Thank you for all the answers! I found a solution in the end - invisible walls didn't do the trick, but diving the exterior wall along the line of the connecting interior wall did it. Now HD loves to automatically rebuild those walls if I change anything later (for example change the material of the walls for a different look), but I generally can recover from it with the same method. I would love an option to completely disable automatic wall rebuilds - it feels like it's more in my way than helping me.

Hello all, I am trying to recreate a real house in Home Designer Pro. The existing project has a complex outer wall design, where most of the wall is 30cm thick brickwork (with plaster on both sides), but there are 2 alcoves on each side of the building which are much thinner (~10cm) and built out of wood. I can model them fine for the most part with different wall types, but I run into problems when there's a corner of the thicker wall that only has 10cm of the ticker wall in use. As soon as I connect the interior wall to the exterior one, HD forces my thick exterior wall to be shorter, and expands the thin one. How do I prevent this from happening?
