  1. It seems to be a catch 22 - I can't seem to add a room without adding a floor but I don't want an additional floor.

If your stairs are located on the top numbered floor of the plan and you wish to build them up to an attic loft or storage room, you will need to create a new numbered floor level above the stairs and create a room there - not on the Attic floor.

  2. I have not figured it out yet.   When I went to the main floor in the diagram - above the stairwell I put in the basement leading to the main flloor, I put in a stairwell.   For some reason it started on the basement floor and lead to the main floor.

I manually edited the stair settings so it would go from the main floor to the attic, it put the stairwell at the right level (it appears) however when I click on automatically generate stairwell,

it says cannot find the floor above the stairs in which to place the stairwell.

  3. Hello,

I created a dedicated area for a stairwell to the basement and to the attic.   When I put in the basement one, there is no ceiling - there was one until I put this in and told it to i put in automatic stairwell.   That was so the stairwell would come through to the next floor and you could walk on it -what I didn't think about was it wouldn't create a sloped ceiling over it.

In case this is related, I plan on putting a stairwell over this stairwell to go to the attic.

  4. Hello,

I'll admit - I know squat about CA.  I am just playing with ideas at the moment for a house (I'm not an architect).   I'd like to let more light into the bathroom and thought about a raised ceiling in the bathroom so I could put in a  window over the shower.    I have zero idea on how to go about that.  I did manage to get a small gable put in but I'm not sure how to remove the standard ceiling in the bathroom.   Also if putting in a raised ceiling is just a bad idea let me know and I'll skip it.

    Thanks you.

  5. Thanks - I apologize if I'm not in the right place.

    I went to Edit

    Preferences

    Appearance

Selected the check for the status bar

and checked show screen redraw time and show coordinates and it is still not showing.

I'd love to learn how to set it back but if there is an easy way to set everything back to defaults that would be fine as well.   I went to toolbar customization, configureations and switch to default but that wasn't it.

  6. Hello,

On the bottom of CA, if I were to just drag the mouse over an area - showing a line but not actually creating a line - it  would display how long that line was.  This made it very easy for me to measure a distance without actually adding anything to the drawing.   Can you tell me how to add back that tool or toolbar or display status at the bottom of CA?

  7. The nice thing is that your answer is accessible now to someone else with the same question.   I haven't tried it because I had found a similar solution when you were writing your helpful response.   So other newbies like me can quickly do this same thing.    I've found myself going back to my old post 6 months later as I forgot how to do something.

I threw in some posts but people get the idea.

Use an invisible wall to define the area, then adjust the room specification DBX's as needed. Your blue line area will need the "roof over this room" checked, and the area outside will obviously need that unchecked.

    Thanks.

  9. Hello,

I'm using the auto roof generation tool.  I'd like to have a partially covered deck.   It is probably obvious but how do I designate a portion of my deck as a room so I can cover that section of the deck?    I've circled in blue the section I'd like to designate as a room.   I may be asking the wrong way to do it but I'd like to extend the roof over the area I've circled.

    Thank you.

  10. Hello,

I apologize for asking this again - I know I found the answer here before but can't find the bookmark for it.   I know I got a link for a site with objects that can work with CA (but I think they are also for something else).   I know I got a Honda Accord, an aeron chair and some other items but for the life of me I can't find that website.   It had tons of free downloads.

    Thanks.

  11. Sorry - hard to tell due to the lack of colors on the walls but the right hand wall is visible in the picture (your right hand from the point of view in the picture - as in if you were walking up the stairs your right hand would be on the side with the visible wall).   The left hand wall is invisible - I drew a line where you can see the stud instead of the wall and a circle that if I swing the camera around towards views into the kitchen instead of a wall.

Is reattaching the file a function of Chief or would you like me to upload my plan?

Either way - everyone has really helped me here and I really want to thank everyone.   I started with Chief for the sake of just seeing how many square feet I would need, not really worrying about if I would keep the layout.   Then as I got playing with it, I just started having fun.   I admit what I'm doing is like bringing someone who does glitter and macaroni "art" to an art exhibit compared to you guys but I'm having fun learning the very basics of this program and truly appreciate the help everyone is providing.

  12. Thanks - for some reason when I say cut off at roof for the 3 interior wallls surrounding my stairwell, 2 show up fine but the third is invisible.    I even tried deleting it and copying over the parallel wall but the same issue occurs.  The wall shows fine if I don't cut it off at the roof (so I don't have the large sheet rock partition below the kitchen floor in the stairwell to the basement.

I created a new wall, removed the stairwell and made the new wall a foot to the right so nothing is possibly touching it and it still disappears if you have roof cut at wall bottom.
