  1. the suggestion about just working under the 4x6 beams is a good thought. But it is a tiny place with short ceilings. and of course my clients are tall!
  2. They just had a new roof put on not long ago. I am going to submit with just adding 2" foam under the decking which certainly will not meet energy code. But here in Washington they don't always make me bring a remodel up to new construction energy codes. Just depends on the city I am working with.
  3. I made all the changes in the roof defaults. I don' t know why I didn't look there before. Silly me. But then Chief would only apply the changes if I told it to auto rebuild the roof and it would only do that if I allowed it to delete any manually drawn roof planes. Well this house is so custom I had to create the roof one plane at a time so I certainly would not allow it to delete all my roof planes! So I will just make the changes to each roof plane. I found the white tongue and groove roof layer material and set it to 1.5" thick as the bottom layer of the roof plane.
  4. thanks guys for all the help I will work with those suggestions. There is no insulation in the ceiling/roof structure at all. I am going to fir down between the beams with 2x3's at 24"oc which will make a space for adding lighting on the ceiling. they want to add about 28 LED ceiling lights. Then spray foam between the 2x3's with foam insulation 2' thick and cover it all with 1x6 T&G pine painted white. And then because the beams lose half their depth, we will make new beam wraps and have them all stained and finished a medium brown to contrast with the white ceiling. I don't necessary need to draw all that detail in 3d but I want to try. I will at least show it in a cross section for the building department to review.
  5. I am drawing plans to remodel a small country french home. the ceilings are all vaulted (about 4/12) , built with 4x6 beams at 48" OC. Then covered with tongue and groove 2x6 decking material. Possibly plywood above that and then composition shingles. I cannot find how to draw that in my plan (in X13). I have the building almost finished in X13 but I just drew it with conventional 2x6 framing members and drywall. I added pine t&g to the ceiling and added the beams already. But to get an accurate cross section I really need to get rid of those 2x6 joists and have the 2x6 T&G decking from beam to beam. thanks for the help.
  6. I have drawn the house in X13 and I created the material list to get quantities of flooring for that part of the bid. The whole house is only 1443 sq feet. It will be LVP everywhere except the entry and the master bathroom. When I generate the material list for the whole house, which is only one floor, it shows a quantity of 2854 lineal feet of 5" wide maple flooring. Is there a way to tell the program to calculate that flooring as square footage instead of lineal footage?
  7. I installed X13 last night and then this morning I watched the Chief video on all the new features while having one of my new plans open. Then as she taught about many of the new features I would flip over to my plan and try it out, so it imprints in my mind. No way to remember everything but I knew if I tried it, maybe I would remember more of them. Lots of nice new features I will use and I am really excited about the new version.
  8. Thanks Mike and DSHall and Eric and Larry. I appreciate more input. I've only been using Chief for about a year and a half, so definitely learning every time I open the program. I can't wait for X13 to be released. I know the public Beta is out but I am uncertain about using it yet. Maybe I will wait for the full release. I will study ref sets and Saved Plan views and continue to learn.
  9. That is what I needed. Display on floor below solved the problem. and I turned off all layers I did not want to see. thanks
  10. Thanks I will explore that also
  11. Yes I can turn off layers. But I cannot get all the roof planes to show up when i am in plot plan view which is locked to the first floor of the plan. Turning on the roof planes layer works and I can of course change the line style but it will not display both the first floor and second floor roofs.
  12. Well I thought I understood enough to do this but obviously not.
  13. I am having trouble with showing just the roof in the plot plan view. When I create the terrain perimeter as I start the plot plan, Chief puts the terrain on floor 1. But it is showing the interior and exterior walls on floor one. I have the plot plan layer set on. And if i turn on the roof plane layer, then only the first floor roof planes show up as a dotted line. there are sections of the house where the roof is only on floor one and some sections with the roof on floor 2. What I want is just to see the roof from above on the plot plan, the entire roof with all roof planes with a nice bold line. And I don't want to see any walls or interior features. What am I missing? thanks
  14. I built a new PC and I installed X12 on the new PC. I saved my whole data file from the old PC and I am wondering if there is a way to import all the libraries from the previous install to the new one without having to download them all from the website again? I actually have all the CALIBZ files in a downloads folder on the harddrive. Would it work to just drag them to the program while it is open. Or can I just copy all the files to a certain folder in the program folder in Windows File Explorer? thanks
  15. Chris thanks that makes sense. So the higher dpi is probably not a bad idea because if the client is looking at the pdf on their phone it might make it easier to see the whole image on a small screen. I was always hesitant to use the higher dpi because I thought the file size would be prohibitively huge. Now I know Appreciate the help
  16. I often export views as pdf for my clients to review as I design a project. Typically various 3d views of the kitchen, bath, or addition. When in the export pdf screen there is a drop down to select the resolution for the pdf. I just conducted a test because I wondered if the file size would get too large if I saved the views with a higher resolution. So I saved the same exact view at the default 600, then also 1200 and 4000. Then I looked to see the three pdf's and they all looked exactly the same. no change in clarity of the image or depth of color. So I check the file size and all three were just about the same 444KB. So am I misunderstanding something here, or is Chief just not saving the pdf at different resolutions regardless of what I select on the dropdown menu? thanks for the help. (I just cannot wait till Chief 13 is released!)
  17. Eric thanks that worked just perfect! I appreciate you always being there to help
  18. I am having trouble with inserting a client info macro in my layout template. I watched the tutorial and then created a text box with the macro for client name, address etc. It looks right and it is on sheet 0 of my layout template. But then I cannot find any way to get Chief to insert the actual client info for that file on each layout page. I gave the plan file all the client info under Tools/project information/client information. How does it populate that info to the macro? thanks guys
  19. Thanks for the help. I got the plans done and sent them off to the structural engineer for his review. I am spending a LOT of time with X12 and I learn something every time I use this program. And you guys are great, helping on the forum thanks Elliot
  20. I need a bit of help. I am working on the ceiling framing layer set and I have a layer called "Text- Ceiling Framing" and I want the text to all be on that layer. But every time I try to add text CA asks me if I want to turn on the Text layer. If I say no, it won't do my text. If I say yes it turns on all the text from that layer. I know I can do the layer painter to move all my text to the layer I want but isn't there I way to tell chief to work on a specific layer for text or cad or whatever? Like set the "active" layer? thanks Elliot Gesang Gesang Remodeling Graham Washington x12 on Windows 10
  21. rgardner thanks for that idea. I will explore that.
  22. Thanks for the quick response. It was the selecting all the cabinets that I was forgetting about. so easy. thanks And I tried selecting another cabinet and the icon was there. No idea why it didn't show up when I selected the sink base of the vanity. But the drawer base worked. thanks again
  23. I am trying to change all the cabinets in a plan after I have it finished. The doors style was a flat panel and then my client decided to do a shaker full overlay. I can do them one at a time. Or I can change the default cabinet settings and apply them one at a time to each cabinet. But I remember watching a video where he was able to make a change on one cabinet and then apply it with a click to all the rest of the cabinets in the plan. But I cannot find that video or figure it out. The material painter doesn't change the door styles , just colors and finishes. etc. Also in another video it showed how you can make a change to one cabinet and then click on the icon on the bottom bar to make it the default. But that icon is not there in my X12. Or am I missing something? I know I can open the defaults and set it there but changing one cabinet and then saving it as my default seems so much quicker. But I cannot figure that out. thanks Elliot Gesang Gesang Remodelling Graham Washington x12 on Windows 10
  24. Thanks I will look for a video or a discussion in the knowledge base about creating a new material. Elliot
