  1. Okay, if you had no more than 2 grand to spend (maybe 2500) and you were in need of a new laptop, what would you pick? Now, to make it a bit more interesting, imagine you don't just work in Chief. I do design in Chief and HDP. Also Video editing on Adobe, other design work on Adobe products and branching out into other software. I really need 4K UHD for video editing. And I really need a 17" screen, as my eyes are not as young as they once were. Keep in mind, I will have no more desktop use, as I will be traveling. And with that in mind, maybe should go with a 15" and more powerful reading glasses. It will be difficult to get used to though, as I am used to 27" dual screens. Not too concerned about rendering as I rarely do that. I have noticed there are pros and cons between mobile workstations and gaming laptops. Anyway, after weeks of reading reviews, articles, and videos, I need to take a breath of air. So far I am leaning toward an 8th gen i7. But the question is, if YOU were to buy one today (and needed to do what i do) what would it be? I appreciate your suggestions.
  2. I will do that now. Thank you for the reminder.
  3. Yes, and I thought I did. I appear to have just aligned the wall below. I am having a problem with defining the attic wall by itself, rather than the wall below. When I turn off everything in display options except Attic walls, nothing shows up. Not sure what I am screwing up.
  4. I am attempting to place a gable vent in the center of the wall. No matter what I have tried, it will not work. There is an invisible post/piece of wall? that i cannot find any way to remove in HD Pro 18, as it will not highlight. I currently do not have an active license for X9. I need someone to see if you can repair this issue in X9, as it appears that will be the only way to accomplish it, and be able for me to open it in HDP 2018. Any help will be greatly appreciated. 5. I have a file I am working on the has an entry in the center. I have it mostly finished but cannot get the roof return correct. Also the Garage is -12" from the floor grade with mono slab. Every time i move it, it screws up something. Anyone have time to play with it? or can explain what I did wrong? The middle attic wall is floating, and would not generate a return, so I pulled it from one side. This one is being designed between HD pro 18 and X9 Carson_draft_zip.zip
  6. Okay, I think you have me convinced to stay with Intel. Especially after looking at the benchmarks. It is matching some processors that are four times the price. Only one problem: Tracking down an I7 8700K is like trying to find the elusive Jackalope. They may indeed exist, but thanks to underproduction, they are nowhere to be found. Motherboards to match, are almost as troublesome. Especially if i am aiming for one that supports m.2 drives and quad channel ram.
  7. Great info and i appreciate all the replies. I know I need an upgrade on my processor, it just cannot keep up with all I am putting it through. I really cannot afford a grand for a processor. And looking at the benchmarks, for 300 bucks, both the Ryzen 7 1700 and evidently, the Intel i7 8700 K both are screaming fast compared to my i5. So now i am back to my original problem..AMD versus Intel. And i swear, everyone is an expert and it is like talking to people about politics. Frustrated...
  8. I am upgrading and building a new PC ( tired for waiting on raytrace and rendering) So, after way too much research, and speaking to far too many gamers, a few video editors, designers and a couple techs at Chief, I am opting for a Ryzen 7 1700. After overclocking, the advantage of the 1700x or 1800 only add about 6% improvement, money better spent on RAM. But, truth be told, the only ones who seem to know very much about matching motherboards are gamers, and they have much different needs. And as the Ryzen is still relatively new, the bugs are just getting worked out. So, for those of you who are more of the multitasking designers, what should I look for? Any suggestions? FYI...I have opted for a Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB , so midrange.
  9. Thank you so much for your help! You're a lifesaver! I have a meeting with the client tomorrow, and this was a great help. I have another big job soon if you would like some extra work, I may be looking to hire someone for part of the plan. Tim
  10. And thus you have recreated my problem! That is exactly what happened to me! Thus why I am on here. Do you know how to fix it?
  11. Yes on the living room. And the hall and entry on the right for the other. And yes on the Roof Baseline Polyline. That is the one that I made green.
  12. My other issue was manipulating the poly roof lines manually, and getting the roof to transform correctly. past the wall.
  13. I have the ceilings turned off, the walls set the gable. I followed the videos but i am missing something. Do I just disregard the roof as is and complete everything else inside?
  14. I had managed to accomplish the same thing you did. My issue is that those gables and roof lines need to continue into their perspective rooms. The larger one into the far wall through the living room. creating a cathedral ceiling. And the smaller one, a cathedral into the entry, past the entry/hall wall into the hall, and then stopping at the kitchen.
  15. I have run into an issue that I am frustrated with. I have many years of experience with Home designer, but recently upgraded. Never had a need for advanced roof design, but am just learning that now. I am learning to build roofs with polylines, At any rate...I have converted and made changes to an existing plan that has yet to be built. The front entry and living room, specifically. The issue I am having is this: I need the Living room to have a cathedral ceiling/ gabled roof with the roof extended out to meet the porch that wraps around the house, as shown in the elevation rendering from the original plan. Likewise, I have added an entry that needs to be a smaller carbon copy of that. As shown in the rough drawing. The cathedral ceiling/ gabled roof that extends from the deck edge into the hall, where the kitchen starts. The kitchen and dining room in the plan have flat ceilings. I have tried a number of things to accomplish that for the last day, but something on the roof always goes wrong. There clearly needs to be a sloping valley between the two gabled roofs, as well, and I have no idea how to accomplish that. I would greatly appreciate anyone that can either fix the plan, or explain what I am missing. 20 videos and many hours of reading and i am still stuck. Thank you kindly in advance, Tim Scala_Working_Model.plan
