As a corolary. I changed the pixel size in preferences, which allows me to see the wuadrant angles. I still have to zom way down to see the length. When I do, both appear the same size. I have fooled with the various scale setting in CAD etc but no luck here either. If I print a .pdf, the metes and bounds are both unreadable.

Yes, tried all the obvious things. Scaling, defaults for cad & dim’s, layer line styles etc The PL’s were input, which is about the only way to do it I think. Have had issues with the size of the text on PL’s in the past, and frankly this time also. Never had them disapear when sent to layout. Tried new files, plan and layout, with the same result dont do much work anymore, so I font keep up/remember much of the arcane I once knew

I have created a plot plan, which displays metes and bounds; however, when I send to layout, the metes and bounds disappear. I have looked at all display options etc. The only way send and have them show, is to send as an image, which is then not to scale.

You were absolutely correct. I made those changes and then moved roof planes and attic walls in order to make gable friezes be correct as well as aligning gable wall with lower brick veneer. All that is left is the transition I mentioned which I can resolve easily. In doing all of this I found that manipulating the walls and/or roof planes, several times made the continuous eaves reappear. Not sure what that is, but at least I know where to start looking for such things. I have used Chief a long time, since v.4 I think, but have found that the 3d elevations and roofs were more trouble than I wanted, unless everything was very simple. CA has come a long way in what can be represented in those views and I have started trying to adapt. But, I'm old, crotchety, curmudgeonly and hand drafted for many, many, many years...a bad combination for assimilating technology, I'm afraid. Thank you immensely for your prompt reply and your help.

I have not looked back at the plan, but I thought I had made all of those wall dialogues to not have returns. Which wall did you remove? The one projecting out and stopping the continuous eve? I had deleted that wall, which is basically the second floor wall at the lower eave, but it had no effect?? What you show is what is existing with the exception of some type of trim between the siding and the brick veneer. I know I will have to do that with other tools. I apologize for not understanding what you did, but would appreciate a fuller explanation as this sort of thing, at lease similar in nature, has often created issues for me. Thanks

I was just guessing also. Last time I posted, I was admonished for not including the plan file. Since this issue would require multiple images, and I assume, some access to the settings, to resolve, I thought I should send the file. But, I apologize for not sending images.

Doing an as-built. I created the basic roof using auto-roof and then edited it manually to raise one section higher. This created a gable over a lower roof. I cannot get either that gable wall or the eaves to cooperate. I am attaching the file. You will note that the gable in question is showing a boxed eave on the front. This is what was selected in all the dialogues; however, the other eave of that same gable is showing a continuous return. In all of that, the abutting roof 2nd floor lower wall, is in the picture for some reason and interfering with the generation of the gable wall and is apparently the end point for the continuous eave return. Interestingly, you will note there is a small bump out on the rear of the building with no roof. If I generate a manual shed roof over this section, the single boxed eave changes to a continuous return eave. I usually build roofs manually, but things like this usually cause problems. Thought I would try, as is always suggested, to start with an automatic roof and manually adjust it hoping to eliminate joining issues that are often hard to find with manual roofs. Actually it does. The fix was to eliminate the three layers I had in roof structure, to one. I did that at all settings. That made the ridiculous soffits appear correctly; however it did not solve all the frieze issues. By eliminating those two layers of roof structure, I changed the roof structure to be 1.25" less, but, that, to me, does not reasonably explain why the program, prior to that change, had generated soffits that were 12" lower than after the adjustment????? There are two different ceiling hts. and one lower eave ht. If you let the program autobuild roofs in that configuration you just get a mess. Unless all eaves and ceilings are level, it is not always a good start to use auto build you are right about the 2nd floor. I really need that to have a second floor plan. I would agree that the more accurate the model the more accurate the 3d; however that does not account for "fixes" that are not straight forward and included in any CA reference material, needing to also be in place. One of the reference videos indicated that that subfascia;s for rake and eave needed to be the same. That is asinine in terms of real world building, but I found it part of the fix. I had also made the fascia the same in attempting to resolve my original issue. Actually, the frieze generated, where it decided to generate at all, correctly with those settings. The shadow board moldings were the only thing that DID generate correctly and in all places and from the very beginning. If everything else had worked that well I would not have had a problem. None of this addresses the issues I still have. Thank you, but once again, even with a relatively simple design, it does not take much variation to make CA 3d problematic.....Unless you have the secrets to all the fixes. I have no question that there are many CA users that would have little or no problem with this. I see wonderful examples. I know how to build and how to design and have over 60 years of experience at both, but I just may be too stupid to use all the CA functions properly.

I apologize for being so late in replying. Chop....your fix worked....almost. I still have a couple of issues. I have an artifact gutter at the ceiling of the 2nd floor, on the right gable where the exterior wall extends over the lower roof. I also have no frieze on the eave over the garage doors. On this latter, I am guessing it is because I extended the eave of that roof plane down in one area. I am attaching the revised plan. I want to offer my sincere thanks to everyone that responded and particularly to Chop for taking the time and effort to produce a video to explain my problem. I still am unable to conceive how that particular fix resolved the problem, but it does. I would not live long enough to make such a correlation. As I had mentioned, I have never used the 3d aspect of CA to any real degree. It is too difficult to get all the detail I normally need for projects and winds up descending into a morass of "fixes" which never quite get what is needed. This particular project is very simple and therefore one I thought would be a good one for me to learn more about developing my CA 3d skills. I am mostly retired and am somewhat of an anachronism as I hand drafted most of my career...for the reasons stated above. I started with CA v4 and only used it to develop floorplans. CA has come a long way and is, IMO, unquestionably the best drafting program out there. The CAD tools, which I do much of my work with, are unparalleled in their ease of use. The interface, and editing abilities, uniquely is the best to actually "design" with, as most CAD programs virtually demand the design be done and then drawn in CAD, at least practically. Some versions ago I was finally able to produce the details I needed, fully in CA and I can only thank the efforts of the CA development team. I will continue to work on my 3d skills. As with this issue, most of my problems come from not fully setting up all parameters before beginning the design. Some are niggling like not have the right textures set (the air gap as opposed to framing) and others are still bewildering to me, like finding multiple places to set things and how setting affect things which have no obvious connection, at least to me. I appreciate the help, I truly do; however, you will have to excuse my obvious ignorance. I attempted to change my framing from 1/2". I could not find anything set at 1/2". I did make sure that my roof structure was set at 9 1/4" and the surface at 5/8", This in a perhaps misguided attempt to show rafter and roof thickness (I had included three layers in the previously sent file for surface, rafter and ceiling, which was likely wrong). I made sure all sub-fascia' s and fascia's were set to the same size. I rebuilt the roof planes with the following results: The frieze still does not generate in the gables or on some of the eaves, as before. The frieze under the roof return is now 3in higher than that on the eave as opposed to 2in lower as in the file sent. The gable soffits are 12in lower than the bottom of the fascia, as before The eave soffits do not exist on some eaves, also as before I am a long time use of Chief, but I have refrained from using 3d views. Despite any efforts I can make, there are always problems. Usually unwanted artifacts but also such instances as this. Still, I have slowly tried to become at least partially proficient, mainly because Chief has brought more capability to show detail as the versions have gone by. One of the problems I have with most software is that generally getting what you want, at some point, requires some arcane "fix". How the above settings or, as indicated a single setting like "your framing is set to 1/2"", can possibly generate or cause the above problems is beyond me. I am obviously frustrated here and I freely admit my own ignorance and inability is likely the root cause of my problems; however, in all the reference material, help features, training videos and, unfortunately, topics in this forum, I find nothing to guide me in this situation. Of course, this obviously means that I must be the only one having this problem. At any rate, I appreciate the consideration here. If upon review of the above anyone has a viable solution, I would welcome your input. If you rather avoid it, I can understand that too. So would I, but...............

I am attaching the plan file, as well as another snip. The snip more clearly shows the problems. I put the soffits, returns and frieze back in to highlight what I was saying. You will note the difference in elevation between the frieze at the eave and that at the eave. Also, despite being selected, the frieze does not show in the gable and the soffit is obviously low there. The adjacent roof shows not frieze even though it is selected in the wall and roof dialogs. The plan is only partially started. It, as I also indicated, is likely due to some framing setting (at least the soffit issue). I looked at some training videos that indicated, as I interpreted it, the subfacia of the eave and rake had to be the same size???? I don't understand the logic of that, but, if it is necessary, as with much software, the logic is moot. Guerra Preliminary 1.plan

I am having problems with roof soffits and roof returns: If I generate a soffit. it is too low (see snip) If I generate roof returns and use a frieze, the frieze is also too low and the gable end frieze does not member with the eave frieze, by a small amount. I have made an example which just shows the soffit issue in the gable. Note I turned off soffits for an adjacent gable but the brick veneer is still cut low as with the other gable. I eliminated friezes in the example to make a clearer example. I have had the issues with the frieze height in the past and only cured it by manually adding frieze trim in the gables and eaves. This example will not allow even that as the veneer, at best, is cut too low. I have checked the sub-fascia and roof thickness setting and do not see that there should be a problem, but I suspect it lies there somewhere. In this example I made roof layers of 9.25 and .625 for the roof and the sub-fascias are 5.5" Anyway all help is appreciated. I would like to generate all this, as intended, using the automatic returns but the alignment is the issue there, so any suggestions on that end are also appreciated.

The point being if my font worked with the last 10 versions of CA, why would that be the issue now unless, and only perhaps, it is an X9 issue, which I doubt. The CA pdf saver works fine so it is not really an issue, but one would think Adobe to be the motherlode

I have used Adobe .pdf to print plans. With X9, the text nad numbers are jumbled on the pdf. No issues if I use the Chief version to save as a pdf. Just curious. Probably something I have done wrong

I have managed to get the gable walls to close but am unable to edit the frieze to go over those areas. I unlocked the roof trim layer, but when I attempt to edit, the line edits but the frieze does not appear on the newly edited line except to the extent as before the edit. I also have no real clue as to how I closed the attic wall gap. I was attempting to manually edit the gable attic walls (there are two, one on each side of the shed projection). I was having no luck until one of the adjustments worked and I am not sure what it was. I am sure there is a better way to approach this situation. One other matter. This is a long wall with a gable in the middle, which does not extend to either end of the wall. The balance of the wall is eave wall in terms of roof. If that makes any particular difference. I can attempt to replicate the original issue and post a plan, if that will truly be a help. Gary

Probably no one is still monitoring this thread, but I thought I would add the results of my experimentation. If I continue the exterior wall straight through the bump out for the shed, the attic wall draws properly along with the freize etc. However if I break that wall at each side of the bump out, the attic wall will still draw correctly. But, if I then change that broken segment into a invisible wall, the attic wall and frieze split above it as with the initial problem. This appears to be the issue anytime the room below, in any plan, is extended out and has a floor, such as a manually drawn bay or shed. I am sure there is a solution for this, but as I indicated, I normally do not use automated elevations and therefore have little experience with such unexpected behaviors. I know many, if not most, chief users do use those features and doubtless know how to handle this situation. It is difficult to add unusual detail to automated elevations, in my past experience, and that is why I have avoided them; however, recent new features and improvements have made such possibilities more practical and I have seen some very good examples of such work....I just do not know enough about how some of it is accomplished and I have found not much in the way of instruction. So, please help an old guy get up to speed.

Thanks for these replies. I am not in the office at the moment and will check the plan tomorrow afternoon. I think there is a basic misunderstanding in the last reply. The problem is as foolows: 1. There is a cantilevered area on a gable, which requires its own shed roof. When a roof plane is manually built, the attic wall and frieze, above it dissappears. 2. I have tried to lower the roof plane at its upper reach where it contacts the waa. The thought being that it intersects too deeply into the wall; however, that makes no difference. If the plane is completely removed, then, as expected all the wall of the projection extend up to the rafters. 3. It occurs to me I may need to use a room divider to make the projection a separate room, even though it is just part of a room, in order to avoid this behavior. I have not tried that. It is a possible solution in keeping with some of the bizarre ans inobvious efforts that often have to be made tp get auto,ated CAD programs to generate properly. Such thing are never well documented. I usually avoid such things by avoiding all but the very basic auto,ated features, but in this instance I was trying to explore better how the program would handle such a situation if you have more advice on the strength of what I have presented here, it is ,ost welcome. Otherwise, I will try the separate room gambit tomorrow. As always thanks Gary

What is the best way to resolve the issue of lower shed or bay roofs, covering projections in gable walls, cutting the automatically generated gable attic wall? This, I am sure, has been asked before, but I cannot readily find such a thread. Thanks for your help
