Thanks Gene, that woulda saved me a lot of time earlier... worked great for aligning the planes. Alas, the second plane is still 2x6... I think that'll have to do for now. -

It was set at 9.25 before I built it- went back and confirmed. Exaggerated to 36in, and all that did was elevate the 2x6 roof above the original roof by 3 ft. -
Me again! Sorry to be such a squeaky wheel.. I'm trying to model one roof plane over another, using the z-axis as suggested here to raise the second over the first. This is a whole house rebuild, a second rafter layer is being used to add insulation. Second rafter layer will match the first in depth: 9.25in. Chief models the second rafter layer as 5.5in, same as the overhangs, despite defining this dimension prior to drawing the plane. When I exaggerate it, to 36in for example, Chief moves the new rafter plane up the z-axis by that number and maintains the 5.5in rafter.

I did look at the toggle- wasn't an option, was grayed out. When I looked at the framing view, framing was only showing for the original square before I entered the actual structure dimensions. I rebuilt the framing, which then matched the structure, and I was able to click on the room (house was only one room at that point). I do not understand why the happened/ is happening, auto everything is on.

Ugh, was hoping that'd do the trick! Went through the process of building the wall assembly one layer at a time. Turning on the "furred wall" option turns off the roof and makes the room inaccessible- which is very odd, I used this option on a different version of a plan earlier today.

When I edit exterior wall defaults and draw a basic square structure, I can't highlight the room and the roof does not build. When I delete the structure, and revert to standard siding-6, I still can't highlight the room and a roof won't build. Yet, when I launch Chief, without adjusting wall defaults, the software performs as it should. Edit: reset to defaults. Did not work. I have 2021 HD Pro- built same assembly on that platform without issue.

Ugh. Didn't quite do the trick- when I adjust the wall type to "furred wall," Chief drives the top plates up into the rafters. Why is the plate height changing?

Changing to a "furred wall" under structure/ double wall option did the trick. Alas, the inside corners aren't building properly, and what was Chief thinking the the aforementioned problem to begin with? If the layers aren't staggered, why does the wall need to be defined as a furred wall? Best to manually draw the corners?

Something went awry, setting are correct. Centers make no sense.

Does the trick, nearly! I plugged in different values until the bottom of the rafters aligned with the top plates. But, I assume, the accurate value is the difference in plumb cuts between the two rafter dimensions? Framing and elevation camera views attached. The elevation and framing views don't agree. Two issues: elevation view isn't repopulating to reflect framing; elevation view shows proper rafter tails while framing view does not. -

Yes... edited. I haven't tried the Z plane as that would involve moving the roof structure and adjusting all of the walls, correct? I was hoping to lock the plate somehow. -
Back again! Going to be a habit, working on a Passive House retrofit. Half of a 1986 saltbox will be converted to a clerestory with tji rafters, the other half will get a second set of 2x10 rafters overlaying the existing. When I split the roof planes between clerestory and saltbox, and change the clerestory rafters to 18in tji rafters, Chief drops the top plates. How do I keep the plates at a constant height? The roof overlay on the second half of the roof will match the height.

Sweet, thanks! Why does Chief assume staggered layers? Is there a setting anywhere for this? Learning.

A Bonfiglioli wall is a built-out stick framed wall using foam rippers and a nail base over the face of each stud, plates, and headers, to minimize bridging and create more room for cavity insulation. The only way I've been able to get close is to define the ripped layers as fir framing and change the color and pattern of the middle layer to resemble XPS. The layers offset, however, and I can't figure out how to align. Screen shot attached.

OK! Got it, mostly. Would be so nice to control this in layers- and adjust centers and orientation. Seems like the software mod would be simple. I can see all of the edges and edge detailing getting quite finicky. Good thread you linked. Per that thread, is there a way to turn trim off on the base plane trim and extend the exterior wall finish up? Flushing the tails with the outside wall does not seem to do the trick. The interior wall finish will obviously terminate at the top of the plate.

Jorge- that's how I landed here to begin with! Chief will not allow multiple roof framing layers. It is possible to add a framing layer to the roof finishes, under the shingles, for example. I tried that, too. Shingles, plywood, fir framing, plywood. Chief morphs that framing layer into the actual framing layer, no plywood between, and generates one fat rafter- that's what I see in a framing view. In a cross section or full overview, the roof system appears to be floating by the height of the rafter.

Thanks Joey! I had to adjust the height at the outside wall by the thickness of the rafter in order to get the ceiling to generate at the same pitch as the roof.While that works to an extent, as far as I can tell, ceiling joists are generated that follow the roof pitch, but they don't bear on the exterior walls. They die into the studs. Problems at the ridge too, as this is the structural layer. The over-roof is strictly for insulation- the ceiling plane will need to rest on the plates.

Learning curve is so slow for me... ugh. I'm design/ build and do quite a few whole house rebuilds where I add a non-bearing roof over the existing to increase insulation values. I have one such project on the horizon, a saltbox will be converted to a clerestory, and non bearing roof built over the sections of the current that remain. Chief will not let me add a rafter layer, like a double stud wall, for example. The new rafter layer will comprise the overhangs, the existing overhangs will be cut flush with the wall framing. Thoughts?
