Describe your manual adjustments to framing, and point out how Chief built it wrong.

To my knowledge, Chief doesn't offer built-in span calcs for joists and rafters.  Even the headers (that fall into standard tables) are hit and miss based on my settings.  Beyond that, Chief still doesn't get that you need different material for, plates for instance.  Chief also doesn't know what a patio header is.  And trying to organize the material list so that it works is pretty much impossible from my experience.  So, why even bother including something if you're not going to make it work?  I suppose the visuals can help avoid framing conflicts, etc.

Do you really want the liability of a possible miscalculation?

The material list is only as accurate as the model so you must be very precise in what you show.  If I was a builder or contractor I might use the material list - but as an Architect (or even as a general contractor) I let subs & suppliers do their own takeoffs.

I offer estimating services, as well.  And as an architect, there's no reason the model shouldn't be accurate.  That's why I'm looking at alternatives to Chief all around.  Tired of the auto- generated nonsense.

If you download TwinMotion you’ll have a much easier time sharing detailed models with your clients with their TwinMotion Cloud service.
It’s all free and easy to use.
Very quick to upload your models and quick and easy for your client or anyone to view.

It’s worth the time to learn this very user friendly software if only for this sort of thing. The interface is a little quirky and off putting only because it’s not familiar but it doesn’t take long to get use to.

Chief is the quickest path from idea to 3D Model and construction documents, hands down but it needs a little help for sharing work with clients and that’s where TM comes in.
TM is also the place to create videos and a static renderings of your work.
I usually send a complete model including furniture and cabinets and I only add grass, trees and shrubs, vehicles and people in TM, so there’s not a lot to do.

In your case where you’re worried about a lot of surfaces I would export as Collada and not 3DS. Collada is quicker and more compact. I’ve exported entire site plans with 98 condos across 8 buildings into TM and then shared it on TM Cloud and clients are able to view the model which takes about 1 to 2 minutes to load which is pretty quick for a file of that size. Keep in mind the multiplex buildings were full models in Chief that were converted to symbols but have all the cabinetry and furniture in every single condo.

Hey, that's great.  Thanks for the tip!  Will definitely check it out.

Yeah this is almost always the cause of this sort of bloat. It's not a Chief problem per se, you're just overloading the renderer.

    - The BOSS sign alone has 113,588 surfaces, a lot, but not too bad.

    - The "ova-sconce fixed" lights though have 261,590 surfaces.

       Each.

       There are 13.

    - But the biggest issue, hands down, are the FIVE "acuminate 2" hanging fixtures, each pushing 1,851,392 surfaces.

All of these objects alone renders 12,771,218 surfaces

For comparison, the rest of the model is only 61,078.

Deleting these fixtures takes your plan from 237mb down to 9mb.

As Chopsaw said, there are limitations to what Chief can render - the big issue is finding very detailed, well modeled objects, and then loading your plan with them. Those objects will look great in small contained scenes, but Chief renders the whole of everything.

Either try to find less detailed models, or live with them being a huge drain, and manage them with layers etc as outlined in that article.

    Good luck!

Thank you.  The whole point of the project was to model the fixtures (had them made).  Guess we'll just have to stick with the ray trace static images.

Well, what's your secret?  When I change the settings for the other window it goes berserk and changes the rest of the house to the same (on the one you sent back).  Still shows the foundation.  Is there a default setting that applies one room structure to all?

Managed to get it close to accurate by deleting the foundation walls under it.  But how does this make sense?  Ahh, the joys of Chief.  Thanks for your help!

I modified bay window #4. Take a look at what I did. The brickledge created by the wall type is still not perfect...but, you will see how I got the floor etc put together.

I've only tried the front left (4), but they all need to be changed.  Number 3 goes to the ground but that whole thing is going away.  Number 1 is the box feature in Chief, which is great if you only have one window.

  8. I haven't changed any settings/defaults but when I change the floor height in one room (box window) it changes all of them.  It's never done that before.  I've toggled all options.  I checked the last plan I did with a boxed window and the settings are the same.

Anyone use another program that doesn't think it's God?  Just let me control each input.  I don't need you to automatically change other values because I change one.  Rant over.

    Thanks,

  9. I've tried changing every default I can find.  It's never been this large before.

Also don't know why the file is so large.  No PDFs that I'm aware of.

Aaand, the text in the framing plan views keeps defaulting to "Text" as opposed to "Text Framing" which is what it's set on.

    Thanks!

  10. Hey Y'all,

I'm guessing the missing wall sections are just another Chief glitch, but who knows.

Then there's some kind of trim on the bottom of some sections of the ceiling.  I'm hoping that's something I can turn off, but haven't been able to find it.

And, does anyone know how or if we can customize railing to have more rails (like a typical modern railing)?  Haven't searched posts on this yet.

    Thanks!BOSS.plan

I've rarely seen a fixture I couldn't model in Sketchup in ten minutes or less.  Import as "electrical," check "advanced," do all the material things, add the lights, edit positions, light specs, set origin, check which way it mounts (wall, ceiling) set origin, . . .

Make sure the model is done with all its parts in different colors so you can easily ID which is which when setting materials in Chief.

Yeah, I haven't learned Sketchup.  Thinking about going to Vectorworks.

Won't they add the light data? If not, then yes you can. Import the symbol as 'electrical'. Select 'Show Advanced Options', go to Options tab and check Light.

Thank you, sir.  I guess they might.  I've never had it done before.

  13. Hey Y'all,

In browsing other posts, I think I can do this, but wanted to see if anyone could confirm.  I'm having someone model a couple of fixtures I need to add to a render.  They will provide a 3d symbol file.  When I import them, will I be able to label it a fixture and add a lighting material to the bulbs so that it emits light in the render?

    Thanks!
