thanks I had thought to do a 3d solid as a last resort unless someone had more of an automatic suggestions. I thought if I specified it as an "end truss" and Chief saw that it was open, it would put siding on it. I appreciate the response.

I am having trouble figuring out how to put siding and trim on a truss. I made it an end truss and an attic truss. CA put the vertical studs but how do I add siding and trim to this. I need a 1x6 along the plane of the lower roof and hardi between. Also how do I put a soffit plywood on the overhang cantilever trusses above the porch? thanks Elliot

Adding a foundation under a 1 story addition on 2 story house
Elliot posted a topic in General Q & A
I am working in CA16. I finished drawing a 1 story house with a full basement. I set the foundation defaults as 8" concrete stemwall 96" tall with footing and a 4" slab for a floor. It worked fine on the house. Then I drew a single story addition on the rear of the house for a master suite. But it did not draw a foundation. How do I get chief to draw the correct foundation just under the new addition totally different from the rest of the house. This area needs to be 24" stemwall with footing and no slab. thanks folks!! -
thanks I will study that. Everything you said goes over my head. So I will study and learn....

I imported a 12x24 Portobellow Portofino Mist from the mfg website but it only had an image of just one tile. Not an image of several in a pattern. So I captured it, created a new material and edited it in the materials. In the screen showing the edit options it lets me designate it as 12x24 and I select "Grid Offset" but in the little 3d cube showing what it will look like it just shows it as a grid with no offset. then when I paint it, it shows the same grid with no offset. I cannot get it to do the offset grid at all. I can change angle, size, and offset amount in the dialog box but in 3d cube it stays as a grid. What am I doing wrong?

Here is the plan. The hardi is fine on the exterior and shows drywall on the interior in other parts of the house. But in the master bathroom and bedroom, it shows hardi on the interior. thank for the help. Gustafson remodel.plan

I am working in X16 but I had the same problem in X15. I draw a house, with Exterior-6 walls for exterior walls. Interior 4 and Interior 6 for interior walls. I have hardi siding assigned as the cladding of the exterior 6 walls and drywall for interior side. But CA keeps putting the hardi on BOTH sides of the wall. Now its putting hardi on both side of the interior 4 walls. I don't know it until I look at a 3d or wall elevation. I checked my defaults for walls and they show drywall on the interior of the exterior walls and drywall on both sides of an interior wall. In the past the only way to fix it was to delete the wall and create a new wall but I am hitting my frustration limit over this now. Please tell me I am doing something wrong and not that CA has a serious glitch.

Roof overhang showing inside the house in the 3d image

I have most of a house plan finished but I have a problem with a roof overhang. In the 3d of the second floor family or media room, it shows the overhang and fascia. Most of room is a scissor truss but the area on the back is flat and the overhang shows through the ceiling. I inserted an interior wall where the scissor ends and made it invisible. I cannot figure out how to change that truss hanging down into the room. thanks guys I tried to attach the CA file but it says the max would be 14mb and the file size is 15.3mb so I have inserted a pic of the 3d below

glennw Yes that is what I mean. But I still have to open every single folder, one at a time....

I wonder if there is a way to view all the library 3d images like 36 or 100 pics on a page or something like that. Like looking at all your pics in your gallery. I was looking for a particular type of chandelier but opening every folder in the library, expanding each one to see if it is what my client wants is very time consuming and often unfruitful. And I have looked at 3d Warehouse and registered but I am afraid to download a file from some random stranger. Is there a word for "fear of computer virus"? How do you know? And what file type works with CA15?

Drawzilla Thanks you just made my day. I have never even looked at that wall type or room definition and locate. I will remember that, I hope... Elliot

I am having trouble creating a second floor over a garage. I drew the whole house and I saved the file as the "before remodel". then I saved the file as a remodel and starting making changes. The house was a 2 story with a one story attached garage on the left side. they want to turn that garage into living space and add a media room above. So I recreated the garage into living space and called it "kitchen" . I tried to just have CA add a second floor above but because there was already a second floor it would not do that. So I just extended the 2nd floor walls over the new kitchen area but it will not recognize it as a room. And it does not put a floor in the room. and when I try to do "auto build roof" It does the roof on the second floor but it puts the roof on the lower first floor walls of the kitchen and ignores the new walls in added above for the media room. What am I missing or doing wrong? thanks cortes 4302 N. Orchard remodel plans 2nd floor.pdf

I design a lot of remodels in which the client wants a linear gas fireplace. I have all the libraries about fireplaces but nothing is even close. Is there a manufacturer library catalog I am not seeing? Sometimes I need logs and sometimes I need the glass beads and LED lighting. Can anyone direct me to this or share with me how to create it? thanks

I am struggling with plan views and layer sets. In the plan I am working on now, I created two views. A ceiling framing view and a floor framing view. For each one I created a layer set and assigned the layer set to the corresponding view. So the Ceiling framing view gets assigned the Ceiling layer set and so on. And for each layer set I create layers which would be very specific to just that view. For the Ceiling view I have Text - ceiling framing, and for Cad I have CAD - ceiling framing , and same for dimensions. So those items show up only on that view. I have watched the videos and I think I am doing all correctly. But I am in the Floor Framing View and the layer set is the Floor Layer Set with the Text - floor framing turned on. But I start to place text in that view and CA asks me if i want to turn on the Text- Ceiling Framing layer. I don't understand how the layer sets coordinate or are affected by what I set in the defaults/setting. I thought the selected layer set overrides whatever is in the defaults. Is there a setting to make it ignore the defaults and just use whatever I have set in the layer set. Why is it doing that and what am I doing wrong? thanks

ShCanada2 I figured out what you were saying and that fixed the problem. I was always going to the definition of the wall type and it would not work. But when i did like you showed me, selecting the materials item on the menu, it was really easy to change and it worked. All fixed thanks everyone for all your suggestions.

Glennw. I did a complete plan backup and tried to attach it to this post. but it would not because the complete zip file is larger than 14mb whcih is the limit. Any other way to do this? thanks Elliot

Guys I am still having ser Serious problems with this. I place an interior wall and sometimes one side of the wall will have exterior siding on it. When I check the wall definitions, it doesn't say anything about exterior siding. But in the 3D images, it shows a exterior signing. It's not even the sighting I set as default, which is a lap siding like Hardy. What is showing up in the 3D images is a cedar shingle, which is the default for the program. Somebody please help me. I really need to know how to fix this.. perhaps I should call the SAS service on Monday.

I just started a new drawing. Simple rectangular house with 4 exterior walls and a couple of interior walls. I started drawing the kitchen and when I did my first 3d view of the cabinet walls it showed exterior siding on one of the exterior walls and both of the interior walls. I checked the wall definition of the exterior wall and it shows Exterior 6 like it is supposed to but it shows exterior shingle siding on both sides of the wall inthe 3d. In the details of the wall definition is shows siding on the exterior and drywall on the interior. For the interior wall it shows Interior4. The 3d has exterior siding on both sides. But in the wall definition panel it shows drywall on both sides. Is this a glitch? Or am I doing something wrong? thanks

Thanks I got it figured out. Ready to print, save as pdf and submit for permits.

Guys I read through a lot of this thread, hoping to find my solution. It is related to this font size issue. I have my whole drawing plan file complete and I created the layout file. I sent all my views to layout and everything looks great except the size of the dimensions. In the plan view, all the dimensions and text look great. Nicely proportionate and spaced well. But on the layout, the text all looks great and the dimensions are all quite tiny. Can hardly see them. I am in X15 and I don't believe this every happened to me before. I am sure it is just some small setting in defaults but I cannot find it! And para-CAD I appreciate you sharing your cheat sheet with us. I printed it, and will use it and think of you!
