  1. Eric,   thanks  That works .  I was just looking within the files and it was in the core catalog files and it was in there...and i was confused...until your help.  I feel stupid  but I must have hit it by mistake as I have never used the filtered command  on purpose..

    Thanks again for your help

You have an active filter named Filter. What are you filtering?

i am not sure what you are asking ?  Im not aware...  I just checked older version..X10 and realized I have the architectural folder in X10 core catalogs but not in x12..for some reason its missing?  I will investigate but is it simple to copy that folder from one version into another ?

Are they available in the Library Browser?

A screen capture or 2 would show us what you see.

You uninstalled X12, then installed X12?

Yes i see core catalogs in the browser . here is a screen shot of dbx option and you can see there is no > arrow beside core catalog.... and Yes I uninstalled and reinstalled it thinking it might fix it

  4. My core catalogs have now stopped being available when using the library from the dbx...so for instance I go to change an interior door( which goes in place as the default door) and go to pull up the libray from the DBX and core catalogs are listed but no arrow? beside the core catalog folder and I cant open and access them. I have to go see if I can find something from a manufacturer or custom catalog or bonus catalog.  Or if I have it on an old project I can copy it and paste it. same for cabinet doors etc that are accessed from the DBX.  I tried to removed x12 and download it again but its still happening.  Anyone elese run into this ?

Very nice and glad it worked for you.

Just wanted to add one thing to this post for anyone finding it that someone else mentioned regarding this behavior the other day in a post:

When you are building your model once the roof goes on, Chief will automatically add in the attic walls to fill the gaps between the ceiling and the roof planes.  They are OOB set to automatically build and as long as you have them turned on it will do it's own thing.  However if you change them by changing the individual setting, "painting" a new surface, or try to delete them they lose their auto behavior.    Now if you change your exterior layout or roof as you almost always do at this point then the attic wall will not move or rebuild properly.  If you then try to delete the "errant" attic wall it will automatically add in an invisible wall in it's place as the system thinks you don't want it to show there so it is filling in the gap with an invisible wall to still close the proverbial ceiling roof box...  You have to delete the invisible wall as well or you will get a weird remnant (like you saw in this case.) on the outside of the new attic wall.  If you delete the invisible wall after deleting the attic wall and there is no need for the attic wall with the current setup then it will not rebuild.

    Hope that description is helpful.

    Great looking model btw! :)

    THANKS FOR THE GREAT FEEDBACK

  6. Reading a lot of good things about the new Invidia RTX 3000 series as well. Its release got pushed back somewhat it seems but seen some reports of it coming out in aug / sept range. Supposed to be much faster.  https://www.techradar.com/news/rtx-3080

Maybe you could share the solution for anyone else that runs into the same type of problem ?

when I clicked on it there was like an invisible attic wall?  above the roof line in front of where the stud wall was showing through. Once I clicked on it the user grips were highlighted and I could simply delete it.  Not sure why the wall ever generated but I am less than an expert on rooflines

heres a few pictures of the project

You just need to reset the FTH which clears the list of flagged applications which will result in Chief running much faster.

Paste this command into a command prompt that is running as admin to reset the list:

    Rundll32.exe fthsvc.dll,FthSysprepSpecialize

    Thanks Brian,

I appreciate the help / advice.  I believe that is what my IT friend was saying. My only concern had been resetting it for all or if its possible to reset it just for Chief. Resetting all it says may allow other programs to possibly crash more. I usually only have any problem with Autocadd locking up but I have backups and can restart that pretty easily if and when it happens.. resetting it hopefully will be the answer. Thanks again

If you are getting the Fault Tolerant Heap(FTH) message then Chief will run very very slowly until you have reset the FTH.

Take a look at this article for help resolving the issue:

    https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-03114/message-windows-fault-tolerant-heap-fth-has-been-enabled-for-this-application.html

by resetting the FTH  do you mean turning it off for the chief application ? While not affecting other programs? I am getting this error and it takes 20 or so seconds to complete every damn command and is making Chief basically useless. I have read the article and it says shutting it off it says it can cause problems to turn it off. An IT friend of mine is saying same thing to me but mentioned resetting the parameters...so I am hoping that may be an answer ?

Perhaps use one plan for CDs ,  and use a Save As Version for Client presentations with all the plants and other stuff needed , so you don't need to "work" in it everyday.

many SU models are done by Students and tend to be very high polygon count , so keep an eye on that too and anything with alot of curves will slow Chief down too, an example of that was a Multi Family someone posted on the Forum with a similar issue , the solution was to swap out the 30+ round vanity sinks for rectangular ones.

I was having issues in X10 and X11 due to certain Windows 10 Updates , I un-installed them and did a repair install of Win10 with the latest .iso from Microsoft and all has been good the last two weeks...

    M.

Mick  When you refer to undoing windows updates  I assume you are referring to the locking up ?  I intend on checking with tech support soon but have yet to do so. Maybe they can give some insight. As I noted it hadn't always happened I seem to have notice it starting maybe 2-3 months ago. Im not an every day user and do my CDs in Autocadd. If I was doing cds I would most definitely do 2 different  models without all the extra stuff. I just cant get comfortable with Chief for CDs. I may try it on my own home in the next year as a test.  Thanks for the tip on windows

Yes SU models can be an issue- depends on surface count, some but less on textures. Recently I've noticed from working with plans posted on the forum that have lots of layersets and anno sets (I mean lots) that those are slower than others. PDF inserted into plans also make a difference. Multiple views open, renderings, just plain larger files all have an impact. I also notice that to close and reopen occasionally can help. That said...

Laptop versus desktop-the Sager laptop in my signature still holds it's own and I frequently work with- lots of windows open, files with lots of symbols, and multiple files open. I do keep everything as tidy as possible though.

The Sager is 8-1/2 lbs. When I travel with it (and I do) I take the power brick. I don't know the weight but eventually invested in a top end backpack for the whole shebang. It has a desktop CPU faster than what you have, my 980m has 8Gb memory (you don't list that but it matters), having two NVMe SSDS in Raid 0 appears to help with undo (benchmark is crazy on that), and the machine has excellent cooling. For heat it also lets me bump the fans to full throttle with a keyboard, something I do often just in case.

You can run a freeware program like HW Monitor to keep an eye on temps and component temps-I do when I know I'll be behaving badly. If you're machine doesn't have a way to bump the fan there is software out there for that but it gets tricky what machines they work with.

So if you are willing to haul the weight there are laptops that can keep up. I've recently been looking into my next machine. A change in workflow and the thought that I can run the Sager part time on the road for a few years got me to consider desktops. Configuring both hi-end laptops and hi-end desktops with very similar specs I was surprised to see how little the cost difference is. Zip if you include a decent keyboard and monitor (I'll need a new monitor so I can still have 3 and likely get a keyboard)

For me the choice starts to be simplicity of heat control and ability to upgrade. The Sager can be upgraded but it turns out it's not all that cost effective or practical. A desktop will be a bit better.

Thanks Mark,  I had a hunch the SU models were a bit larger as that's when I seem to notice the biggest slowdown. But I also tend to add a lot of plants on models as I use them for presentation with client not CD's. I have the 17" alienware so I can relate to size and weight...That's never been my issue as its no big deal to carry in bag. Heat hasn't seemed bad either..I am only frustrated by the slowing of the program on these projects.

As a model's complexity grows and many times with plants, especially 3D plants and some furniture with many surfaces Chief can/will slow down even with a very fast system. You can throw money at the issue by buying the fastest desk top you can afford but keep your speed improvement expectations low as Chief just plain slows down with larger models. There are a couple tricks like closing your 3D views while working on your plan but I have a couple plans that takes 2 - 5 seconds between commands and I upgraded to the fastest Xeons available for my (admittedly aging) system and the fastest video card available at the time with zero improvement in speed. It's probably a basic computer architecture issue here but again don't expect blazing speed on larger models.

Beyond frustrating but if your models get large and you have a lot of complex symbols and/or plants Chief will slow down and the only fix is to drop some cash on the fastest system you can afford.

I have seen some videos of folks look like they are working real time with systems that seem to pretty fast but tread carefully, do a lot of research before you pull the trigger on a newer system. Lots of threads regarding same here on the forum.

Thanks Larry, I was afraid that was the issue with plants etc and models. I usually do most of that after the main house is done to reduce lag time.  just wasn't sure if I was unusual with this problem or if having 32GB vs 16GB of Ram was a dramatic imrovement as the program gets more complex.

  13. Ok I have an  Alienware 17, Intel I7  2.6 GHz, 16GB ram, GeForce GTX980M Video card. Its a gaming laptop and I bought it assuming it would more than handle Chief. Its fine when I first start a project but when model gets landscaping and some furniture  etc  every command takes 2-5 seconds then same for model regeneration etc. This has become very frustrating. Also having lately an issue with plan locking up after closing camera views. Started a few months back in X10 and I thought X11 would fix it but seeing same issue ( also noted in another thread someone else is having same issue). Many of the models I use are imported from 3D warehouse. Are these models more of an issue slowing computer than those in Chief's library?

I know a desktop usually gives you more computing power for the money than a laptop but is there any benefits to a desktop vs laptop? Am I unusual with this speed issue? I assume heat issue might be better with desktop since its not as compact / tight. Not sure if its simply a RAM issue ?

I did just upgrade the GeForce driver as I saw some other suggest making sure its current on another thread.  Just debating whether to buy desktop and get more ram etc would be a better fit and use laptop more for presentations / meetings etc

    Thoughts?  Thanks for any imput

I wish I could come up with a better title, but it is a weird problem.

First off, CA X11, Windows 10, Intel i7-855U, 8GB RAM, GeForce 940MX w/ 4GB and yes I did tell NVIDIA to use it's card for CA.

Ok, onto the problem. in all my plans, from X10 and including new ones started in X11, after looking at a camera view, and closing it, when I select an item (wall, joist, anything) it does not gray out as selected and the section boxes that usually show up at the bottom of the window are not there. Weirdly it works if I do not close that camera view. I can double click on the object and it opens the new window for that object, but nothing else happens as it should.

I have included 2 images so you can see the difference.

    After.png

    Before.png

I am having similar / same issue.  I also have issues with material selections locking up after closing.  It seems to have started a few months ago for me in VS X10. I thought it might have been an X10 issue but having same in X11 it seems.

  15. I have been having some similar issues with x10 of it locking up. It happens for me when I close aa camera view...it wont allow me to open a second plan or extra camera views and I have to close and reopen. It also  locks up when selecting materials if I try to open folders of materials it wont work unless I use the folders and select it from the folders not an open group of materials etc  hard to describe. Just started about 6 weeks ago so not sure whats wrong...likely to upgrade soon so hoping not an issue then

Here is a video I made about multiple appliances in a single cabinet, but it sounds like you already understand that.

Thanks for this video...I was ignorant of how to stack these appliances as they kept screwing up..duhhhhh   so much simpler

If you move the wall on the left side of the stair over 3" (on both levels), the roof will be there.

Tom,  Thank you...That did work...  Agghhhh  All the hassle over that ?  I got a little better at manually editing roof lines in the mean time so there is that!  Appreciate your time and help

  18. 5 minutes ago, solver said:

This is a simple roof to do manual. I would not upgrade just for this one project, unless you just want to.

X11 is still beta so if you want X12 too, I'd wait a few months.

Good Point.  I'm not an every day user so I'm not as used to doing manual roofs but in this case that seems to be working and  shouldn't ultimately be  complex roof( I hope). I might hold off that way on X11 a bit longer.  Thanks again to everyone
