Reference in X9

I've just changed employer, my old employer used x11, my new one is still using x9! I'm doing a remodel drawing for a client, so I have the "As-built" plan and now I want to put that as a reference layer as I remodel and add the new parts of the house and remove old partition walls etc. How can I do this in X9? Please tell me there is a way of doing this?

Export the as-built (CAD detail from view), then import and locate the as-built as a CAD block on a custom layer.
