Construction Documents Checklist
DakotaContractor replied to DakotaContractor's topic in General Q & A
I guess I'll have to start working on figuring out what details I actually need then I suppose and making sure I have them or making sure I obtain them. I am primarily trying to make sure that I don't have necessary things left out for the sake of my subs or when submitting for permits to the zoning office. I'm not sure how much leeway I have on the level of detail in my construction documents since my plans are only for me to build. Any chance any of you knowledgeable gents would be willing to glance over a PDF of the plans to see if I'm missing anything crucial? It's only 9 pages.- 38 replies

Construction Documents Checklist
DakotaContractor replied to DakotaContractor's topic in General Q & A
In watching that video again Perry I almost feel like I'm getting myself in over my head lol. While I know how to read most of the details I saw you had scattered throughout the template.Drawing them on the other hand is another story all together.- 38 replies

Michael that was BRILLIANT! Thank you so much. That will make quick work of creating those details and make them far better looking than my sloppy "by hand" details. -

Construction Documents Checklist
DakotaContractor replied to DakotaContractor's topic in General Q & A
That is an excellent idea Perry. If I understand you correctly. I can create a "layout template" so when I start drawing a plan the layout will already have all the pages and "views" and be auto updating as I start designing? If so that would be such a time saver. Now I just need to make sure I have all the necessary pages in the initial template. This is my first time having to create construction documents. I've always been the guy having to read them, never the guy have to create them lol. So i'm trying to run through my head to figure out everything I would look for as the guy trying to build it.- 38 replies

AHA! I couldn't find the specific place you screen shot Alan, with the red + signs etc. But it got me exploring further into buttons I'd never even clicked or noticed before LOL. I clicked Layer Set Control by way of the little gear icon at the bottom of the Active Layer Display Options. Scrolled down to Walls, Foundation, box checked, and TADA! Thanks guys! Now to get closer to the representation I attached in my OP do I just hide the interior walls and outside foundation wall so they don't show in the cross section?

Does anyone have a checklist or a link to one for construction documents that should be in a set of standard residential blueprints? I realize some are situational, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything. I'd rather create too much than not create enough. Is it possible for someone to open a layout file without the plan? If that would help answer my question. Just let me know and I'll attach it or a PDF of it. So far I have: 1. Cover Page (w/ Sheet index, Project Details, Building Area, Project Area (with Satellite Photo) 2. Front & Rear Elevations - w/ vertical & horizontal dimensions. 3. Right & Left Side Elevations - w/ vertical & horizontal dimensions. 4. Floor Plan Overview - w/Exterior Dimensions, Room Designations (w/dimensions), Light Fixture Locations, etc.) 5. Foundation Plan - w/dimensions & special designations for non-standard foundation walls (No cross sections) 6. Framing Overview - w/interior dimensions, exterior dimensions, and wall type designations w/ wall type cross section details. 7. Exterior Framing Elevations - w/dimensions, door & window schedules. 8. Cabinet Schedule - w/cabinet details (elevation views) 9. Electrical - light, outlet, and switch locations. Etc. Thanks guys!

Michael are you referring to this? If so they are on. If this isn't what you're referring to then I'm lost as to what layer set you're referencing

Is This Possible? - Auto Cad Wall Details
DakotaContractor replied to DakotaContractor's topic in General Q & A
That would be fantastic. Thanks Michael help is massively appreciated. Still trying to get through this first set of prints and hoping to get it down to a science since I need to do it 9 more times for 9 more floor plans after this one *facepalm*. Next time I'm telling the client to go see an architect lol. -
Is This Possible? - Auto Cad Wall Details
DakotaContractor replied to DakotaContractor's topic in General Q & A
I tried the method you were describing Michael but couldn't get the wall drawn off to the side to show up in cross section/elevation or back-flipped. Attached a view of what I've been trying to create, painfully slow and not as neat as I'd like doing it by hand. Does the method you were describing Michael get me to this type of "detail" for the walls drawn off to the side? If so, what step am I missing? -
Is This Possible? - Auto Cad Wall Details
DakotaContractor replied to DakotaContractor's topic in General Q & A
A wall schedule or legend aye. Where the walls are marked as what type on the plan and then there are details in the plans for each wall type. This was pretty standard in the plans when I was doing commercial construction. This being my first set of plans, not sure if it's overkill for residential. The way you are describing to do it sounds like the most logical and easy way if there isn't a "Create Detail" button hidden somewhere in the "wall type" tab lol. -
I am trying to create a CAD cross section of the structure for the plan drawings. I was able to locate the how-to article in the knowledge base of how to supposedly do this, however, when I do a "backflipped cross section I get a blank screen even with every layer turned on. And when I do a regular cross section my foundation and footings don't show up (even with layer turned on). Attached an example of what I'm essentially trying to create (courtesy of CA's knowledge base). As well as the closest I've gotten my cross-section view to appear to, which also shows the footing/foundation issue I'm describing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

1. Is it possible to have CA create an auto CAD detail of a wall type? Or am I stuck drawing each and every wall type piece by piece?

Same I had to manually edit the roof planes. Will let you know on a side note however that a few of your built in cabinets in the top right of the master closet are taller than your ceiling is in that room.

How To/walkthrough For Stainless Steel
DakotaContractor replied to DakotaContractor's topic in General Q & A
That is probably the best looking SS inside Chief that I've seen to date Justin. Did you use the default SS chief materials in that render? Do you already have an associated bump for it that you're using?- 9 replies

Ray Trace & Sliding Glass Doors Shown Open
DakotaContractor replied to blackhawkdesign's topic in General Q & A
Have you noticed anything glaringly obvious in the dbx for each camera, interior vs. exterior that could be the culprit? Because it certainly is behaving correctly from the exterior view. I'm hoping this doesn't have to be another thing chalked up to "well that's just how CA is for now" >< Can you attach a copy of that sample box plan that you are rendering from? I'd love to poke around in it and see if I have the same problem. -
*phew* Lets hope there isn't a forced upgrade. I can handle them stopping support.

Ray Trace & Sliding Glass Doors Shown Open
DakotaContractor replied to blackhawkdesign's topic in General Q & A
Was able to recreate it. Turn off Photon Mapping. Attached slider with Photon Mapping on and with it off. No distortion/speckling with it off. Sadly haven't been able to recreate the full black slab problem. -
HAHA, no it's a 126 acre development that we're building out east of town. Combination of townhomes, single family homes and commercial buildings. So that 1500+ number is just the accumulative hours of all the client approved residential designs being offered to the end buyers as well as all the initial conceptual platting designs. And of course ALLLL the revisions and tweaks and changes that go along with the aforementioned lol. =)

Ray Trace & Sliding Glass Doors Shown Open
DakotaContractor replied to blackhawkdesign's topic in General Q & A
Blackhawk I'm not able to see any of the pixelation or distortion that you are talking about in the image you attached. So i'm not sure what you're referring to there. I tried to recreate the problem that TKA displayed (the black box) in their attached render by stacking a bunch of windows in front of one another, but I wasn't able to recreate the problem. (attached the quick render I did). Would either of you be able to attach a copy of your plan so I can try to fix and/or recreate the problem you're having?
