Ahhhh..ok here you go......Gull Wing one too if you want to look at it.

    Shanes- Gullwing Super8 Motel Roof.plan

Shanes- Dbl. Gable Super8 Motel Roof.plan

for this Dbl.Gable one here is my steps:

    1. Made 30' square building
    2. Set Room Ceiling Height
    3. Set all 4 walls to Gable
    4. Roof Build DBX > set Auto Build, 10:12 Pitch AND 7'ft Overhangs
    5. Use Transform Replicate to raise the 2 Roof planes of the East-West Ridge 2ft ( move> Z-Delta +24" )
    6. Joined Roof Planes back together
    7. Used Polyline Union to join the 2 separate parts of the East-West Roofs back into one plane ( delete original )

    Hopefully I didn't miss a Step....

    Thank you so much!

It appears what I thought was a slight angle Change and Hence the "Gullwing thought" is likely just the way the Gable Fascia Rake Concrete Tiles looks in some Views , pity they lost the "Roof Spire" in 2004....

I'd post the Plan of this one except you can't open it as I now see you are on X8 still....

Thank you for sharing.  I have X12, just couldn't figure out where to update the signature, but finally found it.  I'd really appreciate seeing the file.  Thank you.

I thought it maybe a Gull Wing type of roof but as Eric and CS pointed out it likely isn't ......check the Reference Manual for how to build the basic types in CA , there are Tutorial in the KB too.

*** PS I call it a Gullwing - one word - Chief calls it a Gull Wing Roof , when searching the Manual or Website.

You may well both be right , looks Like Shane was here this morning and didn't clarify though ...I assumed it was the Gullwing that was throwing him how to do in Chief.....

Hello.  Thanks for the replies.  I took the pictures from Streetview but have been to the location before in person.  I'm a little confused as to what the question is about in terms of valley's and pitch.  Sorry, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to roofs on CA.  Here is an interactive link in street view where you can move around to see the roof, if that helps. https://www.google.com/maps/@29.9199584,-81.4149445,3a,41.1y,195.67h,91.76t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sKrg_vObEZcSFVZLXjfu-nA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

  5. Hello,

I have the student version of X11, with the most recent update, on my Macbook Pro (macOS Mojave 10.14.6).  When I download and attempt to open the Samples Gallery file "Bachelor View", I get the following error message "You are running an older version of Chief Architect Premier Software that does not support the newer features of the .layout file you are attempting to open. There is a newer version of Chief Architect Premier available. Would you like to upgrade now?"

The file will not open, with the error message appearing when I attempt to open the file.  I deleted and redownloaded the file with the same error appearing.  Other sample files open without issue.  Any advice?  Thank you!

    From Help:

    OBJ Files

Material definitions for most .obj files are saved in a separate file with the .mtl file extension. If such a file exists, the materials associated with the .obj file display in the list on the left side of the Materials panel of its specification dialog.

If Chief Architect does not receive material definition information in an accompanying .mtl file, default material properties are assigned.

Material definitions for .obj files can also include texture information in the form of image files (.jpg, .png, etc).

In order to properly import an .obj file, Chief Architect needs the .obj file, the .mtl file, and any referenced texture files. If a texture file is not available, the material it is associated with is created without a texture.

The material definitions associated with an imported .obj symbol are not available for use by other objects in Chief Architect until that symbol has been placed into a plan. The associated texture files are then copied to the user’s Textures folder. See Chief Architect Data.

Thank you.  Where do I find the textures folder?  Thanks again.

  7. I recently purchased a custom model from a model designer.  They sent me the .OBJ file along with an .MTL file.  I was told the .MTL file is the materials for the .OBJ file.  I was told the materials for the .OBJ will load in the libarary and I can then apply them to the model in any program I use, such as Chief Architect.  So far, I can open and view the actual. OBJ model, but it has no materials.  Can anyone point me in the direction on how to fix this or if it can even work in Chief Architect?

    Thank you!

  8. Hello,

Does anyone know where I can find sample site plans or floor plans of truck stops?  I'm working on a personal project and trying to get a better idea of overall dimensions, layout, etc.

Any idea of where I can also find floor plans of commercial buildings in general?

    Thank you for your help!

Yes you can create a thin yurt wall that is 1/2" or 5/8" with two layers and this will allow you to install windows and doors.  The stock lattice that I used to demonstrate would not look great but you could make custom material to more realistically represent the yurt structure.

    Thank you!

  10. Thank you everyone for the advice!  I recognize that there is better software than chief for commercial projects.  I love Chief due to its easy learning curve.  I have tried Revit and hated it due to the complexities of creating things.  I am not an architect by training and have used the software for a project I hope to take to an architect in the future.

    Thank you again!

Ok I got your plan loaded and it is HUGE and running fairly slow on my machine.  You can likely speed things up quite a bit by turning things off that you are not using at the time.  Anything like symbols of furnishings and such can have their layers turned off as soon as you have them situated.  I don't have time right now to comb over the whole plan but it seems similar to the last one I looked at with the same issues.  My Task manager readings are static at about 24% for memory and 15 -25 % for CPU. I will get back to you after dinner. Anything with a high surface count you should try to turn off.  My GPU load is about 27% in Perspective Full Overview and 1-2% in plan view.

    Thank you for your advice!

Here are my comments for whatever they're worth...

    1.   I tried your plan out on my desktop.  Very slow for me as well.  Working in plan view not bad (only a few seconds lag time for undo/redo operations) but working in 3D it was taking between a minute and a minute and a half for the same operations.
    2.   I don't see any reason why your storage space would come into play at all.  That should never have any affect on your speed.
    3. The SSD should make a difference...not because of the increased storage but because of the technology...data access is just much faster with an SSD.
    4.   I suspect the reason for the slowness may have more to do with your video card than anything else you've mentioned.  Part of the slowness on my end might be my RAM although I doubt it (I was getting low memory warnings with your plan open) but you seem to have plenty of that.
    5. I don't think the CPU usage displaying as zero is a big deal.  Mine looks like that all the time when Chief is sitting idle.  It will jump up when you're actually doing something but usually when you're looking at the task manager you've stopped doing anything.  Trying moving your mouse around the screen on Chief wile task manager is visible or try zooming in and out on a 3D view and see what that number does.

At the end of the day, I'm betting it's either:

    A.  Your CPU and maybe one of it's settings (the plan is just huge)

    B.  Your video card.

What are your video card specs?  Remember that the video card does most of the heavy lifting when it comes to normal 3D views.

Thank you for the advice.  Here is the video card info, I think. I also use the program Lumion which is much faster but their software engineers have also recommended upgrading to the Titan X graphics card.

And is that live while Chief is non responsive?      Because if it is there is a major problem with 0% CPU usage.

Chief is running during that.  It always runs in the sense that it isn't crashing.  Just extremely slow.  It freezes while saving, making any change to items in the plan, moving walls, etc but never crashes, just takes forever.

Usually X9 officially releases around Feb.(never know for sure) but the final public Beta will be real soon, if you have X8, and SSA and beware, you can't go back once a plan is brought forward into X9 so copy the plan or layout

    Thanks for the advice!

While you are watching that little blue circle go around and around pull up Windows 10 Task manager or Resource Monitor and it will give you a real time readout of your CPU and Memory utilization.  I suspect that this will not be running at 100%.  If you run a high quality ray trace that will give you a good comparison for performance vs. the plan file.

Here it is.  I am a little confused by what Raytrace is.  Thanks again.

I would not mind taking a look at your plan file if you can upload it to a cloud service and post the link or try to put it in a zip file and see if it is 25 MB or less to post directly on the forum.   I looked at a plan file for a friend in a similar situation and it choked my computer down to a slow speed but was only using about 20-25% of my computers resources.  I have talked to tech support about this situation and they are looking for plan files that cause problems like this.  Your processor may be holding you back a little but there should not be any issue with your RAM or SSD.

Here is the file.  Thank you so much!  https://www.dropbox.com/s/mtekzio3km0yeu9/Lodge.zip?dl=0
