You could create one straight panel then take a 3d shot of it.  Turn off all layers except for the panel.  Then convert it to a symbol and assign it as a window.  The next step is to make a curved wall and place the new "window" that is really just your panel.

To expand upon what Tom said...

For panels running perfectly horizontal, you can simply use a Wall Niche.  Just set the depth to something very shallow and use the casing as your wainscot molding.  No need to convert to a symbol.

For the panels with an angled bottom (those running up the side of the stairs) you'll need to do as Tom suggested but with some added steps... I would draw a copy of your curved wall in a blank plan, place the window(s) into that wall, use the Delete Surface tool to delete everything except your molding,  and then convert that to a symbol again, this time just as a regular fixture.  Now place that new symbol in your plan.

Sounds like using a wall may be better than what I tried but here is- made wainscott panel with angled top and bottom, converted to cabinet door and set stretch plane so it can't resize..

Placed in a bow front cabinet as side panel inset, fooled with origins, Hard part is working out radius of the cabinet  Then 3D view, delete surfaces and converted to a symbol.

I only went as far as making it a millwork symbol (the height on that could be resized, doubt any of the rest.  Wonder if making it a molding symbol might be an option.

Anyway, kept me amused for a little bit, maybe it helps, plan with stuff I used and symbol in it.

Thank you very much everybody! Always know that other chieftens are ready to help out whenever they can! I'm going to give it a try with the zip file, and see the results I can achieve, if it comes out the way I imagined it I'll post it for everybody to have a look, if it all goes wrong I'll be asking for some more help :)

So I found this helpful and useful video, absolutely loved it!

Only problem I've come across, is that in a new project of mine, I have a majestic staircase that curves with a semi-circular wall.  The problem I keep hitting is how to curved the cad lines in cross section view to achieve the same result that our friend here achieved but curved?

Jonboy I like the shot, simple and elegant.  I wanted to ask how did you achieve the natural light meaning how lit up the whole room is? ray-trace contrast settings or added lights or?  If you don't mind sharing the settings/lights you used, wanted to achieve something similar but been having a hard time, pre raytrace room is very lit but afterwards much darker and post ray-trace settings don't help achieve what it is I'm looking for.

    thanks ahead of time!

Here you go Limitless, it's still a bit of a beast for CA, but I started to lose geometry going any smaller using MooTools Polygon Cruncher.  I converted to skp out of MooTools, then ran CleanUp in SketchUp 2017.  I did not set texture UVs, so only single color textures will look good.

    Leather_Sofa_CL03__3darch.skp

Jcaffee thank you very much! gonna give ita  go and see how it looks, also still haven't had the time to download all those programs to crunch and see how it goes with other furniture pieces.  Thank you again!

limitless,  Have you tried to compress the file by zipping?  If that does not work I use Microsoft OneDrive  https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-ca/ and they still have 5 GB of free storage and file sharing.  There are also many other cloud services available.

    https://1drv.ms/f/s!Akh8cPutNBnRzhttViw30jk5Me1t

here is the link for the couch, if anybody can take a look and see what can be done I would be really grateful.  (Forgot I have 105gb of storage with onedrive)

  7. Chopsaw thanks for the link I'll definitely give it a try and let you know what came out of it!

Graham:  I also flipped it, what I wanted to ask if any recommendation on what cloud site to use to give you guys access to the couch and it's file?  because for example as said the object properties say it has one material when in reality it should be split up into frame, legs, main couch cushions etc, and how I could apply each given material?

  8. Thekitchenadobe:

Thank you for your quick response, Marcmc is right, it's the couch that's the problem and I couldn't upload it due to size, if you can be bothered to use the link I provided and download it and see what happens?

Also can you let me know when you imported which parameters did you change in advanced under interior fixture to make it stand right because I had issues having the object and it's box being one in the same etc, thanks!

Marcmc: I'll try looking for the program and IF i find it and make it work I'll let you know!

  9. Good Day/Evening all!!

So, I know we all love to use the 3dwarehouse from sketchup and it's great, but sometimes you just can't find what you're looking for, not to mention creating a custom piece of furniture isn't always something you have time for.

I ran into the following, found a website :

    https://3darch.org/3dmodel/contemporary-armchair-01-970 (example model)

    https://3darch.org/3dmodel/leather-sofa-cl03-979 (couch i wanted)

I downloaded a couch, imported, well first of all it only had one material, meaning the leather and feet didn't have separate material options, second of all it had like 329,000 faces (I know on the chief website it says the more faces the worse it gets)

My problem is once I imported and assigned a material to it, the couch was so amazing that in plain 3d view it looked like it had gone through ray trace all too well, BUT the system slowed the hell down like no other (I know faces).

So I guess have a few questions,

    1) Can I somehow modify these objects to have less faces and so they don't slow down the program to the point of URGHHH GRR?
    2) If I can't, does anybody else know of any other great websites that have good furniture databases that are easy to import and good in detail?

The brown couch comes out looking almost the same in 3d view. (couch is 48mb in size)

Thanks for any and all help ahead of time!

  10. So Chiefers good day/evening!

Wanted a quick tip from somebody, is there any way that I can make let's say the interior part of a door white, whilst the exterior is dark brown?  The point would be that if it's a door that separates the master bedroom and walk in closet, on the bedroom side it remains white with lites, while on the inside of the walk in, it would be brown?

I'm pretty sure I remember having done this ages ago but for the life of me can't seem to remember how...(for renderings changing the color on each side each time is an option I know, but wondering what is the actual solution?)

any and all tips will be appreciated!!

  11. So I after having gone through a few tutorials I decided to do a few a exterior ray traces of two different homes to see the results after all  material definitions were changed as well as lighting and so forth.  Here are the results, let me know your honest opinion everybody, thanks!

  12. Thanks to those who provided advice and encouragement the hard part is now finished.  Added some Polyline Solids and Solids to the mix of 3D Molding Polylines and got er done.

Fabulous work! Now we all know it's not doable but that there is an expert we can consult when it comes to these hard tasks ;)

  13. I looked at Ithil's designs, and my oh my impressive.  I wonder if it would be possible to achieve the same level renders in chief.  BTW from what I read, Ithil does the sketchup design, and another graphics designer renders the images for him.

  14. Hi, Glenn the problem is when drawing the panel in the top of the doorway arch you are forced to draw the curved part of the 3D Molding Polyline in an elevation view parallel with the wall that the doorway is in but then the straight parts are drawn in a separate elevation view perpendicular to the wall in the center of the doorway.  Then there seems to be no way to join the two 3D Molding Polylines such that you get the appearance of a proper miter in the corner.

It seems as though Greg had the same issue in Sketchup from what I see in his post with the vector illustration.  As the profile gets more detailed this becomes more of an issue.

Limitless,  I see now that I made a big mistake of doing my test plan in X8.  Most of the procedure has now been posted in this thread but if you run into difficulties I do have a copy of X7 and will try to help.  Just need to find a time when we are both awake and can Skype.  The weather is the same in Moscow today but you are 7 hours ahead of me.  Maybe your evening time would work.

Chopsaw, Just got in and I'm afraid today won't be able to skype, maybe saturday/sunday; or during the week next week.  Yeah Halloween came with some snow, which I'll take any day over shabby rain and clouds...

Hmm need to find this comrade of mine and take a look at his renderings and all.  one of my skypes is : limitless.trading@mail.ru

  15. I was messing around and made that in Sketchup real quick and imported as a symbol just to see how it will look, in CA a door opening will have to be made first and some adjustments will needed...

It was made in CA 7 version

Thank you so much Greg!  I guess I should download sketchup as well, seeing as it would be easier to create these custom symbols there and import them.  Thanks again!

  16. Thanks for the tips Joe,  Not polished but with a little more work and a Ray Trace it would pass I think.  If there is Molding Polyline jockey out there I would still like to know how to properly miter vertical and horizontal 3D Molding Polylines together.  What is the trick?

I see you managed to actually get it done, how??

  17. Wow, barely anytime went by, and so many replies.  Thank you everybody, I knew this wouldn't be easy in Chief or any other program for that matter; to try and put it inside the curve.

I agree, if one would find a way to do it once, then you will become a guru at it for life.  I'm a play around with a few variations and see what happens, who knows something might come out of it.

Worst case scenario, I'll refer to my fellow countrymen (the russian as you said) and see if him and I can come to some understanding.

    Thanks everybody again!

  18. Hey all!

So I'd like to ask for some advice/assistance from those pro's with more experience.  I am attaching two images to help explain what it is I am after for a client.

In essence, the client wants many arches instead of doors within the house, but inside the actual arch itself, he'd want to see wainscoting/molding (not sure which would be the more appropriate in this case)

Has anybody attempted to recreate such things, if so could you be please so kind and explain to me how it can be done?

Big thanks to everybody ahead of time

I know at chief all the pro's are a lot more friendly and cooperative than anywhere else!
