The word is Monolithic as in all one pour. We still call it that in this age.

I am experimenting drawing a Slab Foundation using "Slab". I need to figure out how to show the Brick Ledge aka Rebate. Can I draw a Poly-line on top of my Slab and do a "Rebate" or better, raising that area might be easier?

Do you think it would be easier to simply draw the Slab Foundation in 2D using CAD lines or should I draw it in 3D?

Tnx! I will need to watch that a few times. Garage Floors somewhat vary in their recess. If on a flat terrain the typical Garage drop is 1.5" (2x4 form board) then slopes 2" toward the door. If the drive terrain is much lower, then we will drop the Garage a little more. Rebates? I thought that was something I sent off for when I buy Ink Cartridges. I never heard of that. Then again "Broken Arch" threw me too when we always called them Eye Brow Arches. "Brick Ledges" is the lingo here in Texas and they are formed from a 2x6 (1 1/2" x 5 1/2"). In Oklahoma and western Texas, the 5 1/2" brick ledge is dropped below grade. I'm not sure but I think they do a dual pour where a spread footing serves also as the below grade brick ledge. Someday I will need to drive out there and watch them build up the forms on a slab.

I have sold House Plans in north Texas for over 30 years and I always thought everybody used the same terminology. Then came the Internet and now I sell house plans, literally all over the earth. I can fill a room with all these home builders and we'll see a fist fight break out on the proper way to build a house and what word to call different parts.

I apologize that my Front Porch wasn't the way I intended it to be. Porches as always been another stumbling block for me. I keep thinking there is a wall definition in there somewhere called "Porch Header" and have the option to build the slab 5 1/2" beyond the header to align with a brick wall nearby.

If anybody else can add to this I would most appreciate it.

My learning curve is starting to improve here. I am totally committed to be 100% CA in a couple of months. I do have a couple of related stumbling blocks and that has to do with drawing a Concrete Slab On Grade Foundation such as many builders in Texas and Oklahoma build. It seems this software was optimized for Basements and Crawl Space Foundations. People always ask why we don't have Basements in Texas and I tell them we just put them in the Attic.

Can somebody please lead me in how to properly set my defaults so when I click "Build Foundation", Walla! A Concrete Slab on Grade is automatically drawn? Or.... like in drawing roofs and doing dimensions, forego the automatic routine and draw a foundation manually using Slab Tools?

Attached is a work in progress (Zipped File) that I will be providing a Slab on Grade Foundation for. We send the plans to the Concrete Engineers for all the detailed stuff as required by local building requirements. All I need is a surface plan such as the one provided (S2750L-5-Foundation-Layout.PDF) drawn in Brand-X Software.

One more quick question. Yesterday I submitted a question and attached a .plan file of a Townhouse I am working on. There will be several interior units like this one and a couple of end units. Eventually I will assemble these into buildings of anywhere from 3 to 6 units each. The units are 22'-11" wide and will have a 1 inch air space between each unit for the City Required Fire Wall. The legal property lines are 23' apart so there will be 1/2" offset from the property line to the outside surface of the interior unit. I will mix and match units as per my investor desires to form different buildings.

Here's the question, how do you suppose I assemble the buildings? I plan on saving the units as unit1.plan then unit2.plan, etc.... On the Import Fly Out Menu I don't see a Chief Architect .plan selection. Do I make an Architectural Block of the entire unit and save it to my User Catalog? I would like to keep each unit as an individual plan so as things get going we can easily up date design ideas.

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I search the forum looking for the answer to this. I'm a fairly new Chief user and this is my first attempt to a plan with two floors. What am I forgetting to do so the brick appears between floors on the elevation. The same thing occurs on the back side too.

I just upgraded to X8 Beta. Windows 7 64 Pro.

I'm preparing a project backup so I can post a question here on the forum only the ZIP file is a whooping 13MB. I looked at some of the JPGs and many in the folder are not used in the plan. The template I used to start this plan was from an earlier plan I saved as a template and these images are from that earlier plan. (did that make sense?) I searched here on ChiefTalk and around the program itself and I didn't see anyway to purge unused images.

Johnny - You are right about that. This is like starting all over and I'm almost too old for that. I've been using that "Other App" for nearly 30 years and it's not right to teach an old dog new tricks.

Michael - I was able to get your suggested methods to work. It's just gonna require some repetitive practice to really get the hang of it.

Actually, Training Video #5480 was helpful in drawing a Plot Plan. I will watch others that came up with the search term Plot Plan.

Thank you Michael for your suggestions.  I will try those. How about offsetting from a curve? Say I have a property line that's on a 50' radius and I need an off setted arc 25' behind that which will make it a 75' radius and the two end points are radial to the original line?

I have the same question, sort of. When drawing a plot plan I need to show a line, either a building line, easement line, etc.. which is basically an offset from the property line. Say I have a 25' building line that is offset from the property line. Only one copy 25' away from the line I already have drawn. In AutoCAD, it's easy. Just select offset, enter the distance, select the line to offset and click on the side of that line where the new line will be. Walla Bing Walla Boom. How can I do that in Chief?

Under Default Settings, I can set the Default Floor Finish IE, Tile, Wood, Etc, for Kitchen/Bath/Utility Room. We use Wood Floors in the Kitchen and Tile in the Baths. I know I can manually set the floor material in each individual room under Room Specification > Structure > Floor Finish (K) but it would be nice to be able to set different defaults for these three areas. Is this any way possible?

The Viewer on the CA website is a great tool for my clients to use in doing 3D visualizations of a plan. Although you can not edit a plan in the Viewer, is there a way to "Lock" the plan making it "Read Only" and not editable if the client just happen to find somebody else with a full version of Chief?

Hello Everybody,

I've started my first full construction drawing in CA X7 and for the life of me, I can't figure how to resolve a few glitches.

This plan is drawn with the intent to to build on a concrete slab foundation as we commonly do in the south.

I have included screen shots in the post along with the plan backed up in a zip file.

First, there is an additional slab foundation ledge around the Garage area.

On the front porch there are these strange recesses in the concrete porch.

Protruding trough the wall on the front porch are these slab pieces.

On the rear roof slope is a strange slab protruding.

I know these are pretty easy for somebody who is a veteran Chief operator. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am a fast learner and I hope to be doing all of my plans in Chief very soon. In the past all I did was use CA to create models and if I had a glitch like these, I just fixed them in PS.
