i've seen several people able to record a session of CA to show examples and such. is there an app for this or is it something included in the program?

I use Camtasia...but there are a numbers of programs that can do it.

I use Snagit by TechSmith, they have a free version and a small paid version

The free version is called Jing, the next version up is called Snagit (which is what I personally use) and the next version up after that is called Camtasia.  All 3 are made by TechSmith.  Start with Jing and see if that's enough for you.  Otherwise I would highly recommend Snagit too.  Its a super handy app for not only screen recording but for a number of other screen capture functions, photo editing, gif creation, and more.  If you're just getting started, Camtasia is probably overkill.

good to know guys. my son does recording from online games and he can record while playing in the program itself then immediately upload to youtube.

Yup.  You can do that with pretty much all screen recorders.  Also, as a side note, a lot of video conferencing apps like TeamViewer, GoToMeeting, and Skype have built in screen recording capabilities that can be used for this purpose too.

Turns out that if you have Windows 10 you have

a screen recording tool included in the software.

When was the last time you scrolled all the way

to the bottom of the Start Menu? That's where it's

located disguised as the "XBox Game Bar". You

can also access it by holding down the "Windows"

key and then hitting the "G" key.

Don't know if it's robust enough to record Chief

sessions though. I did a quick test of a modeling

session in Chief and it worked fine for the action

in the window that was being recorded, but the

opening any new drop down menus or browsers

in the window did not show up on the recording.

But what the hey, it's there and it's free. Give it a

shot. Maybe it can be of use to you.
