I ran into something similar while working on a Bar Furniture setup, and using slab cabinet fronts with applied moldings gave me the control I needed. I used polylines for shapes and converted them to 3D moldings to fake the panel details. Takes a little tweaking with the material settings, but it looks pretty close in camera views.
