Create a dimension default that you will use to dimension only the construction lines. These dimensions should be on their own layer.

Then...create a REF SET (which you had already done) and the only layer on in this set should be the layer you created for these dimensions.

Examine the attached plan. If you go to the 2nd floor...you will see the referenced dimensions.

Thank you Steve for taking time out to look at this.

I'll have to study this further in the morning.

You could place those specific dimensions on a unique layer and the use a custom reference layer set to show them on other floors.

Steve, I tried what you suggested, but display of dimensions still is affected by floor level.  (I think I understand the concept -- draw everything I need for gridlines and their associated dimensions and then bring it into other floors as a Reference Display?)

  3. Good morning,

I've got floating dormers on my roof.  It appears with the roof hole, roof planes and walls showing.

Is there a way to get the plan representation to look graphically proper in plan without having to explode the dormer or add filled CAD linework over it?

I worked in the door business

    Gene,

Just curious -- have you ever had issues or needed to clarify with your door / window mfgs Chief's default sizing convention (e.g. 2670) or is it pretty clear to them what's meant?

The reason I ask is in my "ideal world" the inches would be underscored (e.g. 2670) but Chief does not do this out of the box.

    Thanks,

    Jim

the return on the right where it reduces into a normal 2x6 framed wall is gonna be funky.

That was the problem I was running into.  Doug's solution is working pretty well.  Although I'm getting double window shutters!

That said, I'd like to try Michael's suggestion to see if that works too.  I could see showing the air gap as a Cad block.

On deadline right now -- I'll circle back to this.

Once again, thanks for all help!

  6. Hello,

I'm trying to get two window openings to form at a deep double wall.

    In red below:

    image.thumb.png.890847910309d823a89db07155f6e55b.png

I previously defined the fat furred out wall that the windows sit in as one wall definition.  However, that created a wall cleanup issue as the wall turned the corner plan right near the 1'-0" dimension.

Soooo, I thought I'd be clever and try two separate walls, but cannot seem to get the double wall opening to work.

    Any tips would be appreciated.

    Thanks once again,

    Jim

  7. I took another approach with an interior wall hosting a modified window.

    image.thumb.png.f474812bdcd95965df3c29c0592d26b6.png

I created a skinny wall type with Insulation Air Gap as the sole material:

This wall then hosts a full-height fixed window with settings to tweaked to mimic a glass panel.  (I turned off casings, sill, sash, etc. and adjusted the frame width).

    Materials adjusted as required.

    Hello Again

Is there (there has to be, Chief is a CAD Drafting program) a dialog box or other way of accurately spacing porch posts, when none of the posts will be equally spaced apart?

    Thanks in advance,

    Lane

    Lane,

Funny, but I was dealing with this very same issue earlier today for a breezeway.  I believe the answer is no.

To my knowledge there are 2 two methods to control spacing:

    1) Turn off railing columns / balusters and place the posts separately / manually.

    2) Break the railings into separate lengths (break the rails and then flip the rail so it does not auto-heal back together).  You can then control the post interval spacing for each defined image.thumb.png.736065c6bc9d8af3698904874e10a409.pnglength.

Here's the breezeway I was working on today.  I broke the initial 4 railing runs into more segments to better control the spacing (A, B , etc.) and to make the spacing match on both sides.

  9. Good morning,

I'm doing some project housekeeping and noticed I have wall type "Siding 6" and wall type "Siding 6 - NEW."  Both are identical.

Is there an easy way to consolidate or "merge" these two wall types into one type besides going through each wall on by one?

    Thanks again,

  10. Good morning,

    image.thumb.png.229062d94b8d2861dd09ab888999f782.png

I have a tall double casement window (1) with a custom library brick sill (2).

I need to make the window taller (3) and drop the sill to the finish floor...

As soon as the sill goes below the floor plate, it disappears (4).  (Not entirely surprised by this behavior).

    image.thumb.png.8b3e01efed5807f7eb8e4dfdd49cd7ed.png

Wondering if there is a workaround to force the window sill to appear?  Or do I need to show this with, say, a 3D solid?

    Thanks again,

It's controlled by layers.  Turn on or off:

  12. I google "Class A ridge vent" and it appears there are a number of products out there:  Brandguard, Air Vent, etc.

Once again, I don't think you need the mesh at the ridge vent.  It's already built into the Vulcan vent and it keeps embers from entering the attic space.

My guess is the the ridge vent product would just need to be compatible with your Class A rated roof -- I'm assuming asphalt shingle.

So, I think you could make your detail work.
