When this happens I try using "Open System Print Dialogue" at the bottom left of the Print Dialogue box.

Then I chose "save as pdf" (on a Mac, but there should be a similar option on a PC?)

This uses the system print to pdf feature instead of Chief's pdf printer.

That option is greyed out on my dialog box.

    Hi All,

We are experience a fairly frustrating situation, and after exhausting the avenues I know of, I'm coming here for help.

    - We have a 34 page layout file, consisting of floor plans, elevations, 3D perspectives, and schedules.

    - All elevation and 3D cameras are set to update on demand

    - File has printed perfectly fine in the past, up until adding in the schedules.

When we go to print, the print dialogue box opens. Upon trying to load all of the pages for preview, it gets to page 30 and crashes. We can't stop the "automatic preview" button because if we hit cancel, it also crashes. We can't choose any other printer option because again, it can't get past the loading of all of the pages.

I've purged the files, did a windows update, and tried printing on the other computers in our office. We're running robust new systems with 3090 cards, drivers up to date.

Any insights here that could be helpful? We have a looming deadline and I'd really like to be able to get this thing off the printer!

It won't let me attach the layout file here, says the size is too large.

    Also, we are running x13

    Thanks in advance.

Are you still having this issue or was it ever resolved? I'm experiencing the same thing with every semi-large layout file - ready to rip my hair out.

Tried both suggestions above to no avail.

  3. Hi,

I'm not sure if I've changed some type of setting or what's happened but now when I enter the Global Macro %date.long%, the day of the week is included when it never was before. I'd prefer the day of the week not to show...

Screenshot from a PDF I just created last week:

    image.png.79709fd0afddb9b5eb9f8a66c5692807.png

Now the date shows up like this:

    Any idea what's happened here?

    Thank you!!

It shows as $2200 for me at BB , which makes the One I linked above at CC on Sale a better Deal......... for $2200 you can even get the 32GB Ram and still be under $2200

    M.

I think he was looking at the Open Box one for $1899.99.

From what I can tell, the only difference in specs from the Best Buy one he recommended and the CC one you did would be the processor? AMD vs i7?

Can you upgrade RAM later on these? How can you tell from the specs? I think I'd likely take it as is for now with 16GB RAM and then upgrade later if it's a possibility.

Very confused that there isnt a clear designation of US vs canadian, sorry..Ill shut up now, haha

Sorry my mistake lol. The price I saw was in CAD but once I added the video card, RAM, OS, etc it came out to over $3000 CAD.

The newest one suggested by the IT guy is around $2000 CAD.

  6. I think these would be viable options and ones I'd be comfortable suggesting based on price point:

    1) https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_4419&item_id=234878 (original, $1699)

    2) https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_4419&item_id=187823 (better video card but 16GB RAM? $1749)

    3) https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_4419&item_id=243885 (same video card but 32GB RAM? $1889)

    4) https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_4419&item_id=239806 (same video card but 32GB RAM - $1499 - why is this one so much cheaper? lol)

Will all of the above allow me to do RTRT?

Thanks to all of you for your help!!

I will say you will not get RTRT with this laptop

I won't get RTRT with the one in my signature or with the laptop I linked above?

Has your Boss given your a budget Number $$$ wise for the Purchase?

He has not, and tbh I didn't think I wasn't going to be given the opportunity for input on the purchase - I thought the IT guy was just going to go ahead once he got the OK. So, since this one is priced at $1700 I'm inclined to stick very close to that $ if I were to suggest something else. Don't want to push my luck here lol.

So a 3080 is better than a 4060 but the 4070 is better than the 3080?

if an Intel CPU is preferred

Is an Intel CPU better or just preference? What are the other options?

  8. Ha, actually my signature is correct. When I was working solo, I had a gaming laptop and had no rendering issues outside of the laptop being slow when working on larger files. I recently started working under a general contractor who provided me the laptop with the specs in my signature. Its giving a very consistent error and crashing every time I go into a Physically Based Camera mode and sometimes in Standard. I've been working with their IT guy for several weeks. He's updated all drivers and done many a number of other setting related changes to no avail. You can see the error message I'm referring to if you go to my past posts here.

Today, the IT guy suggested the GC purchase the laptop linked above to solve the issues as the video card built into this one seems to not be compatible with CA. GC ok'd this but the IT guy is asking my opinion and if it will suit my needs. I think asking for a 4090 video card would be presumptuous and excessive and I don't want to offend as its not coming out of my pocket.

i.e. Is this sufficient for now? Can it run 1-2 external monitors? Can the video card and/or RAM be upgraded/swapped at a later date if ever required? I realize these may be questions for him but I follow you renerabbit and value your opinion!

    Thanks! :)

It looks like a very good spec.

As for the graphics card... the 4090 is superior to the 4060 by a a huge margin but the question remains... will you need the extra power regardless of the cost? do you do a lot of real time rendering?

Personally I would stick with the 4060 but increase the RAM to 32GB.

Also check to see what ports are available on the 4060 for additional external monitors

    Elgreco

I work mostly in vector or line drawing camera modes. My current laptop is crashing anytime I switch to physically based camera mode. I typically export images in this mode for client presentations but that's about it.

Can RAM be upgraded later on a laptop? I know they can be different from a desktop in this regard.

How do I check re: ports? I only use 1 external monitor and only when I'm in the office.

Thank you for your input, much appreciated!

I would suggest paying more for an upgraded video card to at least RTX 4090

    DJP

Just looked this one up and definitely out of budget at the moment. Are you suggesting this bc the specs on the laptop that I linked are insufficient for CA?

  11. Hi,

I've been having issues with my current laptop, IT guy says it's a compatibility issue between the laptop's built in video card and CA.

This is the new laptop he's suggesting:

    https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=710_4419&item_id=234878

I'd really appreciate some input and opinions as I'm not very knowledgeable on computer specs and comparing these specs to the recommended CA specs is still gibberish to me lol.

    Thanks!!

  12. Has anyone experienced this error before or have a fix? I'm getting it multiple times per hour, nearly every time I'm in PB camera mode. Once I press OK, the program crashes. Extremely frustrating, time consuming. Losing work if auto save wasn't recent, etc etc.

This has only started happening since I switched to a new laptop approx 1 month ago. Also using an external monitor for the first time. This file was started on my last laptop.
^Not sure if any of the above factors into what I'm experiencing but worth mentioning.

Just curious why you need to dimension these end panels.

First off I'm with solver on this, I see no need to dimension to those

Cabinet maker and contractor requirement. They also use 5/8" gables on either side of a range/appliance so I find it helpful to have them dimensioned when planning out the space. I also like to be able to see them on my floorplan view which you can't when adding them through the cabinet dialog box (unless I'm mistaken here?)

Can you show some examples of a finished cabinet that you wish to model?

Attaching the plan I was working on when I aired my frustrations (lol). Client wanted framed end panels on every end which wasn't an easy change given I had used partitions. I just wish there were an easier/more seamless way, I guess. There are drawbacks no matter which way I do it.

When I create them out of partitions:

    - can only be slab but are dimensioned easier

    - crown does not extend over them so I'm having to do that separately

    - can see on floorplan

When I add them through the dialog box:

    - can be slab or framed but have to dimension each one manually with point markers

    - can't be larger than the cabinet you're applying it to (i.e. for the end of an island that is 2 cabinets deep/back to back)

    - can't see on floorplan for space planning (this is the biggest problem for me and why I always just go back to just using partitions)

Basically, any library door style can be placed in a plan as free-standing object.  Just place, resize, and then position it where you want.

Based on all of the helpful comments here though I think I'll just change to making them out of a cabinet or using a free-standing cabinet door.

  14. Cabinet maker uses applied gables/end panels. I know that I can add these through the cabinet dialog box. When I do it this way, they aren't picked up when doing dimension lines so I'm having to add multiple point markers and do every one manually. Also, if I have an appliance on the end of a cabinet run (DW, bar fridge, etc), I'd be unable to add a gable/panel this way anyways. Also doesn't work well on the end of an island where you have cabinets on front and back with different depths.

So, I typically just resize a partition to make these end gables. The problem, however, is that I can't add a cabinet profile to these. Is there something in the library I'm missing or an easier way to do this without a thousand work arounds?

I also struggle with angled walls and after many years of working on plans for very old homes with crazy angled walls in the Boston area, I found the best way to have complete control over the dimensions at the angles was to use point markers at the end of each angle.  I'd then slowly adjust each wall to be as close as possible to my point markers.  Might not be the "proper" way to do things, but it gave me control.

Okay this definitely got the job done! Thanks so much!

I do still wonder what the proper way to do it is though lol I gave myself a headache trying to figure it out

Try drawing a CAD line where you want the main layer of the wall to go. Your wall will snap to it. Start drawing in the middle, then extend to the sides.

And probably add the angle to the Allowed Angles.

So draw a CAD line from point to point and then draw a wall next to the CAD line? Wall doesn't seem to be snapping to the CAD line and the other dimensions are still changing...

  17. I have my floorplan down but need to add an angled wall between the two points seen below. The measurements shown there are what I need them to be, however, any time I try to connect those two points everything is thrown off. Wall lengths change.

I've tried so many different ways of doing this but nothing seems to be working for me (drawing all walls and then adjusting as needed, locking the start/end/center of the walls, etc). I know I must be doing something wrong or backwards here but can't figure it out.

  18. Typically I can see dashed lines between each cabinet on my floorplan. On this plan, I cannot. I must have changed a default or layer setting somewhere but I can't see where or how to change it back.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but all of the cabinets were framed/inset at one point but I've since changed them to frameless/full overlay.
