My family owns the Hennessy Building which was planned out of New York in 1895. I assume it was built over the next year or two given how things worked back then. It is at 130 N Main St, Butte, MT 59701. I do not know, but suspect that this rail station was built many years prior to the Hennessy as the Hennessy was the first steel building ever built in Butte, and if our archives are correct, the first "skyscraper" in the US. High rises are a different class. Skyscrapers where buildings over 5 stories. The Hennessy is 6 plus a basement. This was all due to one invention. I am sure you can guess what that was. Mark

I live in one of America's most historic towns and have been awarded a contract to remodel one of three buildings of an old train station into a restaurant, wine bar, tasting room and seasonal mercantile rental spaces. It is a grand project and I am delighted to have this treasure placed in my trust. There are elements of the exterior that we need to recreate in what is termed as "period sensitive". What this basically means is that we need to keep the outside of the building as historically relevant and possible. I have attached a few photographs of elements that are a challenge to me to recreate so that I can inquire with a manufacturer to make a more energy efficient replica of what once was. I have had this structure scanned with LiDAR techology and anyone interested can walk through the entire building, but I have asked the company that did this scan to keep it up through the weekend, understanding the file size. This is the link to the very large file to see this 3D scan of a spectacular building. Link to LiDAR of Train Station You will need to install Autodesk ReCap Pro from their website. They offer a free 30 day trial that then turns into ReCap which will still let you walk through any other images scanned with this technology. At the moment is the challenge of recreating the door component shown in the first photo. I believe I have the corbel created, but found it easier to do in Chief than SketchUp Pro. The windows that are like a single hung, but operate in a 3rds proportion remain a mystery as well as to how to represent in Chief. Any help is graciously accepted. It did not. thank you. Resolved. No idea how to correct my profile settings yet. On with Technical Support now. I place my version and computer specs in the About Me area. -
Balconies and Open to Below are Affecting My Roof?
KnotSquare replied to KnotSquare's topic in General Q & A
My system in my profile was corrected last week and shows correct until I send a message in the forum. In the About Me field my profile reads: Chief Architect Premier X13 Dell Precision XPS 8940 Intel Core i9-10900 CPU @ 2.80GHz 16.0GB RAM 64-bit Operating System, Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 -
C1.plan This is very curious. When I have created 'open to below' spaces and then defined areas as 'balconies' (especially) it changed my entire roof. Are balconies only intended as exterior spaces? If anyone takes a look at the attached model, change Balcony 1 to a definition of "Balcony" instead of "Hall" and it puts a hole in the middle of the house as if it were an open air atrium. Suggestions as to how to deal with this and proper room definitions are welcome. Thanks, Mark C1.plan

Cross Section differs from Perspective Framing Overview
KnotSquare replied to KnotSquare's topic in General Q & A
Almost perfect. The end truss does not become a drop truss even if I designate it as such and the outlookers did not reach back to the next truss. I can likely stretch the outlookers if I turn on that layer in plan view, but I do not know what to do about the drop truss. This should not affect my Materials List and the truss company will make the correction, just wondering if I am still missing something. Great solution Jason. Thank you for helping me recall where the build truss was located. -

Model upload. I need to write this tip in my OneNote files. Having a heck of a time finding this information again. I found it the first go around. Bell Garage w-o Splash Wall.plan -
Cross Section differs from Perspective Framing Overview

Digging the Vector View for framing. Great tip. I can go back to a previously saved version and do just what you demonstrated, but not on this model as I have deleted the entire roof and rebuilt it. I realize you are likely helping others, but if you have a moment, here are the settings I have and I do not know why I do not get trusses instead of 2x4 rafters. Model upload is failing. Will try right behind this. Bell Garage w-o Splash Wall.plan -
Cross Section differs from Perspective Framing Overview
KnotSquare replied to KnotSquare's topic in General Q & A
I selected the roof planes and opened them. It stated that the Top Plate was at 109 1/8". Not being able to change that to the known 121 1/8" I locked the Pitch and added 12" to another value and walla! Fixed. -

When I set this up I used Match Trusses, but I am having trouble locating that setting again. Where was that located? This is an easy rebuild of the entire project, but I am seeking knowledge for when I have to deal with situations such as this in my larger models. -

When I opened edit it was correct. It is not updating, at least in this thread. I hit Save again. I will see when I submit this reply. -

I updated my profile settings. Hopefully that will change once this thread is done. -
Cross Section differs from Perspective Framing Overview
KnotSquare replied to KnotSquare's topic in General Q & A
Makes perfect sense, but is there a REAL way to fix it correctly at this stage? It appears that only the gable wall is incorrect in this view. I ask as I am in the midst of (3) large projects that have rooms and wall heights that very throughout the design. I also have a project I have almost reached contract on that will not only have varying plate heights, but is to be designed to Passive House standards and the main section through the middle of the house is a true mortise and tenon timber frame. I am using Chief for the design work to produce a Material List, but create my construction documents in AutoCAD LT. Of course I use Chief to design with my clients to help them visualize the final product. -
Cross Section differs from Perspective Framing Overview
KnotSquare replied to KnotSquare's topic in General Q & A
Solver, Unsure if this is the answer. They were correct in the Perspective Framing Overview and when I manually raised them 12" and changed that siding criteria, I got the attached result. My Room Specifications appear correct. Is there a specific way I should have raised them? I prefer getting the settings correct verses manually changing anything. Mark -
Cross Section differs from Perspective Framing Overview
KnotSquare replied to KnotSquare's topic in General Q & A
Solver, I did the first step and thank you, I did not realize that the specifications below were set for each layer. This may save me in other situations as well. I just saw that you followed up and may answer why the profile still shows that the wall is dogeared. Mark -
Cross Section differs from Perspective Framing Overview

Richard, This is to be a 10' pre-cut stud build. Looking at 'sovler' next, but thank you. Mark -
This is a simple garage design where I had a stem wall that was above the slab. I moved down in the plan view to the slab level and redesigned it to have the stem stop at the top of the slab and rebuild my framing. Now the section view shows the bottom cord raised above the top plate like a collar-tie. It should be common trusses as the perspective framing overview correctly shows. I cannot determine the cause of the difference and fear it will affect my Material List. Ideas? Home Design Import into Surveyor's Terrain
KnotSquare replied to KnotSquare's topic in General Q & A
Joe, I did import the terrain into the X12 plan. I think that the issue is that the Terrain is in elevation above sea level. How do I change the entire model to reference sea level? What I see when I use either zoom symbol, is this: All terrain layers are checked as displayed. This happens with the perspective or orthographic camera. Thank you. Mark -
I have imported a dwg file from my surveyor and created terrain for a large, steep lot on a hillside in Montana. I have designed a house for my clients for this hillside and converted it to an exterior fixture and placed it on the lot. I would like to import the actual model onto the lot so that I can manipulate the front patio and add stairs from the upper deck around one corner to access the hillside. I can find no information about combining imported terrain and X12 models. Does anyone know if there are articles already written or YouTube videos that I just can't find or better, have some instruction on how to accomplish this? The gable roof I placed at the front of the home will not center within the room so that I can design architectural trusses accurately within. I drew a CAD line down the center, and if you zoom in, you will see that the ridge of the roof planes do not quite match up. I added interior walls between the Kitchen and Great Room just to verify that it was not the invisible wall causing this issue. I can't seem to solve the problem. Any suggestions?
