make pretty pictures/renderings and just 2D for residential. Any who, tanks for the input. Have a Happy and safe New Year
