I hijacked the bottom rail to make it a vertical 2x4 and moved it up and in to mount under the top rail.

I turned off the newel posts.

Looks great!  I am using X15 but don't seam to have any more options than I normally did in the railing dialog.  I think you may be using 1 1/2" newel posts spaced at 5 1/2" and extended down the thickness of the rim joist? How about the vertical 2x4 member under the top rail? A custom drawn top rail?

Anyone have a good way to create this railing?  It was a very common railing design in the 1980's and 90's.  2x6 flat top rail, 2x4 vertical under top rail, 2x2 balusters fastened to bottom of deck rim.  I only need to draw only with existing conditions, not new decks.  I have always struggled to find a good way to draw this and usually end up with just showing the top 2x6 rail, no vertical 2x4, and no balusters extended down below the floor level, just to the top of the decking.

I have lost the decking from the main deck.  It was there at one point and then it will not show.  I even have all layers on.  I can build a new deck (see the little deck next to the main one) that will show the decking correctly but still not right on the main deck.  I am not having any luck with problem solving this issue and this has happened before on other projects.  Anyone got any ideas?  Plan file is attached and thank you in advance.

Just wondering what other Mac users are using for their systems.  Looking to speed up my system.  I know Chief Architect has told me that it's best to use a pc with gaming cards in them.  I need to stay with a Mac because of other graphic things that I do (I also do photography).  I need to have the display of a Mac to show true colors.  Interested if anyone could share what they are using for Mac with Chief Architect and how they find it is performing while using Chief.  I currently have an iMac 27" 2017, with Radeon Pro 580 8GB, 64 GB 2400 MHz DDR4 memory.  Finding it quit slow even on medium size projects.  Maybe I need to just have a separate PC system for using Chief.

Thank you Steve Nester!  This seams to have taken care of the problem.  I just don't understand how this would ever have gotten changed in my template file because it's never been an issue for me before.

I did check the build foundation settings.  The only thing I found that may have influence was foundation wall defaults, platform intersections both set to automatic, and doesn't seam to change if set otherwise.  This is when the problem happens though, when adding the foundation.

I'm having trouble finding a setting to control how my exterior wall is placing itself to the sill plate vs. sitting on top of the subfloor.  Something changed on my template file that I use.  The floor system is inset from the exterior wall.  I've tried looking through both wall, floor and framing system settings and can't seam to find the correct setting.

You can use a separate layer set for your reference display that only displays the stairs from the other floor.  You should turn off "XOR drawing" and turn on "Details" to make sure they display the way you want them too, including the railing details.

 

If you take advantage of saved plan views, you can setup one showing the stairs as you want them for your construction documents and a separate one displaying walls from other floors that you can use for alignment and editing purposes.

Thanks everyone for your input.  There doesn't seam to be an easy answer without creating another problem.  I think Micheal may have the simplest idea in showing with cad lines and adjusting if needed if the stairs are moved.  You would think that the stairs dialog box would include a simple setting option to show stairs on floor above or floor below.

I know this is an option, but then the stairs don't show on the main level.

Tried this and it seamed to kinda work but will create problems with other things in 3D view, and in my case, the roof was creating a problem and I had to put a wall up against the house wall which created a double wall with my exterior door trim.

Thanks, watched the video but the video seams to address a remodeling situation where you want to show the existing plan vs. new plan.  I played around some with reference display, if I use reference display and only turn on the stairs, I don't get the railing to show up and then I can't use reference display again while working on the the plan to line up walls, etc. unless I then turn on all of those reference layers again.

This won't work because now the stairs don't show on the main level.

Wouldn't this be more of a temporary thing and also show all of the lower walls, etc?  I want just the stairs to show and be a permanent part of my final upper level floor plan.

Anyone know how to display an exterior main level stairs on the upper level?

This is exactly the problem.  After I turned on all layers and checked each of my 3 floors, I discovered a duplicate note schedule I must have placed on another floor when I was messing around to see how notes worked.  Thought for sure it was a formatting issue.   Thank you sir!

Also using notes from all floors but haven't gotten past the 1st floor yet.

Anyone know why I can't seam to change the label style of these notes?  I just want a basic single digit number like 1 and not the comma between.  I have searched everywhere and can't find where you format this.  I even have another plan file open where it works correctly and can not track it down.

I'm curious on how other users manage and update their main template drawing.  I have a really hard time trying to manage my main drawing template file that I use for each new project.  Whenever I do start a new project I use this file.  While I am working on a project, I am always making little changes here and there to the defaults, etc during the drawing process that I want the same way on future new projects.  I do not understand why Chief is not setup in a way that if you make a default change, etc. in one drawing, it is not a universal change that will be the same on all drawings you are currently working on (like program preferences is).  It is only changed on that one specific drawing file.  Bugs the crap out of me.  This would be fine if you were just working on one drawing at a time from start to finish.  But in reality, I usually have 12 projects going at different stages and it becomes impossible to get all the projects on the same settings.  The way I have been doing it is to make the change to the current drawing I am working on, then open my template file and make the same change to it.  It's time consuming.  I am out of luck with the current projects that I have already started, but at least my template file is changed.  Recommendations???  Thanks in advance.
