Your numbers generally look good, but you are taking a hit on larger file read and writes.  That's the 4K block test on the bottom.  Are you using Win10 disk compression - that would slow you down.

I don't think I am using any compression program.

What version are you on? (Please add to your signature.) How large is the actual file? Chief has always had a point where a plan gets too large and you need to start finding ways to simplify 3D representations, like replacing fancy balusters with square ones, getting rid of exploded fills, etc., although models can be much larger now than in the past. You may find that X9 will help enormously with speed, since that is something they've been working on.  A five minute undo would drive me nuts. Another thing to look at are the number of CAD items you've got. CAD intensive files used to be very, very slow, and you might need to move these items to a separate file. This improved in X7 or X8.

Sorry for not sharing that.  I have X8.  The file is 147MB.  Most of the plan is empty as far as rooms go, just have walls, flooring, etc.  The 120 room lodge has furnished kids clubs, lobby, decks, one hotel room is furnished, and a bar.  It is 144,109 SF in total.  There are two sets of stair cases, over 120 windows, etc.  Certainly would be much more furnished in real life but I understand it wouldn't make sense to do that in Chief.  Any idea when X9 comes out?  Thank you for your time!

Yep a very large plan will do it. You may just have to live with it for this one.. You can turn off things until you are ready to print, like large amounts of molding and round railings

Thanks for the advice.  I am mainly using Chief to import the building into Lumion.  I have no speed issues on that software but it just takes forever to make the building changes in Chief before importing and takes several hours to export to a DAE file.  Thanks again.

Yes, I did not read your post carefully.  You might install CrystalMark software and measure your drive performance.  I'd be interested to see what sort of numbers you are getting on each drive.

Thanks for the program tip.  I have attached screenshots of both hard drives.  The first picture, the one to the left, is the 1TB new drive Chief is installed on.  The second one contains the OS system.  Hope I ran the test right.

A larger drive might not help, but an SSD drive certainly will.  SSD are 10-20 times faster than a spinning drive.  I use a small 256MB Samsung 960 EVO M.2 drive for my operating system and then dual SSD drives in a Windows Storage System.  Easy to configure, lighting fast, and redundant.

Thanks for the message.  I moved the program to my SSD 1tb Samsung when I recently purchased the SSD.  Hasn't seemed to make a difference yet.  My operating system is still on the original, 256GB drive.

  6. Hello,

My Chief Architect program is very slow on large plans. I have no issue on small plans. I thought upgrading my ram to 64gb and installing a 1tb hard drive would help but it has not. The Chief Architect program was installed on the main PC SSD and was slow. I installed a 1TB SSD in addition to the original 256 GB SSD. The speed of the program has not changed since moving it over or the RAM upgrades. The PC I have was custom built by a company. I personally am not that knowledgable about hardware but I know it's a pretty great PC. Not yet a year old.

It often takes over three to five minutes to undo an action or save files on the large plan. Any ideas? My friend suggested changing the paging file speed but I am unsure how to do this or if it will make a difference. Would the slowness be a limitation of the program or my computer? I have attached screenshots of my computer specs. I wrote to tech support and they said the plan is just too large.  I always assumed slowness is due to my computer and couldn't be a limitation of the software.  Is that incorrect?  I can upload a link to the plan if desired but it is quite large.

    Thank you for your help!!

    Shane,

For starters, your floor/ceiling settings on the 2nd and 3rd floor elevators appear to be incorrect.

They should probably changed to Default - I assume that would be correct.

This is the main cause of the auto roof problems.

Change those settings and you will see a huge difference.

There is still an error message saying "Cannot Produce a Roof Plane" which I don't have time to troubleshoot now as I am off to bed.

If I get time in the morning, I will have another look.

This is doing pretty much what Mark was doing in his post - I just narrowed it down to the floor/ceiling settings in the elevators.

Thank you so much!  This worked.

  8. Hello,

I am working on creating a lodge.  I have auto roofs on and it has been working great.  I added a new, small area for elevators on all three floors.  Now on a random, unchanged area, I keep getting error messages about roof ridges.  I have never seen these errors before and now the roof looks insane and is all over the terrain.  I can't locate the tool mentioned in the error message either.  I have attached the file zipped and in a dropbox link due to its size.  The area it is circling is on the right side of the plan on the third floor.  I would highly appreciate any advice.

  9. Call tech support on Monday during normal business hours.

This kind of problem is normally very specific to a computer system.  It's highly unlikely that anyone can help you on this forum.  Tech support will usually try all of the most common things first but will have to dig deeper in some cases.

    Thanks for the info.

  10. Thanks for the message.  I have a MAC and PC.  I have had no issues on the PC, only the MAC.  On the MAC, I have Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB for graphics and not NVIDIA.  I have NVIDIA on my PC though.  I haven't made an security updates.  I have been having this issue for about two weeks.  Thanks

Yes you are running 15G1004, but did you update your NVIDIA WEB DRIVER, or at least what version are you running?

The error appears in ::setupAngleAndBumpingRestrictions list deallocator reports corruption. Did it just started? Or you had the same errors prior to the Security Update?

  11. I dont have a problem dragging any walls. How are you trying to move them?

    May be an apple thing??

I have tried moving the walls with clicking and dragging them.  I also have tried to move them with my keyboard arrows and the same thing happens.

  12. Hello,

I have the newest version of Chief Architect.  Most of the time when I try to move walls on my plan, the program crashes and opens up to the crash report screen.  It appears to happen when I use my arrow keys to move the wall and less frequently when I click with my mouse to move walls.  There is no freezing of the program.  It just crashes instantly upon moving any wall.  I have a MAC with all the updates and it meets all requirements.  I emailed support and they sent me a link of things to check and said they can't tell me anything from the error report.  I have attached the file in question and also attached a pdf of the error report text.  Any ideas?

    Thank you!

  13. Yes, report this to tech support on Monday.

Basically, the program is crashing but recovering (that is what the error message means).  It may be the result of a system problem or something that you are doing that is not common but either way we would like to know about it.  You should always report these types of problems to tech support so that we can make changes to the program to prevent this from happening in the future.  Also, tech support can usually find a solution for you to avoid this problem for now.

    Thank you!

  14. Try it AFTER you have turned off "Auto Rebuild Roofs". I have never had a crash when doing the same thing you are doing so you must be doing it in a way that crashes the software. Start by turning off Auto Roofs and then try again. You should then use the "Edit Area All Floors" to do as you wish, I would not recommend "marquee select" in the case of multiple floors.n

There is probably nothing wrong with your software, the problem is resident in the method and manner you chose to use.

Thanks for the advice.  I appreciate your support.

I turned off the auto roofs and pasted the copied room.  I stayed on the screen for a few seconds longer than it did but then still crashed the program.  I forgot to attach the file in the post.  The plan is currently just a hotel suite that I would like to copy multiple times to turn into a small inn.  I would appreciate any advice.

I also attached a PDF file of the text contained within the error report generated by the MAC computer that appears once the program crashes.

    Thank you!

  15. I have a suite I am hoping to copy and duplicate multiple times in my plan.  Every time I try to paste the room after being copied, the program crashes.

The most recent time it crashed an error message appeared first and I have it pasted below.  I have a MAC OS X EL CAPITAN.

  16. David,

Thank you so much for your time and video.  I truly appreciate your support.  The video was amazing and I apologize for such a delayed reply.  Thanks again.

I spent some time looking over your plan while videoing what I did and why. I hope this helps you because most of the design decisions need to be made by you and not me:

  17. I just upgraded to Chief Architect 8 from version 7.  The sunlight is driving me crazy because it makes half my plan dark and the other half light when in 3D.  I have used the sunlight tool that follows the camera and that is better but I wondered if there is a option to just have equal sunlight throughout the plan like I did in version 7.  I attached a picture of the sun settings and what the plan looks like.  The color of the walls I chose looks much brighter in the selection panel.  Thank you for your advice!

  18. Hello,

I have a log home I am creating.  I am having trouble with the roof.  The sides, where I am assuming an attic wall should go, has holes.  In addition, the only way I can seem to not have a roof covering furnishings in the upstairs rooms is to put a skylight in the ceiling.  Could anyone take a look at the plan and possibly provide any advice or remedies?  I would highly appreciate it!  The file size is too big to share here so I have a link to download it below:
