rwdozier
I am a custom home builder seeking paid conceptual design assistance for the front entry of an existing one-story brick home. I have prepared an accurate as-built model in Chief Architect X11 that can be provided privately. The attached photographs show the existing front elevation and the low, visually compressed entry condition. The existing porch roof and beam are barely above the 80-inch double entry doors. The interior entry also has an approximately 5½-inch floor transition that the homeowners want eliminated because it presents a tripping hazard. As part of the remodel, the interior entry floor, entry doors, and adjoining exterior porch will be lowered approximately 5½ inches. The project already includes complete roof replacement and replacement of all soffit and fascia, making this the appropriate time to improve the entry. The homeowners prefer a simple, understated solution rather than a large or elaborate roof feature. The existing roof pitch is 4:12. I prefer a design that maintains 4:12 roof planes and avoids flat valleys or low-slope crickets. Approximately 3′-7″ of additional forward porch projection is also available within the front setback. I would like to see fresh ideas developed from the original as-built design. A sanitized floor plan, roof plan, elevations, dimensions, photographs, and the Chief Architect X11 .plan file can be provided privately. I do not need a revised .plan file returned. Conceptual roof-plan views, front elevations, perspectives, or sketches will be sufficient if they include enough key dimensions and roof relationships for me to reproduce the design in Chief Architect X11. If interested, please send me a private message to discuss availability, proposed deliverables, and fee.
para-CAD
Looks dark and hidden back there. I’m from the Pacific Northwest, and the look we would do is 12 or 15 feet high timber where the tall new entry timber roof sheds down onto the two side roofs and projects out to give you a covered porch entry. I don’t wanna model in X11, but I’ll definitely share my thoughts. The house could stay at 4:12, but a dramatic entry like that would look better if it was 10:12 or 12:12 framed as a cathedral sloped ceiling. T&G pine soffit. no charge for just sharing ideas Edited September 15 by para-CAD

Kevinleite
Hi Bob, I reviewed the photos, and I agree the entry is visually compressed - the existing porch beam and roof sit too close to the double doors and get lost between the two brick portions of the house. Lowering the entry floor, doors, and porch about 5½" should give us some room to improve the proportions. I’d study a few simple options that keep the existing 4:12 roof language, use some of the available 3'-7" forward projection, and avoid flat valleys or low-slope crickets. I’d keep it understated and consistent with the existing house rather than adding an oversized entry feature. I’m comfortable working from your Chief Architect X11 model. I can provide conceptual roof-plan views, front elevations/perspectives, and the key dimensions and roof relationships you’ll need to reproduce the selected concept in Chief. Send over the sanitized floor plan, roof plan, elevations, dimensions, photos, and X11 file. I can review everything and confirm the fee and turnaround. Thanks. HM_Solutions
Bob Dozier, The idea presented by para-CAD is a great place to start. As you are just looking for some help and not a full design. If you are willing to send me the files, I can draw up a few options in Chief 18, the oldest I have installed is 14, which wont help if you are on 11. Glad to help someone who is just looking for some ideas. No charge for the help, just pay it forward when you can. James
