Just so you know, I didn't use a deck tool. Look at my post again. Using the deck tool will give you a different outcome.

Yes thanks. I recreated it and figured that part out.

One question, by adding the 2nd floor, when you create a stairwell the stairs are not visible on the 3rd floor. How does everyone get around this? CAD lines?

Here's something quick to make that look. Probably a different method from Eric. Made 3 floors. 2nd. floor balcony was defined as family to have same siding and made it a railing wall with railing removed. Glass railing is a railing wall with no room definition.

I hadn't thought of using the deck tools to achieve that. Good idea!

It wouldn't fully automate the framing model but it's part of the way there. There's more than one way to build this but having SOME of the framing generate without modelling each individual member is a big plus.

    Thanks!

  3. Hi All,

I have attached a photo of facade style which has become VERY common in Australia. In order to achieve the look I have been using polyline solids.

I was wondering if anyone has a means of achieving this type of model which would enable chief to generate the framing as well? Ideally I would like to be able to produce an accurate material take off.

  4. Has anyone been having issues with saving their user library to the cloud? Specifically Google Drive?

I've noticed some items won't sync b/w devices & I've also had textures go missing. The Cloud folder has additional files being created by Chief titled 'User_Library[Conflict]'

Would love to know why this is occurring.

  5. Hi Everyone,

Not sure if this is a function you use regularly however, it is something I make regular use of when working on my laptop to pan around my plans (when I need to use my trackpad)

On previous versions you could hold down CMD and left click to pan around the screen. X11 no longer has this function, and the custom hotkey tool won't allow me to re-create it..

    Has anyone else encountered this?

If possible, it would be great if the Dev. team could fix this via an update.

  6. Bummer. Thought I was going to save myself some work by making them a 3D object.

Will just copy them from the other plan files and paste them onto the site then.

Would be nice if Chief would make it work as a 3D model. Saves a lot of stuffing around with subdivision/unit developments. Always need to supply a shadow diagram.

    Thanks Michael.

  7. Hi Everyone,

Quick question. I have exported a 3DS model from chief to use as part of a Dual Occupancy. After importing the model into my site plan all looks good, however the 3DS model won't generate a shadow in plan view. Works fine in a 3D overview though... Any suggestions? I haven't been able to find anything in the help files.

  8. I don't think that you will find a pattern that adapts to the perimeter shape as per your pic.

Patterns are regularly repeating and as such are uniform in the area they fill.

There is the Insulation box, but you can't edit the enclosing box to other than a rectangle.

You could use the Spline tool to draw it manually.

Not a bad idea. Could CAD block it and add to library. Would only need a little bit of tweaking then.

  9. A closed polyline with a fill could show it. Do you want any fill pattern or something like the swirls on the picture?

I'm specifically wanting to recreate the 'zigzag' pattern shown in the cut area. There's nothing in the chief library that replicates it and I've hunted around on a few websites that have fill patterns but can't find what I want

  10. Hi all

Just wondering if anyone knows how to create the fill pattern used in the 'area of cut' shown in the attached plan.

I had a go in photoshop but had no success. It's a bit outside my area of expertise

    Thanks in advance!

  11. This looks impressive, but its actually not that hard to do.  I downloaded a free version of Unreal and was shocked how easy it was - very similar to Lumion, but with more options.  This is going to give me some pause next time I have to upgrade Lumion.

The only real issue I am seeing with Unreal is the product licensing.  They provide the app for free, but they want a piece of the "royalty".  Im curious how this works for architectural.

    Hi Johnny

My question is how do you export a 3D model from Chief to work on in the Unreal engine?

  12. After working on 5k I would not go back to any lower resolution and yes I will even struggle with Chiefs slowness hoping it will be fixed quickly. If you buy regular iMac (and in one year all pc's will have 4-5k screens) you will regret having "commodore 64" on your deck :) i think

Simonas I also use the 5K. I've found that turning off the cursor crosshairs made a difference. Still not perfect but at least I don't have to downscale the resolution anymore.

  13. Cross hair lag is potentially a problem with super high resolution displays. Using smaller windows can help. Unfortunately the rich feedback that we provide while you move the mouse pushes the computational capabilities of computers when the size of a window gets large enough. There are also other factors in play as well. Some people are much more sensitive to things like this than others. Also the refresh rate of the display can be an issue. I know that when we did tests internally of 4K displays on Windows some people reported a cross hair lag that others didn't notice. This was because of the 30 hz refresh rate.

A lot of this computation is done on the CPU so a faster video card may not help.

Unfortunately, the push toward higher DPI displays is happening a bit quicker than the hardware can really support. I think 4K displays are fine with most modern hardware but 5K displays probably need a bit more processor power. This may be where the Mac Pro would actually be a better choice.

That makes sense Doug. I had noticed that if I scaled down the resolution the lag would go away. But that defeated the purpose of having a 5k monitor... a larger workspace. I'll just have to live with out the crosshair

I've been finding it hard to believe that the video card could be at fault Bill, especially seeing as I use it heavily for photo & video editing without any slow down.

  14. I use the 5k mac. Works well enough. Only question I have for the chief team is if CA supports the high resolution? I've found that I had to turn the crosshair off as it was too laggy even with a fully up-spec'd mac.

  15. I've been using the default pdf print option that comes on Mac. Might have to try a different one (Any suggestions for Mac?).

Funnily enough it hasn't done it for a little while. I'll post up the error code if it happens again

  16. I've had quite a few critical error crashes printing layouts to PDF with X7. Has anyone else had this problem?

Doesn't happen all the time but has happened enough to peeve me off.

    Using Retina iMac top specs

  17. Hi Ian

I've been using chief on the Retina iMac since December.

Works fine as long as you scale down the resolution 1 stop. I found that the cursor was laggy when the resolution was high. Same for 3D overviews even with the up spec'd video card.

You'll love the Retina display for photography. It's amazing.
