  1. What the heck is this?  It shows up under some footings sometimes, but not all.  And sometimes it goes away and comes back inexplicably.  I can't select it and can't for the life of me figure out how to get rid of it.  It's not ruining anything major, just my happiness and sanity. Let me know if anyone has some insight. Plan here

Didn't look at the file, but were your edits to the envelope or to the chords?

    I edited the chords/web members.

One thing I figured out is if I create a truss, lock the web, multiple copy, then edit the truss, only one truss with that label changes (not even the first one weirdly).  if I then check "Force truss rebuild" on all the trusses with the same label, my edits are reverted back to the default, BUT if I hit undo, all the trusses with the same label change to what I had edited.  So I'm pretty sure this is a bug, but at least there is a workaround, albeit very specific and clunky.

Export to TwinMotion. You don’t need your lighting.
Walkthroughs are so much simpler and straight forward on TM.

Michael I gave an upvote simply to counteract the downvote.  I guess you were downvoted by a fervent CA apologist?  I have looked into TW and although I really appreciate the one-time-purchase, I don't think I can justify it with how rarely I do walkthroughs.  I have played around a bit with the free version though and it seems like a great program.

  4. Is there a way to automatically generate bookshelf girts spaced 2' O.C. between posts in a post framed wall in Chief?  (Idk if there's a different term for them, but around here we call flat girts btwn posts "bookshelf girts," and it is the typical way to frame a post frame building.)  Currently the closest I can get is to check the Exterior box under Build Framing dbx>Wall>Blocking.  This only generates one blocking run.  I was wondering if I'm just missing a way to do something similar but have multiple runs auto generate and I could specify the spacing?  From what I can tell, it seems Chief only knows about flat girts on the outside of the posts.

  5. I am trying to export a pretty large walkthrough from a pretty large model (a small church).  I cannot export more than about 10-20 frames at a time without my computer suddenly committing a thermal shutdown.  CPU temp monitoring shows core temps can reach up to 85 celsius.  Is this too demanding for my hardware (see CPU in signature), or am I doing something wrong with the software (using standard mode rendering with about 70 light fixtures)?  It seems to me that if it can export 20 frames at a time, it should be able to handle any number of frames, but I'm no software expert.  Does anybody have any thoughts on this issue?  Workarounds?  Devastating criticism?  Anything is helpful, I'm at a complete loss.  This is really putting a damper on my efficiency.

Plan file is too large to upload, unfortunately.

  6. So I figured this out myself for lack of outside help.  It had something to do with the fact that I use OneDrive to back up my Chief Data folders, and when the shutdown occured, my User Catalog and Trash folder got corrupted somehow.  I uninstalled Chief, then I moved my User Catalog and Trash folder out of their home.  Then I reinstalled Chief; the Trash folder was healed and I reimported my User Catalog, though I lost some of my custom content.  I'm not totally sure why this worked, but it did, in case anyone has the same problem.

  7. I was working on a project when my PC went down suddenly without warning. When I returned and opened my project back up, Chief prompted me to open an autosaved file which I did. Chief then gave me an error message (screenshot attached). I clicked OK, but when I went to my library browser, nothing was there. No dropdown arrows, no search results returned, nothing. All my library data are still stored in the same place, it's like Chief doesn't know how to find them.

    • I tried repairing the program and rebooting, no dice.
    • I tried updating the core catalogs.  It seemed to work, but when I closed that session and opened a new one, I went back to square one with the error message and empty library folders.
    • I tried importing my user catalog, and it did show up, but everything in it was duplicated, and it wouldn't let me delete the duplicates.  And it was gone when I opened a new session.
    • I tried importing a random manufacturer catalog, and it seemed to work as well, but didn't stick around in a new session.

Hopefully I'm missing something simple; does anybody know how I can recover my library content?

  8. Where would be the best place/person to go to for in-depth training on understanding and best utilizing chief's material lists for organized, accurate takeoffs?  I have looked around a lot on these forums, in the help documentation, and the videos, and I am still getting frustrated with this aspect of chief.  One big reason our company invested in chief is because we believed it would drastically speed up the material takeoff process, but as it stands now I am having my doubts about that.  I am hoping it is simply my own density that is preventing me from understanding how to get my material lists into acceptable shape, so I am eager to learn how experts go about using them.

Hopefully this is the right forum for this question.  I appreciate any and all help!

  9. Hello CA community!

I am a new Chief Architect user and so far am really impressed with the capabilities this program has.  Right now I am trying to learn how to use the material list function.  I'm kind of struggling to find an efficient and simple workflow to get accurate calculations in a simple format translated from CA's native spreadsheet environment into Excel.  I've searched for tutorial videos and other documentation on the subject, but it seems that such is rather sparse and what is there seems kinda lacking in thoroughness.  I was just wondering first of all: how much do you all actually use/rely on CA's material lists?  And secondly, what kind of workflow y'all use to create usable takeoff spreadsheets from the raw data?  Any other tips and tricks that a beginner should know?

    Thanks!

  10. I realize this thread is pretty old, but was anybody able to find a solution/workaround to this issue?  I'm having this same problem.  It seems to me that Chief should be able to do this since in the real world footings usually extend past bearing walls.
