  1. There are several ways  to do trey ceiling, Chief suggest 3 part approach:

    - Create a platform hole(1), platform sides - molding polyline(2), ceiling plane (3) to cover the hole.

      See https://www.chiefarchitect.com/support/article/KB-00738/creating-a-trey-or-coffered-ceiling-using-the-platform-hole-tool.html

-Alternative would be to raise the ceiling platform (e.g. 12") and use soffit tool along the perimeter. If you assign a molding (cown) to a room, chief auto apply if to a soffit.

    -Joe suggestion is good too.

If you intent to use Trusses I would be using (1)

  2. Thank you,

    >Only way I know of is to type it in MS Word and copy and paste to chief rich text.

100% correct. Also it is weird that Chief RichText does not support sub and super script.

    >There are some superscript characters in the Chief Macros.  You can also use the Alt_Key combinations.

Chief RichText blocks ALT-Key. One of the first things I tried Alt + 0179 = Super 3.

  3. To improve draw times in this plan, try turning off the living area label through the plan defaults dialog. You can also get a decent speed up by removing the concrete wall fill.

Please report all performance issues through the Online Support Center: https://support.chiefarchitect.com.

It appears that  living area label  is been constantly recomputed, when no changes no wall changes.

What I also noticed is that the rendering time does not depends on the viewport size. Most software will not consider rendering/computing a group of polygons [not just per polygon test but for a large group] if there is no chance of them been displayed. So for 420' x 420' plan should be divided by metagrid 20x20, when section 13-14vert 16-20horiz are displayed no reason to render any groups or consider any large groups in 1-10 vert 1-14 horiz.

  4. Why can't stairs have two additional check marks - knee wall on the left, knee wall on the right. If any options selected generate rails till the end of the wall or till wall break. Permit specifying molding over rake wall.

  5. I would make a suggestion to CA to add knee wall staircases.... They are used by nearly every single track builder. And the amount of time spent to make them look similar is ridiculous. In the end of this stairs are the wrong size: 37.5 vs 33 due to inclusion of the wall.

  6. :D with a 3' side yard setback, if so, you have 5' left, Not even a legal room size, plant a garden

Most likely that would be 8' with 3' setback on each side.... So house would have to be 2' wide - minus a 4 1/2"  for each wall  (in case he forgo better insulated 6 1/2" walls) would leave ppl with 1'-3" or 11" respectively for the interior width. Could also be hard to find 9" wide front door. Thinking of that coffin, is wider than that (avg coffin is 28" wide).

LOL Are you sure that your lot is 8' and not 8 meters (26.2 feet)?

  7. >I just spent the afternoon screwing around with this.  It's not possible to get good results.

    Why?

Export rxl, import it into rescheck. All your walls should be listed. Adjust R settings as needed.

    >We don't have the ability to input roof R-Values, so I'm assuming I have to use a ceiling or floor.

Where exactly you can NOT enter R value? At least with Rescheck 4.6.2  any R value can be overwritten.

     >I would like to fill those attic rooms with R-48

Select your ceiling, click on Cavity insulation R value - enter 48

WHat is the issue? If you don't like Row that it generated: right click - delete, hit ceiling add manually your ceiling plane.

Or if you Need Heat/Cool Load

    1) Download & Install HeatCad (30 day free trial)

    2) Use CA export ALL Floors as DWG

    3) Open HeatCad create new project, set defaults

    4) Main floor

    5) Import DWG and turn off all layers but level_1

    6) quickly trace project, place windows

    7) adjust North Directing thingy

    8) generate report.

  8. Thank you ALL very much.

    > As a builder, ask yourself how you provide for a boxed eave in a perfect corner where the valleys meet.(?)

    I am NOT a builder.

    >You need to re-design the roof to provide for the proper roof returns.

I have seen roofs like that with a partial returns... And David is correct they are using additional roof planes.

Should I cantilever front by 6" over the porch assuming front gable 3 1/2 truss?

  9. Thank you, I've learned new awesome trick.

I was trying to box the return on the front of the house, not on the side, to match the front double gable planes.
