That window will be below the living room with 24" floor trusses on top of it, bearing a roof made of trusses with no snow load.

Widest opening is 9' supporting a floor above.

Or actually are your framers even using a triple 2x for a header?
-
So some of you know from my last thread that I was contemplating on the height of my doors and windows with a 9' ceiling. Well I have decided to go with a 6'8 door and transom that will take me to 8'. I will also put my windows at 8'. Question is how are you guys framing for your header? I have 2x6 exterior walls, so are you using 2x10 or 2x10 with stud on the bottom. Just a 2x10 will put the bottom of the header at 96 7/8 and if I put a stud on the bottom that will drop me to 95 3/8. My doors say 95 5/8 rough with an actual height of 95 1/8. I have some 8' and 9' openings that I will have to span and I would think that a triple 2x10 (since I have 2x6 walls) will span 9'. What are you guys thoughts? Just leave the stud out and run the 2x10 and have the extra wiggle room? Do you think this is to much room though? Thanks Shaun

Thank you everyone for all the emails. I have a couple of people that I am talking with and believe I have it taken care of.

I might be in desperate need of a CA user to help with the design of a lake front property located at Norris Lake in TN. I will not be looking for you to design interior finishes. It will be a very simple design and all I will be needing you to design is basically the floor plan and roof. For more info please contact me though PM or directly at alcopropertiesllc@gmail.com Thanks Shaun

Thanks Joey and Sherry, my meeting is in an hour so I will see what is available.
-
Thanks guys for all the feedback. 8' doors is what we will be going with!
-
Here is a 6'8" with 12" transom and then an 8' door. Which do you guys like better?
-
Thanks Sherry!! I am going to run all the numbers to see what the difference is going to be!! My wife said she thinks she like the look of the transom over top the slider and then just do tall windows. So we might go ahead and just do 6'8" slider with 16' transom and put them at 8'? If this is even available through my supplier. I will know on Monday. Or just do the 12" transom and keep them at 7'8" or heck just do 8' who knows!! lol
-
Ken thanks for the feedback. I have a meeting on Monday with my supplier and will be checking the price for both ways, 8' doors or 6'8" door with 12" transom. Then I could hang everything at 7'8" and for sure not have a soffit problem.

Perry what is that height for egress? I did all my windows at 36x60 which puts my floor to bottom at 36. My windows in the front are 36x48 but those are just to the laundry, half bath, living room and master bath.

]So I believe I am going to do all windows and doors at 8' in the rear and side. All my windows in front I am going to do at 7'8" b/c I have a 3/0 exterior door into my laundry room with a window in it. I don't think a 3/0x8/0 door would look good here. Does this look odd at all? And then in the back I did 8/0x8/0 sliders. Good idea or something different?? Thanks for all the feedback. It has really helped!

Will I run into a problem with my soffit running into my windows if I go to 8'? Also what about a single 3/0 exterior door that goes into a laundry room? Would you do this 8' also? This room will have a window in it also.

I was looking at other builder pics around the area that I am building this house in and by some of the pics it looks like people are putting in 8' sliders and hanging there windows at 7'8". What do you guys think of this look? this is pretty much the same design house I am doing.
