  1. When I open a model made in 2012 on older laptop on new laptop in X12 or X13 the artwork in picture frames or on a tv etc does not come through and it shows blank.

Is there a way to make that artwork all transfer with the plan? I notice Cultured stone the manufacturer changed stuff up and they dont transfer either  but thats a manufacturer / new owner change I believe. Thanks for any insight

Thanks! That sounds typical of my experience - if I'm asked to replicate it, the program works perfectly, but the second I want it to cooperate, the error is constant. It leaves the program functional, but extremely frustrating and challenging to accomplish work. It works moderately more reliably when on the laptop screen only, and not connecting to additional monitors.

I have submitted the requested logs and files for two different computers that experienced this issue, so hopefully we all can all reach a solution soon.

second monitor seems to be worse for me as well

Not working on a Laptop ( make sure you don't have overheating issues ) but do have a 3080 and have found since the last release that the

crashes seem to be all in older plans started in X12 , and usually in a 3D Camera , eg trying to use Mouse Orbit to rotate the Model.

    Mick.

Thats my issue  older plans trying to use in 13.  For now I only open older files in x12 until they hopefully find a fix

Yes sir! Placing my order for the R12 32 gig rtx 3080 tonight or tomorrow. Tax write off. Can anyone suggest what is better? Gaming monitor or 4k for what we do in chief?

Got mine about 2 months ago... really sweet...only thing i dont love is the keyboard without specific numbers pad... but minor

  5. I recently bought and am so far very happy with...

    Alienware X17 R1 Laptop

    Intel i7  4.6 GHz  &

    32GB ram, NVIDEA RTX 3080

seems to run the PBR ray trace pretty well .  it doesnt have a numbers pad due to fans required to cool it so keyboard take a bit of getting used to but not a big issue

I keep X8 for opening of the old file type pl1 etc ( prior to .plan type). I open it in x8 save as then open in latest x13.

Otherwise remove all of them, depends on what you need. Just remember the old file types wont open in anything newer than X8.

Thanks.  I dont have x8 still on mine. X10  is oldest.  I havent had need for anything older in a few years as far as I can think of so hopefully it wont be an issue for me.  Appreciate the feedback

  7. Looking at my hard drive I am beginning to run out of space especially if I want to download x13 on my older laptop.

As I started looking into what I can delete I see I have X10, X11 and X12  all on the list of installed programs and in  the program data files I have large Program data files for X8 through X12 with Just under 80 GB taken up by program data files for X8-X11.    Is there any reason to not uninstall  X10 and X11 and delete the Program data files from X8-X11 ?  I am assuming all needed data was transferrred into the next version as new versions came out but wanted to be sure Im not missing something.. I'm still using X12 and will for a bit until plans started in 12 are finished  and I have a chance to explore 13.

    Thanks for any help

  8. I set up most all drawings on 24"x36" and send those out to be printed but my office oversized printer/ photo printer will print up to 13"x19" so when I print on 12"x18" sheets for check sets they are printed at 1/8" scale.  Its much better than having prints not to scale.  Its just 12x18 is not a paper you find  in stores  much so I order online.  Heres a a link . https://www.officesupply.com/office-supplies/paper-pads/printer-paper/wide-format-paper/hammermill-copy-paper-brightness-photo-white-sheets-ream/p60910.html?q=12 x 18 copy paper

We are finding the simplest way is to do a zoom call and share the screen.  I can then walk through the model on my computer one on one with the clients....

Thanks,  Thats also another way I can use... great minds!

Ideally when uploading a model, it should have max. 500,000 surfaces and a max. texture file size of 50MB. This can be difficult to achieve for many projects.

    https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-03068/viewing-managing-and-sharing-3d-viewer-models.html

Thanks, I will keep in mind.  he seems to have figured it out. he was clicking on the link  each time and it was trying to download each time.  he signed up and saved the model to his acount and now can open it up when he wants.

  11. So I tried using or having a client download and use the 3d viewer for the first time.  I uploaded his project model and in general it uploaded ok.. took a while. It did have 5-7 issues of materials / textures not uploading or compatible etc as it loaded.. mostly referred to items ( i assume models ) from earlier versions like 8 or 9.  Sent him the link and he had downloaded the viewer on his android phone.

The first time he tried it the model worked and he said it was  a pretty good look and didnt notice textures missing as far as he could tell.  He said it took up 5-6 gb of ram on his phone( 12 gb)  but it worked pretty well.

Today when he tried opening it again ( using same link)  it gets stuck on obtaining the model.  Anyone have this happen ? any thoughts ?  did it download to his phone and he need to open it through file and not go back to the link ?    He downloaded  the viewer on some higher end stuff at his work and could get sample models to work but not my upload. He put it on a desk top and gets an out of memory error .  Any thoughts ?

  14. Hi,

I am currently doing construction documents in autocadd with some projects done in chief for visual/ design purposes for about half my clients.  I am not personally comfortable with doing the CD's in Chief but would like to start trying to migrate some plans/ CD's to chief.  I am looking to see who might be out there to take plans/ model that I have done in chief and complete construction documents as I currently dont have time to get up to speed on this phase on chief.  I would provide the design / model and engineering / layouts/ sizing as well as I would add in my general notes etc to final plans.  I would be looking for the following mostly standard requirements for New Homes. I would also share a sample of my projects to show level of detail etc I am typically providing.

Some corrections or editing of plans may be required to correct some of my lack of chief skills with things like stairs, etc. I can generally get the model to look correct but might be a shortcut to get the look withought hassle of getting chief to do it the correct way.

    1. Foundation Plan/ First Floor Framing

    1A. Sometimes finish basement plan

    2. First  and Second Floor plans as required ( sometimes second floor framing plans)

    3. Elevations

    4. Roof Plan

    5. Roof Framing Plan

    6. Typ walls sections at garage, 1 story, 2 story etc

    7. Optional door and window schedules (but these are no a big concern.)

    8. Electric plans ( optional)  I can do these if required as well or just edit ones you might start out.

Site plans may be required on some but many are done by civil engineers for many projects

So while I dont have any ready this minute; if you would be interested in such an arrangement, feel free to reach out to me and we can discuss your experience, fees, timing for doing a project.

    Thanks

Thanks for the tip Ryan!  I never get into modifying cabinetry to the level of shelving, so I've never used that tool.  Now that I know about this aspect I'll be using it instead of p-solids when it suits.

ME TOO. GLAD MY IGNORANCE HELPED A FEW PEOPLE GAIN MORE KNOWLEDGE :)

You know what else will apply the wood grain correctly is the Shelf tool.  Also a lot faster when building a shelf.

GREAT TIP I WILL TRY THAT. I HAVENT USED THAT TOOL BEFORE.. I FEEL DUMB THAT I NEVER CAME ACROSSED THAT SIMPLE TOOL AND YES IT WORKED GREAT

One can also use a general framing member for this application. Framing members wrap wood grain correctly automatically. Adjust schedule controls as needed and same with layers and labels.

Thanks Rob,  I will look into that.

  19. Solver. Thanks  I first tried using convert to plain polyline as thats all I could find to use and it simply disappeared.  I then found the solid tools icon that I have never used before. So it works but as I am sure you are aware it then makes it more of a pain to copy or move around later if needed. It does the trick if one doesnt want to mess around with them much after exploding..  Would be nice if we could specify it to go all through the solid object.  Thanks again.

  20. When putting wood shelves / polyline solid in a design I can use wood material and rotate the grain direction to run the length of a shelf as needed  by rotating the texture in materials... but the grain on the edge of the shelf runs vertical. Is there a way to make the grain go through the entire object  so the grain is realistic on the edge ?
